    Gilas U-16 joins Fr. Martin Cup

    MANILA, Philippines -- A three-game bill will kick off the start of the 13th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament, which kicks off on Friday, July 17, at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College campus in Mendiola, Manila. ...

    Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said a total of 33 teams are seeing this time around with 15 confirmed entries in the senior division, and 18 registered in the junior side.

    This tournament is for varsity team which have players who are listed in their school’s developmental team.

    The competition is held annually during the ongoing first semester collegiate season, and has attracted member schools collegiate leagues that have ongoing tournaments during the first semester.

    Bunched in Group A of the senior division are San Beda-B, Ateneo de Manila, San Sebastian College, Arellano University, AMA, Gilas Pilipinas under-16, and University of Perpetual Help-Cavite.

    Bracketed in Group B are San Beda-A, University of Santo Tomas, Letran, University of Perpetual Help, Diliman College, Mary the Queen College-Pampanga and St. Michael-Cavite.

    In the junior side, San Beda is in Group A with San Sebastian College, Infant Jesus Academy of Pampanga, Arellano University, St. Michael, UNO, Philippine Cultural College, Lyceum and AMA.

    Group B will have Mapua, Xavier School, Holy Cross-Pampanga, National University, St. Joseph, Manila Patriotic School, St. Jude, San Benildo and University of Perpetual Help.

    ^ Since we don't get updates on Fr Martin schedules as regularly as we used to in the regime of the late great Joey Lim, we would really appreciate it if those with schedules - even if it is just for your school - would share those here. Of course if you could post the full schedule for a given game day that would be sweet.

    Batang Gilas tame Red Lions for 1st win in Fr. Martin Cup

    MANILA, Philippines -- The Batang Gilas, the Mapua Red Robins and the Xavier School Golden Stallions turned back their foes over the weekend in the 13th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano gymnasium in Legarda, Manila.

    Jonas Tibayan fired 16 points while Dave Ildefonso shot 15 for the national youth U-16 side as they repulsed the San Beda Red Lions, 78-71, to pick up their first win in two games in Group A of the senior division.

    Enzo Serrano tallied 26 points for the Red Robins in their 71-60 demolition of the University of Perpetual Help Junior Altas in Group B of the junior division.

    The Tyler Tio-led Golden Stallions leaned on the free throws to escape with a 91-88 win over the National University Bullpups in another Group B action.

    The Red Robins, who limited the Junior Altas to nine points in the third period to take a 52-43 edge, and post their second straight triumph.

    Tio made 19 points, including seven free throws in the last six seconds which carried the Golden Stallions their third consecutive triumph.

    Tibayan and Samjosef Belangel scored four charities in the last 31.1 seconds, allowing Gilas to pick up their first triumph in two matches in Group A.

    In other games, the Arellano Chiefs notched their second straight win, stopping University of Perpetual Help-Molino, 82-69, in another senior match.

    The San Beda Red Lions, behind Franz Abuda with 11 points, trounced Mary the Queen College, 83-68.

    The San Sebastian Staglets waylaid Philippine Cultural College, 57-45.
