Olympians 2nd Semester Games

To be able to hone their basketball skills so that they will be prepared for the 10th NAASCU come July 2010, The STI College Olympians Seniors and Juniors teams have entered two tournaments this semester. The Juniors are playing in the National Juniors Championships 18 and under bracket while the Seniors will see action in the Father Martin's Cup. Good luck to the Olympians

STI College brought down St. Clare College-Caloocan, 79-68, for its first win in the boys 19 and under class in the National Capital Region (NCR) eliminations for the National Students Basketball Championships at the EAC Sports Center in Manila.

Cedrick Ablaza, Lester Bocablo and James Sabacahan provided the firepower for the Olympians, who posted their first win in the prestigious competition organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) thru Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem.

Ablaza scored 19 points, Bocablo added 18 and Sabacahan had 12 for STI.

Ian Paltao paced St. Clare with 12 points.

In the boys 17 years old and under category, Adamson University outsteadied St. Clare College, 72-65, behind the hot hands of Jay Manlangit and Kenneth Llaunders.

Manlangit scattered 18 points and Llaunders added 17 points for the Baby Falcons, who needed a strong finish to subdue the hard-fighting Baby Saints.

Flyn Macapungay carried the fight for the Caloocan City-based Baby Saints of coach Ernie Laure and George Longalong with 25 markers.

Adamson completed a rare double when it defeated University f the East, 65-58, in the women’s division.

Kat Sandez and Angelica Ortega combined for 37 points for the Lady Falcons.

Cindy Resultay led the Lady Warriors with 33 points.

The top four teams in this tournament will earn the right to represent NCR in the national finals scheduled in Cagayan de Oro City next month.

UNIVERSITY of the East crushed UAAP rival Adamson University, 72-57, to emerge as the champion in the boys 17 years old and under category in the National Capital Region (NCR) eliminations for the National Junior Basketball Championship at the EAC Sports Center.

Handled by multi-titled coach Mark Herrera, the Recto-based Junior Warriors got big games from Isiah Banawa, Carlo Duncil and Kevin Fernandez to beat the Baby Falcons

Banawa topscored with 16 points for UE, which got the top seed in National Finals to be held in Cagayan de Oro next month.

Duncil added 15 points and Fernandez contributed 13 points for UE.

“We’re happy to add this championship to our collection. But there is still a lot of work to do, beginning with the Naitonal Finals in Cagayan de Oro,” said Herrerra, who was ably assisted by Benjie Diswe, Jeus Albano and Edwin Ancheta.

Sherwin Gutierez, Christian Canicula and Joshue Diswe also played well for the Juniors Warriors.

John Llaunders finished with 13 points for the Jing Ruiz-mentored Baby Falcons.

In the 19 years old and under category, Far Eastern University outclassed Our Lady of Fatima University, 88-74, to move within a game of bagging the title.

Kervin Ortuoste scored 16 points for the Baby Tamaraws, followed by Terrence Romeo with 15 and Carl Bryan Cruz with 14.

FEU, which is being handled by coach Glen Capacio, needs only to beat STI College at 1 p.m. today to sweep the elimination and clinch the title.

STI primed itself up for the crucial encounter against FEU by humbling University of Manila, 66-59.

Cedric Ablaza fired 33 points and Lester Bocablo added 25 points for the Global City-based Juniors Olympians.

Jerry Ancheta paced the Hawklets with 21 points, followed by Vincent Garcia with 19.

In the women’s division UE defeated St. Clare College-Caloocan, 71-57.
