Red Lions, Lady Bulldogs reign in Martin Cup
(The Philippine Star) Updated February 27, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The defending champion San Beda Red Lions clinched a three-peat in the men’s division while the National U Lady Bulldogs claimed their first ever women’s crown Saturday in the eighth Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball finals.

Jake Pascual banged in a game-high 20 points, while Julius Armon hit 16 points, Romeo de la Rosa and Ola Adeogun fired 15 and 14 points, respectively, to help the Red Lions breeze past the Arellano University Chiefs, 89-66, in the winner-take-all men’s finals at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

The Lady Bulldogs squandered a 14-point advantage, and relied on a triple from Ma. Teresa Pama to bail them out of trouble and bag their first ever women’s plum with a 72-67 triumph over the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.

Baser Amer provided 10 points for the Red Lions, and he made four points during a decisive 10-0 run in the last two minutes of the second period.

Amer’s timely baskets allowed the Red Lions to turn the tables around on the Chiefs, who last led 28-27, off a triple by Rocky Acidre with 5:02 to go.

With the Chiefs’ prized recruit Keith Agovida held to just nine points all throughout, the Red Lions had little trouble moving further ahead after they posted a 12-point, 42-30 spread off Armon’s trey with 1:19 left, and before the end of the first half.
We had a head start in this game. At one time we had a glorious 3rd place finish in the World Championship and was the undisputed power in Asia. But the world has learned how to play it. They may not be as good as us,but they have enough smarts to make use of their height. That is enough to beat us.

San Beda Completes Fr Martin Grand Slam

Reigning NCAA champion San Beda College drew strong games from veteran forward Jake Pascual and new recruit Julius Armon to shred Arellano University 89-66. This title romp thus made it three straight Fr Martin Cup open championships for the Red Lions.

Arellano actually stayed toe to toe with San Beda for most of the first half, with new recruits Adam Serjue and James Forrester clicking from the perimeter, and Dioncee Holts limiting Red Lion center Ola Adeogun in the paint. The Chiefs were even up 27-28 at one point early in the second period on a three-pointer from veteran guard Rocky Acidre.

San Beda however went on a late tear thoward the end of the first half. Baser Amer led the breakaway by busting out in transition. An Amer And-1 play made it 39-30, before an Armon trey made it 42-30 for the Red Lions, and the boys from Mendiola were never threatened from that point.

Pascual, Anoe Caram, Adeogun, Amer and Armon kept up the torrid pace to start the third period. Melo Lim nailed a three-pointer with a matching sky-kiss late in the third period to make it 55-33. Keith Agovida mailed back-to-back baskets to try and get the Chiefs on a run, but none of his other teammates gave him a hand.

It wuld have been all over but the shouting were it not for Vergel Zulueta once again taking cheap shots at opposing players, including a whack to the face of Adeogun on a transition opportunity. As the action was at a different angle away from the view of the transitioning referee, Zulueta got away with it. Table officials did see it though, and instructed the referees to give Zulueta a warning.

Serjue had a two-handed slam dunk to end formal hostilities as Arthur Dela Cruz hauled in the game's last loose ball.

Pascual had 20 points to lead San Beda, while Armon added 16. Serjue had 14 points for the Chiefs.

In the awarding of trophies after the game, the Red Lions all wore t-shirts that proclaimed "Hey Coach - - - Got Your Back", in a clear reference in support of their head coach Frankie Lim, who is facing sanctions along with San Sebastian volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb, in connection with a fracas that involved both coaches during an NCAA volleyball tournament game held at San Beda's St Placid Gym couple of months ago. Lim and Gorayeb are reportedly facing suspensions because of that incident.
