Niños face Landmasters in TOP tuneup
By EBV (The Freeman) Updated June 03, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Two-time Liga Pilipinas national champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños of legendary coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba take another vital step in fine-tuning the team as they play against the Mandaue City Landmasters in an exhibition match at 6 pm this Saturday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The Niños-Landmasters showdown serves as the final phase of their rigid preparations for the Tournament of the Philippines (TOP), a joint venture of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and Liga Pilipinas set to take off on June 9 in Manila.

Save for a few additions in Fil-Am guard Shawn Weinstein whom they picked in the Rookie Draft and comebacking playmaker Warren Ybañez, the Niños will parade the same lineup that ruled the Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 via an amazing 21-game winning streak.

They are Bruce Dacia, Stephen Padilla, Abby Santos, Marlon Basco, Ariel Mepaña, Mark Magsumbol, Mark Ababon, Hafer Mondragon, Nat Cruz, and Franklin Nailon. Star guard Woodrow Enriquez is out of commission as he is still recuperating from a cervical injury.

The Landmasters of team owner Joe Soberano and head coach Al Solis, on the other hand, are still in the process of building up a strong fighting crew although Solis said they have already spotted a mixture of collegiate stars and commercial veterans to form the core of the team.

Among them, Solis said, are Jet Latonio, Alano Caputolan, Rino Berami, Michael Luga, Ronald Bucao and collegiate standouts in Chris Victor Diputado and Ritchum Dennison of the UV Lancers and Eric Zanoria of the SWU Cobras. They will be reinforced by big men John Villaver and Jay-R Gerilla.

Landmasters team manager Atty. Hidelito Pascual said their game against M. Lhuillier would also serve as their final try-out.

“We find the core of our team already but our game against M. Lhuillier will serve as our final try-out. After that, then maybe we will announce our line-up on Monday at the latest,” said Pascual. – THE FREEMAN

THE REIGNING Liga Pilipinas champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños are right on track in their gear-up for the upcoming Philippine Basketball League-Liga tournament after they asserted their might over the newly-formed Mandaue Landmasters, 82-66, in an exhibition game yesterday at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The Niños of head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba did not miss a step from their 21-game winning streak in the third conference of the Liga, wherein they annexed their second championship.

They led 40-25 at halftime and were never threatened after that as they maintained a 64-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Former Liga MVP Marlon Basco led the Niños' balanced scoring attack with 13 points while Fil-Am rookie wingman Shawn Weinstein and former University of the Philippines standout Abby Santos had 11 points apiece.

THE BUILDUP of the teams from Cebu for the upcoming tournament of the merged Liga Pilipinas-Philippine Basketball League dubbed as the “Tournament of the Philippines” comes to a hilt today as the two-time Liga champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos take on the Mandaue Landmasters in an exhibition game at 6 pm at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The Niños of multi-titled head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba grabbed the headlines in the last conference of Liga as they rode a 21-game winning streak all the way to the championship.

Save for guard Woodrow Enriquez, who has been sidelined by an injury, their roster has remained intact with the core of Bruce Dacia, Stephen Padilla, Abby Santos, Marlon Basco, Ariel Mepaña, Mark Magsumbol, Mark Ababon, Hafer Mondragon, Nat Cruz, and Franklin Nailon returning to the fold.

The Niños have also added veteran guard Warren Ybanez and Fil-Am wingman Shawn Weinstein, who they got from the Rookie Draft.

The Landmasters of owner Joe Soberano and head coach Al Solis on the other hand, are in the final stages of assembling a lean and mean crew. Though the roster has not been finalized, donning the jerseys of Mandaue for tonight's game are Jet Latonio, Alano Caputolan, Rino Berami, Michael Luga, Ronald Bucao, Chris Victor Diputado and Ritchum Dennison and Eric Zanoria.

They will be joined by sweet-shooting big man John Villaver, a native of Talisay and formerly of the Laguna Stallions and former Far Eastern University center Jay-R Gerilla.

Cebu Niños rout Mandaue in exhibition
    Monday, June 7, 2010
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

FIL-AM Shawn Weinstein showed glimpses of what he can deliver for the Cebu City Niños as the multi-titled team routed Mandaue Cebu Landmasters, 82-66, during a friendly game at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex last Saturday.

Weinstein only had 11 points but his presence on the court helped lead to the easy win.

Mandaue was able to put up a good show in the first 10 minutes but the superiority of the Niños slowly took its toll against the newly formed Landmasters.

James Laygo showed he still has the form that made him one of the most feared players in the early 2000s as he scored a game-high 16 for the Landmasters.

Marlon Basco and Abby Santos scored 13 points each for the Niños.

    Tuesday, June 15, 2010

By Frank C. Calapre and Rommel C. Manlosa

WITH just a week before plunging into war, the Mandaue-Cebu Landmasters head coach Al Solis revealed his line-up of former collegiate and veteran cagers that will banner the team in the PBL-Liga Pilipinas joint tournament—the Tournament of the Philippines (TOP)—set next week in San Pablo Laguna.

Former FEU Tamaraw JR Gerilla, former Laguna Stallion Jan Villaver, ex-University of the Visayas Green Lancer Rino Berami and former USJ-R center Manny Gabas, with veteran bangers Alano Caputolan and Bernie Ursal will be powering the team’s frontline.

For the wing and backcourt positions, Solis enlisted veteran quarterback Ronaldo Bucao and fresh graduate Chris Diputado.

The shooting guard and wingmen on the other hand, are veteran shooters Jett Latonio, James Laygo and rookies Ritchum Dennison and Eric Zanoria.

Solis admitted he is still shopping for two more big men.

“The line-up not yet completed. There are two more slots available and I reserved that for big men.”

The team is among the six teams coming from the Liga Pilipinas side to wage war against the PBL teams in the TOP First Conference.

Meanwhile, the second leg opens today in General Santos City with boxing icon Manny Pacquiao leading the PacMan Gen-San Warriors in the team’s campaign as it faces the Treston Laguna in the 7:30 p.m. offering.

Pacquiao will get the support of former PBL stalwarts Marvin Yambao and center Erian Daja.
