In 1993, the University of Manila Hawks, then CAACUP co-champion with Perpetual Help College of Manila, became the first team outside the NCAA and UAAP to win the national intercollegiate title.

Under coach Loreto Tolentino, who played for the UM Hawks in the 70s, UM defeated University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, the reigning Negros Occidental basketball champion, 64-58, before a fullhouse crowd at the University of Nueva Caceres Gym, home of the UNC Greyhounds, one of two bicol teams that competed in the annual cagefest.

Among the Hawks' players who ruled the tourney were:

Oscar Simon
Cris Bolado
Joel Dualan
Erwin Framo
Allan Marticio
Tom Tauro - who got individual honors as the best point guard, besting Asian Youth and PBL veteran Emmanuel Victoria of San Beda.
