    Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III

I'm just curious, is Liga Pilipinas classified as Pro League? or Amateur?

Who are the players eligible here? Are current UAAP and NCAA players allowed to play here?

    >What is the composition of the teams?
    >Liga Pilipinas basketball teams will be composed of a total of fourteen (14) players with at least eight (8 ) home->grown talents, a maximum of two (2) ex-pros and one fil-foreigner.

I've read that Sam Ekwe has played in Liga? Did Liga change the rules for Ekwe to play? or other foreigners are also allowed here?

Hope to some clarifications. Thanks and more power.

Liga Pilipinas is an amateur basketball league sanctioned and supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Current UAAP and NCAA players are allowed to play as long as they have met the requirements of their college leagues as regards to how many seasons have to be spent before a player may play in a commercial league (one for NCAA, two for UAAP) and for as long as the games are not in conflict with the college league's schedule.

However, because of Liga's format that entails a lot of travel, it is unwise for a student-athlete to be away from the classroom for extended periods of time.

When Samuel Ekwe exhausted his varsity eligibility, he sought to play in Liga. Because of that, the league made a ruling that any full-blooded foreigner who saw action for at least three seasons in any SBP-sanctioned college league may play in Liga. To be fair, he was subjected to a weighted lottery which was won by the Trace-Laguna Stallions.

This precedent sets the stage for the entry in the future of the likes of Sudan Daniel of San Beda, Kirk Long and Vince Burke of Ateneo, Marko Batricevic and Ferdinand of La Salle and the slew of Africans who have been enrolled in local schools.

    Yayoy to lead PBL/Liga All-Stars
    Wednesday, September 30, 2009

MLKP Cebu Niños coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba will shift his coaching acumen to higher gear as he has been tapped to call the shots for the Liga Pilipinas-Philippine Basketball League (PBL) selection in a fund-raising match this Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Liga Pilipinas-PBL hardcourt warriors will go up against the UAAP/NCAA All-Stars at 5 p.m., right before the exciting showdown between the Smart-Gilas Philippine squad and the Powerade Team Pilipinas at 7 pm.

Proceeds of the twin charity games will be donated to the victims of tropical storm “Ondoy” that triggered massive flooding in Metro Manila and outlying Luzon provinces.

“Through the blessings of Pilipinas Basketball, we are participating in this event for a good cause,” said Alcoseba.

Alcoseba will bring along with him to Manila two of his star players in Ariel Mepaña and Mark Jonas Ababon, who were handpicked to suit up for Liga Pilinas/PBL. (PR)

Yayoy on charity games: It will be total entertainment
    Sunday, October 4, 2009
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

ALTHOUGH it is just a “friendly game” to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, the players involved are in for one tough fight.

The Liga Pilipinas and PBL Selection will kick off the hostilities at 5 p.m. against the UAAP and NCAA selection. It will be followed by the much-anticipated battle between the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas Team and the Powerade RP-Team at 7 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum today.

The charity matches are organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, PBA, PBL, Liga Pilipinas, UAAP and NCAA.

“This is going to be total entertainment,” M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Alcoseba will call the shots for the Liga Pilipinas/PBL squad, which will have Ariel Mepaña and Mark Ababon of the Cebu Niños.

“I don’t know the other players, especially the players from the PBL. But we will have a practice game at 2 p.m. I hope I can quickly identify and pick the right combinations,” Alcoseba said.
