    Shakey’s V-League semis starts
    By June Navarro
Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:09 am | Sunday, May 11th, 2014

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion National University and Adamson will try to ride the momentum that brought them to the Final Four of the Shakey’s V-League Season II First Conference when they face separate semifinal opponents Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Invincible in their bracket, the Lady Bulldogs face the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses in their best-of-three duel at 4 p.m. while the Lady Falcons open their series against the Far Eastern U Lady Tamaraws earlier at 2.

The Lady Bulldogs swept all their three assignments to secure the top seeding in their group while the Lady Falcons won their last two games in the other bracket to emerge No. 1 after a shaky start in the quarterfinals.

Though Adamson could build on those victories, the Falcons should brace for a tough stand from the Lady Tamaraws, who were into serious contenders with the sudden entries of Rachel Ann Daquis and Jovelyn Gonzaga as reinforcements.

Adamson will also have to contend with FEU hitters Mary Joy Palma and Bernadette Pons.

Shiela Pineda, Pau Soriano and Thai Pacharee Sangmuang are expected to star for the Lady Falcons after combining well in their surprising quarterfinal victory over the Tigresses.

The Falcons will also bank on Mylene Paat, May Macatuno, Marleen Cortel and Amanda Villanueva.

Towering sisters Jaja and Dindin Santiago are the focal points of the Lady Bulldogs’ offense as they aim to duplicate a victory in the eliminations over the Tigresses and move within a win of making a return trip to the Finals.

The Tigresses will lean on ace high school hitter Ennajie Laure, Carmela Tunay, Rhea Dimaculangan, Pam Lastimosa and Marivic Meneses.

FEU Lady Tams down Adamson Lady Falcons in straight sets to force rubber match for finals berth
    From: Mei-Lin Lozada
    •May 13, 2014, 06:50 pm

FAR Eastern University forced a rubber match for a finals berth as it dominated Adamson University, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24, on Tuesday in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 First Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Bernadette Pons came up with 16 points as the Lady Tamaraws won the second match of the best-of-three semis in straight sets after losing the opener in five.

Guest players Rachel Anne Daquis and Jovelyn Gonzaga had 15 and 14, respectively, for FEU, which is looking to reach the V-League finals for the first time.

“Sabi ko sa mga bata, ang laki ng chance na binigay sa atin kaya ’wag natin pakawalan at i-grab natin ang opportunity, sayang naman,” said FEU coach Shaq de los Santos.

Down by two, 22-24, Bhebs Pineda gave Adamson some hope, coming up with back-to-back hits to tie the game at 24.

But Geneveve Casugod scored on a spike to position the Lady Tams at second match point, 25-24, and Pineda handed FEU the win after a hit that went wide.

The Morayta-based Lady Tamaraws earned points with their defense at the net, registering 10 block points, while the Lady Falcons had five.

“No. 1 talaga ang depensa. Sabi ko sa mga bata na talo tayo sa tibay ng depensa ng Adamson sa Game One," said delos Santos.

“Kailangan pumantay tayo, ’di tayo mananalo kung puro atake lang. Kaya may adjustment kami sa block kay Pineda. Good thing nag click naman, thank God."

“Wala kasi mangyayari kung hindi kami de-depensa eh,” he added.

Pineda finished with 15 markers, Thai reinforcement Pacharee Sangmuang had 12 points, and Pau Soriano added 10 for Adamson.

The decider is set at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
