Far Eastern University completed a perfect run to the UAAP 75 women's basketball title as they beat De La Salle Unviersity in Game 2 of the Finals.
Perfect.
Far Eastern University completed an unbeaten run to the championship after disposing of De La Salle University, 70-66, in their 75th UAAP women's basketball tournament finals series Thursday morning at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Tamaraws engaged the Lady Archers in a fierce battle before a quick 5-0 spurt gave them enough cushion to seal the win late in the game.
After Hannah Viterbo tied the game with a triple, Vangie Soriano responded with a connection from rainbow territory of her own before a Camille Sambile basket put them up, 64-59, with two minutes left.
La Salle star Ara Abaca scored off a hook shot to trim the gap to three but season MVP Allana Lim fittingly ended her career for FEU by dooming the Lady Archers' hopes with two free throws, 66-61.
Viterbo drilled in three free-throws but the Taft-based squad could not pull off a defensive gem as the Lady Tamaraws annexed their 11th crown in UAAP history, tied for the most with University of Santo Tomas.
"Sobrang pressured talaga," said coach Allan Albano, who won his second championship in as many years at the helm. "Trabaho, dasal at talagang naniwala lang kami sa sistema namin."
Lim poured in 15 points and 12 rebounds even as Sambile shone bright in the Last Dance with 16 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.
Marilourd Borja, who was named Finals MVP, chipped in with another all-around performance of 14 markers, five boards, seven assists, four steals and a swat while Soriano had 12 points and six rebounds.
On the other hand, Piatos led La Salle with 16 points and two steals and Abaca struggled once more to finish with 12 points and five rebounds.

FEU (70) - Sambile 16, Lim 15, Borja 14, Soriano 12, Siat 4, Columna 3, Valenzona 2, Gesalan 2, Tanaman 2

'Secret weapon' powers FEU to juniors crown
By Richard Hahn Posted Oct 11th 2012
Far Eastern University outlasted National University in triple overtime to bag its first UAAP juniors basketball crown since 1987.
He was their "secret weapon." And when Far Eastern University finally unleashed him, he proved to be unstoppable.
Roger Domingo hustled for offensive boards and drilled in all-important three-pointers to power Far Eastern University to a pulsating 113-109 triple-overtime triumph over hard-fighting National University and get the 75th UAAP juniors' basketball crown Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Both teams refused to give up, but it was Domingo who delivered the biggest blows for the Baby Tamaraws, who won their first crown since transferring to Diliman.
"Siya yung secret weapon namin," said coach Mike Oliver. "Biruan na namin yun last year pa."
Domingo, also the hero of their Game 1 win, scattered five triples and finished with 23 points and nine rebounds while season MVP Jerie Pingoy had another monster effort with 32 markers, 11 boards, seven dimes and three steals.
"Yung mga bata ayaw mag-give-up," Oliver added. "Sabi ko, focus lang tayo at maglaro."
The Baby Tamaraws seemed on the verge of pulling away after Joshua Aguilon streaked for a layup, 78-73, with 3:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.
But NU fought their way back and, aided by a free throw from Rookie of the Year Reggie Morido, forced overtime.
The next two periods saw both squads exchanging clutch basket after clutch basket before Domingo and Pingoy sealed the Bullpups' fate with an 8-2 blast that settled matters.
Raph Atangan played 51 minutes and tallied 26 points and seven rebounds before fouling out while Hubert Cani helped NU stay alive in the third overtime and finished with 19 points, eight boards, seven assists and two steals.
The scores:
FEU (113) - Pingoy 32, R. Domingo 23, Aguilon 15, Delfinado 14, J. Domingo 11, Lee Yu 9, Lumba 3, You 0, Magbuhos 0, Hassan 0, Escoto 0
NU (109) - Atangan 26, Cani 19, Biteng 17, Cauilan 13, Morido 10, Battad 9, Canaynay 7, Lopena 3, Busa 3, Dela Cruz 2, Mosqueda 0, Lapiz 0, Castillo 0, Banawan 0

FEU wins juniors, women's UAAP crowns

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU)-Diliman leaned anew on Roger Domingo's clutch shooting to outlast National University (NU) in three overtime periods, 113-109, to crown themselves 75th UAAP juniors basketball champions dethroning the Bulldogs today at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Domingo, who starred in FEU's 78-77 triumph in Game 1 with a pivotal trey, hit two of his five triples in the third extension as the Baby Tams ascended to the throne for the first time since rejoining the league in 2005. It was also Baby Tams' first juniors crown since their former team from Morayta led by Johnny Abarrientos won in 1987.
The Baby Tams' triumph completed a double for FEU as the Lady Tams earlier dispatched La Salle, 70-66, to batter their way into the women's title via an unprecedented sweep of all their 16 assignments this year.
Domingo finished with 23 points on a five-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc in 47 minutes, his last triple giving the Baby Tams a 112-106 lead with 1:18 left, en route to the Finals MVP plum. Back-to-back season MVP Jerie Pingoy fired 32 points in 43 minutes, including four in OT 3, to go with 11 rebounds and seven asists.
"Ang biruan namin simula nung last year, siya yung S.W. namin, secret weapon. Talagang binuka namin sa kanya yan, sabi namin, ‘ready ka lang’ (We're fondly calling Roger Domingo our secret weapon. We really set those kick-out plays for him, telling him to just be ready)," said FEU coach Michael Oliver, who went to the courtside seats to hug and kiss his wife immediately after the final buzzer.
The Baby Tams actually enjoyed an 11-point lead in the third but allowed the Bullpups to catch up. FEU also had the upperhand entering the stretch of the fourth, the first overtime and second extension but failed to deliver the coup de grace against a resilient rival in each time.
"Nung first at second overtime, may chance manalo ang problema nagkaroon ng miscommunication sa defense. Yung mga bata ayaw mag-give up; sabi namin laro lang, pare, focus, depensa. (We had a chance to win it outright if not for miscommunication in defense that allowed NU to tie it. The boys wouldn't want to give up)," said Oliver.
Joshua Aguilon added 15 points while Jeson Delfinado had a 14-point, 10-rebound effort to complement Pingoy and Domingo.
Raphael Atangan paced the Bullpups with 26 markers, backstopped by Hubert Cani's 19 and Exiquiel Biteng's 17.
Sweep for Lady Tams
The Lady Tams authored the first sweep of the entire basketball season since the institution of the Final Four. University of Santo Tomas previously went unbeaten in the 14-game elims in 1993 and got the outright title as per rules back then. University of the East also swept the elims in 2007 to get automatic berth to the best-of-three finals but lost to La Salle, 0-2.
"Trabaho, dasal saka paniniwala lang sa system. Grabe ang pressure na mag-16-0 (It was a product of hard work, prayers and belief in the system. Pressure to go 16-0 was too much)," said FEU coach Allan Albano, recalling how expectations got higher and higher when the team went 7-0, then 14-0, and when they won the first game of the finals, 64-56.
Camille Sambile dished out a 16-16 effort while season MVP Allana Lim added 15 markers and 12 boards and finals MVP Soc Borja chipped in 14 points, seven assists and four steals to contribute to thrice-to-beat FEU's second straight tiara.
"Sobrang fulfillment kasi for five years, naka-three championships ako. Record pa, 16-0. Ang saya ng exit. (This is a graceful exit for me, third title in five years, record 16-0)," said Borja, who was rewarded with finals MVP plum with averages of 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block.
Trisha Piatos paced the Lady Archers with 16 markers followed by Aracelio Abaca's 12 and Kady Wilson's 10 and 12 boards.
FEU's double championship somehow made up for the Tams' disastrous campaign in the men's division, where they failed to reach the Final Four.

FEU Baby Tamaraws win UAAP basketball title
MANILA, Philippines—It took the best effort from best player Jerie Pingoy and another clutch showing from Roger Domingo to finally nab the UAAP juniors basketball title after two and half decades.
Pingoy was just at the top of his game, but Domingo took care of the clutch shots as FEU-Diliman outlasted National University, 113-109, in a gruelling three-overtime match Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Pingoy, who also claimed the Most Valuable Player award, dropped 32 big points—more than half of it in the three extensions—11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
“Medyo gigil si Pingoy, but in the end, he was still the one who carried us,” said Oliver of the star guard.
The last time the Baby Tamaraws won the title was in the time of Johnny Abarrientos in 1987, and Oliver thinks Pingoy could be in the mold of the legendary guard.
Pingoy banked a shot with a minute and half left, but it was a triple from Domingo which stretched the lead to six points, 112-106, which came as a huge relief in such a tight game.
“We’ve always joked since last year that Domingo is our ‘secret weaopon’,” said head coach Mike Oliver. “He proved today how much of a shooter he really is.”
Domingo, who also nailed a game-clinching triple in the first Baby Tamaraws 78-77 win, added 23 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
It was fitting that the finals MVP plum was awarded to Domingo, who also played his final game with FEU, for his heroics all finals-long.
Domingo and Pingoy’s presence in the extra time was critical after exhaustion has taken its toll on the Baby Tamaraws as some have to be helped off the bench due to cramps.
“We actually had a chance to win in the first and second OT, but we had a miscommunication problem on the defense,” said Oliver.
Raphael Atangan led the Bullpups with 26 points as his squad leaned on his big buckets in regulation and the first two overtimes before fouling out of the game.
NU managed to send the game into another five minutes after Atangan found Exiquiel Biteng, who knocked down a game-tying trey at 100, from the corner.
Hubert Cani added 19 markers for the Bullpups, who was the only squad who managed to defeat the Baby Tamaraws but ultimately failed on their title defense.

UAAP Champion Eyes PSSBC Title
After winning the UAAP crown, Far Eastern University also hopes to win the first Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) to cap a glorious year.
Through the exploits of MVP winner Jerie Pingoy and Roger Domingo, the Baby Tamaraws outlasted the National University Bullpups, 113-109, in triple-overtime to finally end a 25-year title drought.
The Baby Tamaraws also won the Fil-Chinese Basketball League early this year.
The 5-foot-7 Pingoy is touted as the heir apparent of Johnny Abarrientos for his wondrous moves, silky touch and court leadership – traits that made him now one of the most-sought after collegiate rookies.
Standing its way are reigning champion San Beda College and San Sebastian College from NCAA and multi-titled Chiang Kai Shek College and Xavier School from Tiong Lian.
Also invited in the tournament sponsored by Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Wrangler, Dickies Underwear, MEC Networks, Ironcon Builders, Blackwater Sports, Hapee Toothpaste, and Welcoat House Paints are many-time UAAP champion, Ateneo, University of Santo Tomas, Letran, Hope Christian High School and La Salle Greenhills.
The tournament opens shop on Oct. 27 at The Arena in San Juan.
Meantime, league chairman Dr. Cecilio Pedro maintained that the prize money – P30,000 plus trophy and gift checks from Wrangler – won’t be the driving force for the players to excel.

FEU, SBC storm past rivals in PSSBC opener
(The Philippine Star)
Updated October 29, 2012 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - UAAP Jrs. champion Far Eastern University-Diliman and NCAA titlist San Beda College needed clutch plays from their top guns to turn back their respective rivals at the start of the first Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) at The Arena in San Juan over the weekend.
MVP Jerie Pingoy scored 22 points as the Baby Tamaraws repulsed the Chiang Kai Shek College Dragons, 81-77, in overtime.
The 5-foot-8 Pingoy knocked in two crucial jumpers in the extra period to help carry the Baby Tams past the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) champions.
Billed as the next Johnny Abarrientos of FEU, Pingoy also set the plays for his teammates, including Roger and JJ Domingo who chipped in 12 points each.
The Dragons, led by Joshua Tan and Al Salim, had two chances to steal the win in regulation but blew them both as the Baby Tams toughned up on defense.
San Beda also found the going tough against Hope Christian High School, another team from MMTLBA, as it came from behind to post a 95-91 victory in the other game.
University of Santo Tomas and San Sebastian College also struggled before hurdling their respective rivals.
Former Philippine U-18 standout Arvie Tolentino imposed his will inside as the Red Cubs, with a record 20 NCAA titles, turned back the Hope Christian side, which led majority of the way.
The HCHS cagers led, 65-58, early in the fourth period but made poor shot selections, enabling the Red Cubs to strike back and snatch the win in the tournament backed by Ironcon Builders, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Wrangler, Dickies Underwear, MEC Networks, Blackwater Sports, Hapee Toothpaste and Welcoat.
UST, on the other hand, downed last year’s UAAP champion National University, 72-63, while SSC also posted a 108-98 overtime win over multi-titled MMTLBA champion Xavier School.
Though CKSC, Hope and Xavier lost, league vice chairman Dioceldo Sy, who played for Uno High School during his Tiong Lian days, was happy with their performance.
“The Tiong Lian teams are fast catching up with UAAP and NCAA teams, sooner or later, they would be able to beat them,” said Sy, who thanked Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios and The STAR columnist Quinito Henson for gracing the affair.
Meantime, the FEU-CKSC game will be aired on Basketball TV (Channel 34) on Wednesday at 11 p.m. through the sponsorship of Davies Paints and Bon Chon Chicken.
