Showdown: Back to Toyota-Crispa
June 1979

It was defending champion Toyota which first got a foot in the door leading to the finals of this year's All-Filipino. Opening with a hard-earned 99-88 victory over Filmanbank, it's title-playoff opponent in last year's All-Filipino, the powerhouse Tamaraws were again forced to go flat-out in their next game in the double-round semifinals before pulling out an uneasy five-point 109-104 win over the Tanduay Esquires.
Then it was the time for their first encounter in the semis and their third against arch rivals Crispa Redmanizers. Staged before the third sellout PBA turnout of the season, the match was typically Toyota-Crispa a great part of the way as the Tamaraws raced off to a 12-point lead, lost steam and then the edge in the third quarter which saw the Redmanizers lead by as much as 11 points, but then came back with all barrels blazing in the fiery fourth quarter to pull off a 120-111 victory. The win was Toyota's third straight in the round of four and it gave the Tams at least a tie for a berth in the title playoffs.
Three days later on June 19, the Tamaraws repeated over Filmanbank in the semis, 131-114, to earned a second straight crack at the title, earlier on the same day, Crispa moved to within a win of joining Toyota in the finals when it got over a shaky third quarter to win over Tanduay Esquires, 100-87.
