Ravena Leads Ateneo in OT Win in Fr Martin Cup

The defending champion Ateneo-A Blue Eagles got a scare from the Fatima University Phoenix and escaped with a 88-84 overtime win Saturday in the start of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gym of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

The Blue Eagles, who lost rookie and Far Eastern University transferee Jerie Pingoy Jr. to an injury in the start of the extension period, got a lift from Juami Tiongson, Ryan Buenafe and Kiefer Ravena as they moved of range in the extra five minutes.

With the count tied at 75-all at the end of regulation, Pingoy got hurt as the Phoenix moved ahead on two turnovers, and took charge, 80-75, on a pair of baskets by Jon Juanico, and a free throw from Jormyl Jornacion.

Offensive plays from Ravena, Tiongson and Buenafe then allowed the Blue Eagles to turn the tables on the Phoenix for an 83-80 advantage.

Ravena, who finished with 21 points, put the Blue Eagles out of range, 85-80, off his two freebies in the last 22.6 seconds.

It was Ravena’s split charity with 11.1 ticks left which allowed the Blue Eagles to force an overtime, 75-all.

His basket came after the Ralph Rivera-coached Phoenix last took charge, 75-70, off Joven Datu’s gift shot in the remaining 2:05.

In the other senior encounter, Ateneo-B leaned on two triples from Marky Mercado and Ace Basas’ nine point output in the extra five minutes to waylay the Lyceum Pirates, 80-72, in overtime.

In the junior division, Marc Framil had 18 points for San Beda-A, which walloped Ateneo Blue, 128-47, while San Beda-B demolished Ateneo White, 83-44.
