FEU TAMARAWS over ADU SOARING FALCONS, 65-62

Man, you gotta love these Tamaraws. They like it tight and down-the-wire.
This was the third game they played that was decided by less than a handful of points.
This was also their third straight win, and, consequently, they’re now at solo first with a 3-win 0-loss card.
But wait, that could’ve just as easily been a 0-win 3-loss card. That’s how tight their games have been.
What’s really impressive, however, is not exactly how FEU has beaten its foes, but WHO they’ve beaten.
    UST by 1.
    DLSU by 2.
    Adamson by 3.
Yes, there’s a very elementary arithmetic pattern going on, but try not to focus on that. Focus, instead, on the fact that all three teams are potential Final Four teams this season (yes, include the Falcons there even if the depletion of their roster has been exposed and expressed too many times already).
Sure, they’ve yet to go up against, arguably, the top two teams this season (NU & Ateneo), but, at least based on how they’ve been playing these past few games, FEU fans can count on Coach Bert Flores’s boys to really give ‘em some hell.
And the guy most responsible for giving Coach Leo Austria hell in this encounter?
    Terrence Romeo.
This was quite a surprise for me, since I’ve made no bones about critiquing his offense. In this game, he was not just offensively potent, he, quite literally, was making waves all over the hardwood. Romeo shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line for a total of 23 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds, dishing out 6 assists, getting 2 steals, and blocking 2 shots. The only wrinkle, really, was his 1-of-5 clip from beyond the arc. This was easily Romeo’s best performance of Season 75 so far, and one of the best of any player bar none.
The difference between the Romeo in this match and the ones in FEU’s first two games? Shot selection. Once again, Romeo chucked the most shots of any Tamaraw, but he didn’t settle for straight up jumpers as often as he usually does. He drove to the hole, he finished on the break, and he was just outright on attack mode. It looked like he was out to prove something, and, unfortunately for Adamson, he did exactly that in this game.
As great as Romeo was, however, it was someone else who really became the x-factor for the Moraytans. That guy was FEU newbie Mark Belo, who came off the pine to score 9 markers, collar 9 caroms, distribute 2 dimes, get 1 theft, and reject 1 shot. Despite fouling out with less than 6 minutes to play, Belo was the picture of efficiency, and we’ll probably seem more of him as FEU continues to chug along.
A lot of credit should go Adamson’s way, though. More than a week after getting beaten by the Eagles, the Falcons had all the reason in the world to feel deflated, but in this game they were anything but. Allen Etrone was scorching from rainbow country, Rodney Brondial was solid down low, and Jericho Cruz had a relatively good all-around performance.
The guys who were missing were Adamson’s top two guys. Eric Camson scored 11 points, but he shot just 2-of-7 from the field and grabbed only 3 rebounds. Alex Nuyles, meanwhile, had only 2 points in 26 minutes of play. Needless to say, Adamson fans want a lot more from their much-ballyhooed stars.
I’m also sure FEU fans wouldn’t mind if their own ballyhooed stars would produce a blowout anytime soon (calling UP and UE), but, as long as they end up winning, they probably also wouldn’t mind these tight and down-the-wire ones.
    Notable Performers:

    Terrence Romeo (FEU) – 23pts, 8rebs, 6asts, 2stls, 1blk

    Mark Belo (FEU) – 9pts, 9rebs, 2asts, 1stl, 1blk

    Rodney Brondial (AdU) – 11pts, 7rebs, 1ast, 1blk

After winning their first three games by a combined six points, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws have finally legitimized their perfect record with a convincing double-digit win.

The two-pronged guard combo of Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia combined for 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 16 assists, as the FEU Tamaraws blasted the University of the East Red Warriors by a total of 26 points, 92-66, Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, in the 75th season of the UAAP.

"Noong first quarter, masyado kaming relaxed. Nung second half, maganda na yung pagsasama nung team," said FEU head coach Bert Flores.

The Red Warriors were in command during the first quarter, even going as far as leading by nine points after a Roi Sumang triple which distanced them 18-9 from the lazy Tamaraws. Sumang, UE’s heady point guard, finished with eight points in the first off two triples and a drive in the lane.

FEU shook off the rust in the second quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points before Pedrito Galanza broke the slump with a turn-around jumper. Both teams traded barbs midway through the quarter until the Tams broke away, leading by as much as 13 after a triple by Garcia, and maintained by a pair of free throws from reserve Russel Escoto.

The Green and Gold’s lead swung from 11 to 16 points in the third quarter, as FEU found an answer for every score that Coach Jerry Codinera’s Warriors put up. Former DLSU Green Archer Arvie Bringas abused the UE’s interior defense, finishing with eight in the third quarter while helping his side maintain a safe 61-47 distance by the end of the period.

FEU continued to push in the fourth quarter, with spitfire Terrence Romeo picking up steam and torching UE’s guards with 10 points off two triples and two of his trademark jumpers off spin moves. Coach Bert Flores had the luxury of being able to empty his bench with three minutes left, spelling time for Jolas Guerrero, Raymar Jose, and Alejandrino Inigo, with endgame score at 92-66.

Romeo, a former UAAP Rookie of the Year, scored 19 points to lead all Tamaraws, while Garcia, once UAAP MVP, added 18. Big men Anthony Hargrove Jr. and Arvie Bringas added 11 apiece and combined for 17 rebounds, giving their backcourt ample support.

Sophomore Chris Javier topped the scoring charts for both sides with 20 points, coming close to a double-double with eight boards. Roi Sumang notched 16, while Jay-ar Sumido tallied 10 markers.

FEU stayed undefeated at 4-0, while UE sank to their third loss in as many outings. The Tamaraws will face a tough test though on Thursday, as they’re matched up against pre-season favorite NU Bulldogs.

"Mahirap pa rin i-maintain yung 4-0, kasi next game nga, NU. Okay materyales nila eh, walang nawala. Sa amin, maraming nawala. Gumagaling pa yung isang import namin," said Flores, giving his early assessment of the host school.

On the other hand, the Red Warriors will seek an upset on Saturday, when they face the reigning champions Ateneo Blue Eagles. - AMD, GMA News

Arvie is good for a role player. Not as a go to guy. But has a nice post move. Maybe overweight. Sometimes he is forcing his shot but sometimes very effective.

Against the NU Bulldogs, the FEU Tamaraws have to realize that they are facing a highly-touted pre-tournament favorite staring at yet another disappointing season this early. In their Hosting year.

At 2-2, NU cannot really afford a third loss in the first round. No team actually can. That might make the Bulldogs even more predictable, i.e. isolate Ray Parks, everybody just crash the boards, Emmanuel Mbe becomes just an afterthought left to scrounge for his own points by pounding the offensive boards.

FEU must take care of that basketball, maybe turn Terrence Romeo into a fulltime off-guard without the ball in his hands at least for this game, and let RR Garcia play decoy. Getting into a shootout with NU is not really a bad idea if your shooters are Romeo and Garcia, and Chris Tolomia hitting here and there. But the FEU defense has to hold inside. That perimeter with Parks going to the dribble-drive offense may be a lost cause for any defense. The same cannot be said for the interior, where Anthony Hargrove, Arvie and Tonton Bringas, and even Karl Cruz and Russel Escoto can play the passing lanes, jam drop steps and pivots, and also control the defensive boards.
