Local basketball is mourning the death of Jayson Nocom, a former member of the Jose Rizal U team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Burger King and Oracle in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

Nocom, who averaged six points and five rebounds in three seasons with the Bombers, died in in motorcycle accident in Lipa City early Monday morning, according to JRU assistant coach John Aquino.

The 6’4" Nocom reportedly visited his girlfriend in Lipa City and was on his way home riding in tandem on a motorcycle with a friend when the accident occurred between 12 to 1 am.

Nocom was riding at the back of the motorcycle and suffered fatal head injuries and died immediately, according to Aquino.

From Lipa City, Nocom's remains were brought to a funeral home in Laguna for autopsy and would be transferred late Monday to the Pacific Funeral in Kalentong, Mandaluyong City.

Nocom was 23 when the final buzzer sounded on him.

“We are saddened by the death of Jayson Nocom. NCAA will miss a player with determination and passion," said NCAA president and San Beda rector Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, in a statement.

“His stint with Burger King endeared him to those of us in San Beda, who got a chance to know him a little more closely. We discovered a very warm, courteous fellow with a healthy sense of humor. That was when rivalry ceased and friendship began," he added.

PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad, for his part, said that Nocom's sudden demise is a "big loss to the league."

"Our condolences to his family," said Trinidad.

JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia said the Heavy Bombers will offer their game on Wednesday against Mapua to the memory of their late schoolmate.

"We will dedicate our game to Jayson on Wednesday," said Vanguardia. – Perry Legaspi,

Our Condolences to the Nocom Family. May his soul rest in Peace.
    Go San Beda Fight!!!
