PBA D-League coaches want rookie draft in place to balance lineups
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Tuesday, November 27, 2012 · 7:39 pm

“It’s not balanced anymore. Yung mga malalaking teams, nakukuha nila yung mga malalakas na players,” said Blackwater coach Leo Isaac, who added he understands why the league hasn’t instituted a draft just yet.

“Hindi pa magawa yung drafting because teams cannot commit to stay longer. How can we do the drafting if may mga teams na sasali then aalis agad? For us to have a drafting, teams must be committed to stay for at least three years.”

Air 21-Jose Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses said the league has to take that step first as an incentive for teams to stay in the league.

“When there’s balance, teams or franchises will be inclined to stay and participate longer, providing more stability for the league,” said Meneses.

The powerhouse NLEX Road Warriors have won all three D-League tournaments so far. The team will soon be welcoming 7-foot center Greg Slaughter to its fold, even as it has remained undefeated in 22 games dating back to last season.

Cebuana Lhuillier coach Beaujing Acot said having a draft in the D-League would help not just teams, but players as well.

“I think the drafting is not only aimed at balancing the competition, but also a vehicle to develop new talents,” said Acot, who added that imbalance not the only problems that the D-League faces.

“We should also be in a lookout regarding our rules wherein we implement the school-based policy “Ang nangyayari, yung teams nakikipag-tie up sa mga schools not just to establish chemistry on their teams, but para maka-take advantage na mayroong silang imports.”
