    Hoops Scoops (The Ironcoach's Saga)

These past few days, it has come to light that former UE Coach Lawrence Chongson has been very active in cyberspace. If you had an opportunity to ask him a question, what would it be?

    Mine would be:

Given his revelation that in the current UE lineup, only Ken Acibar is PBA quality, how does he balance athletics with academics since some professors are known to be lenient and automatically pass varsity team members even without attending their classes?

Can the collegiate leagues implement a US NCAA style APR (academic progress rate) system? Is it time for the NCAA & the UAAP be managed by an independent office free from the trappings of the "old boy system" in which Trustees vote for school interests over the general welfare of the league?

Coach, is there any truth to talk that Cobra still owes certain players back pay from the last PBL conference won by Excel Roof?

Coach, whose decision was it to fire Rene Baena and then re-hire him anyway?

wala akong masasagot na matino dyan sa tanong mo. im just d basketball coach but i do encourage my players to get a degree. in fact, i was informed by the ue marketing director that it was under my tenure that had the most number of red warriors that graduated (i.e. espiritu, acuna, martinez, etrone, lingganay, bandaying & zamar). we do have a professor (sir gabs) in charge of monitoring the players' academic proficiency.

the cobra team u wr referring to was composed of paul lee, pari llagas, mark fampulme, jai reyes, allan mangahas, mark sarangay, edwin torres, marvin hayes, pj barua, greg aguilar, chris camus. who do you suppose we owe money to?? i even put up 2 teams that conference, the other 1 being cossack blue vodka. we've been in the PBL for d past 5 years and had players like JR Quinahan, ronjay buenafe, josh urbiztondo, rey guevarra,JR aquimo, jim viray, jason ballesteros, then jai reyes, hyram bagatsing,jr taganas & patrick cabahug among others. who did we ever owe money or back pay to?? how come not even 1 player has ever come forward or better yet, approach me abt it? cobra is owned asia brewery. d maximum PBL monthly salary is 25,000. do u think we would short-change a player with that amount of money??

paul didn't want to play for another coach and thats his personal decision. yung mga huling batches ng red warriors eh matatalino na. kung saan nila alam na mapapaganda ang career at buhay nila, yun ang susundin nila. hindi na nasu-sulsulan ang mga yan. like in paul's case, he knows that he's ripe for the pros already. he was born poor, grew up poor, and he wants to see those million pesos figures as soon as he can. nobody should deprive him of that chance.

im not paul's manager. yung pagkaka-type mo ng "manager ka na din pala" would suggest na yan ang belief mo whether may katibayan ka or haka-haka mo lang. kung may kita ba ang college player?? in my 2 years at ue, u can say that we took care of all the key players for them to play their best at all times. kung tinuruan ko ba si paul gumawa ng kita?? tinuruan ko syang mag-ipon tsaka wag pa-abuso sa mga taong malalapit sa kanya.

hindi ba parang baliktad?? yung mga profs ang lenient sa mga players tapos yung basketball coach ang inaasahan mong gumawa ng paraan para higpitan sila sa grades?? we cannot implement so many things in our society. jaywalking, littering, anti-squatting, street children, smoke-belching, traffic violations, human rights violations, etc. maraming bagay ang mahirap ng baguhin dahil naka-ugalian na. but pray hard. maybe in the next life. who knows?

one reason why it ain't that bad not to be a college basketball coach anymore.
