Garcia, Ramos lift Tams past Green Archers07/10/2011 | 10:01 PM
Far Eastern University rode on to the second half efforts of veterans RR Garcia and Aldrech Ramos as the Tamaraws defeated De La Salle University Green Archers, 74-65, Sunday in the opening salvo of the 74th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
Garcia, last year's Most Valuable Player, scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half while Ramos tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals to give the Tamaraws a head start for the season.
FEU coach Bert Flores lauded the veterans who stepped up in the second half by doing a good job on breaking La Salle's vaunted pressing defense and good ball movement on offense.
“We want to bring back the pride of Tamaraws especially now that we have players who will be playing in their final year," said Flores in Filipino.
Garcia took over in the third quarter as he led a 17-6 salvo that helped turn a 35-39 deficit to a 52-45 FEU advantage after three quarters.
The Tams even led by 10 at 66-56, behind Ramos' back-to-back baskets with two minutes and 48 seconds left in the game.
The Green Archers had a 6-0 spurt to threaten for the last time, 66-62, with 1:11 left in the clock.
Ramos, however, found Garcia inside for a short stab to give FEU a 68-62 breathing room with 48.9 ticks to go.
"Hindi maganda ang simula ko pero malaki pa rin ang tiwala ni coach sa akin kaya nakabawi ako (I started out slow but good thing I have my coach's trust so I recovered)." said Garcia.
LA Revilla, in his first UAAP game after a two-year hiatus recovering from diabetes, led the Green Archers with 18 points as he was the only double-digit scorer for the Taft-based squad, which will face arch-rivals Ateneo next week. - Reuben Terrado/JVP/KBK, GMA News

MANILA—Ateneo coach Norman Black had said this just might be the toughest season yet for the Blue Eagles.
And the Eagles felt exactly that right in their maiden game as the three-time champions rallied to slip past the tenacious Adamson Falcons, 55-51, yesterday in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
he Eagles held the Falcons scoreless in the final seven minutes of the game that also saw the sensational debut of the controversial Greg Slaughter.
“It was pretty much what I expected, a defensive struggle,” said Black.
The 6-foot-11 Slaughter, who got the go-signal to play in the league just four days earlier, came out huge on both ends with 23 points on top of eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.
Kirk Long, who chipped in 10 points, got a crucial goal-tending call that gave the Eagles the lead for good at 53-51, after Ateneo trailed, 44-51, in the closing minutes.
Last year’s runner-up Far Eastern University also got its campaign going with a 74-65 victory over La Salle in the first game.
RR Garcia showcased the form that bagged him last season’s MVP, firing 17 of his 21 points in the second half as the Tamaraws took full control.
Aside from praising Garcia and his big men led by Aldrech Ramos, coach Bert Flores also noted his Tamaraws’ patience in breaking the Green Archers’ trademark pressure defense.
“We were able to break La Salle’s press, that’s the key,” said Flores. “We also played good defense and had good ball movement.”
Ramos had 16 points and eight rebounds and Carl Cruz and Mark Bringas also provided muscle down low to help fill the gap left by injured Cameroonian forward Pipo Noundou.
The Falcons, whose losing streak to the Eagles stretched to 29 games dating back to 1997, shot a horrible 2-of-21 from the field in the final period.
Adamson’s last basket came from Kenyan Austin Manyara, 51-44, with 6:58 minutes left, before Slaughter fired five of Ateneo’s next seven points to knot the game at 51.
“The advantage we had was we could drop the ball in the post to Greg,” said Black. “We really tried to take advantage of that.”
Two free throws by Emman Monfort with 16.3 seconds left sealed the Eagles’ win.
Kiefer Ravena, Ateneo’s other celebrated rookie, had a scoreless debut but registered two rebounds and an assist in 14 minutes of play.
The Tamaraws posted their first double-digit advantage at 58-48 after Garcia opened the fourth period with back-to-back triples.
“I was still adjusting in the first half, so I just played decoy, but I found my rhythm in the second half,” said Garcia, who also drew support from last year’s top rookie Terrence Romeo.
Romeo grabbed eight boards and dished out eight assists to go with his six points.
LA Revilla, who was sidelined by illness for two seasons, paced the Archers with 18 points, five boards and five assists.

ok ha hindi na bwakaw si romeo keep it up..hahahaha.
FEU ran a play they were already running in the Fil Oil and strangely Lasalle did not adjust to it: JR Cawaling got lots of good looks from outside and sank two treys that helped pad leads for the Tamaraws just when Lasalle was threatening. Those were essentially the same swing-reverse plays to corner and quarter-court shooters FEU ran for Paul Sanga all of last year. I think Coach Dindo Pumaren didn't really put hands in Cawaling's face because unlike Sanga Cawaling can drive when he sees a hard-show by the defense, i.e. dare him to beat you with his long shot than with a dribble-drive. Unfortunately Cawaling sank a good number of those shots. He also got those passes coming off the short pass-back on the dribble-penetration of RR Garcia or Terrence Romeo.
FRIENDS LANG KAMI
Yes LakazTama. Good start. Hope we sustain this til the end.
Anyway, mahihirapan pa talaga ang La Salle against FEU with their current line up. I mean man to man mas angat tayo. But even with that case pinahirapan pa rin tayo ng La Salle.
I would like to commend coach Bert for utilizing Carl Cruz to the hilt. I believe this guy will make a difference for us this season.
But Ateneo is still the team to beat.
Sa PILIPINAS, walang NATATALO, NADADAYA lang.

Falcons blow by FEU
by Adrian Dy
Saturday, 16 July 2011 41 Comments Share9WITH both teams’ point guards celebrating their birthday, it was Lester Alvarez’s Adamson Falcons that wound up with a better afternoon.
Watching from the bench down the stretch, Alvarez got to revel in Adamson University’s huge 78-59 triumph over Far Eastern University in UAAP Season 74 last July 16 at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Nanalo kami siguro dito because of our defense,” said Adamson head coach Leo Austria. “Dahil sa defense namin nag-cause ng a lot of turnovers para sa kanila. And then yung offensive rebounding namin…nakakuha kami ng 18 points.”
The other birthday boy, Jens Knuttel, and his squad never got a taste of the lead, as Adamson led from start to finish, beginning with a huge 12-5 start that sent the Tams reeling right from the get-go. Alex Nuyles poured in 10 of his game-high 22 in the first quarter as his relentless attacks at the rim forged a nine-point advantage after the opening period.
Last season’s runners-up got to within six late in the second quarter, 40-34, on a triple by JR Cawaling, before Nuyles calmly sank two free throws to tow his team into the break with a 42-34 lead. Not content with the eight-point lead, the Falcons came out swinging in the third, jumping out to a 10-2 run that saw four different Falcons contribute baskets, doubling the gulf between both sides. Following an Adamson timeout at the 2:56 mark of the third, FEU turned to its veterans as Cawaling, RR Garcia and Aldrech Ramos nailed a variety of shots from various angles, cutting Adamson’s lead down to seven, 56-49.
FEU’s flurry of points extended up to the fourth with an 8-4 mini-blast to pull within three, 60-57. But Garcia gave it right back on the next possession, tossing a pass to the direction of Jerick Cañada, who swooped in for the easy two. Terrence Romeo blew a layup on the succeeding possession, and the teamwork of the Falcons took over, first with a dish from Nuyles to a cutting Eric Camson, followed by two perfectly thrown alley-oops Cañada, first to Camson again, and then to Janus Lozada as the Falcons hiked their lead back to double-digits, 68-57, with four minutes to play. Twin charities by Aldrech Ramos at the 3:49 mark made it a nine-point deficit, but those turned out to be the last points FEU scored as the Falcons took over from there, scoring the game’s last 10 points.
It was a marked difference from their season-opener versus Ateneo, where the Falcons led late, only to go scoreless over the last seven minutes. Said Austria, “Ako na-surprise dahil [sa] endgame usually ineexpect nila…nawawala kami. This time though, after nag-rally ang FEU from 16 down…we were able to recover at naitaas pa namin [the margin of victory]. I guess nadedevelop na ang character ng team.”
Camson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Lozada and Jan Colina had eight points each. Center Austin Manyara turned in another defensive gem, scoring six points, hauling down seven rebounds and swatting three shots. All together, the Falcons combined for 50 points in the paint to just 20 by FEU.
The Tamaraws were led by Garcia’s 20 points and four assists. Ramos chipped in 14 points and six caroms, while Cawaling helped out with 11.
After the loss, FEU head coach Bert Flores bemoaned his side’s inability to pull down rebounds, noting that the Falcons collared 13 more boards and had 18 additional second-chance points. “Masyadong masaya sa Kobe [Bryant],” Flores said dryly, referring to several of his Tamaraws’ get-together with the NBA superstar last July 13.
The scores:
Adamson 78 – Nuyles 22, Camson 12, Lozada 8, Colina 8, Manyara 6, Petilos 5, Cañada 5, Etrone 4, Cabrera 3, Brondial 2, Alvarez 2, Monteclaro 1, Manuel 0, Agustin 0, Rios 0, Olalia 0
FEU 59 – Garcia 20, Ramos 14, Cawaling 11, Romeo 5, Tolomia 4, Cruz 2, Exciminiano 2, Escoto 1, Sentcheu 0, Pogoy 0, Foronda 0, Bringas 0, Knuttel 0
Quarter scoring: 25-16, 42-34, 56-49, 78-59
