    NAASCU opens 9th season, welcomes OLFU

    The National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) began its ninth season last Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the cavernous Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay city with pomp and pageantry highlighting Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) Phoenix as the newest member-school in the league.

    During the program, Dr. Vicente O. Santos Jr., Medical Director and representative of the University in the event, was inducted as member of the sports association by Dr. Ricardo De Leon of Centro Escolar University. Dr. Remigia Nathanielsz, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Robert Bjorn O. Santos, Corporate Secretary, and Dr. Mary Anne Santos, Dean of the College of Physical Therapy � Quezon City Campus were also present during the opening program.

    Fatima University students dominated the crowd as the event started by welcoming Team Phoenix while the school�s cheering squad broke the silence of the crowd by performing energetic cheers and dances. The entrance of players followed with their respective muses and escorts as the students shouted for the names of their schools. The program was also highlighted with an inspiring doxology, the entrance of colors by the New Era University ROTC Cadets, and the National Anthem by the University of Makati Chorale.

    Dr. Ernesto Jay G. Adalem, President of the NAASCU, was ecstatic about the school performers and the impressive list of guests from the academe, the government, and the students themselves who composed the biggest delegation. With 13 teams in its fold, NAASCU led by the defending champion, San Sebastian College Recoletos-Cavite (SSCR), Dr. Adalem expects this season to be the most exciting and well�disciplined tournament. He also gave an inspirational message to the participating schools, �What�s best for students is youth development and I believe that�s what NAASCU is. Ito ang tunay na liga para sa tunay na tao�, he said. NAASCU Vice-President Dr. Ernesto Delos Santos introduced the keynote speaker, Senator Pia Cayetano, who is a former volleyball athlete and also an RP national team member. �I challenge students to pursue in sports because this gives them discipline,� she said. NAASCU Board of Directors awarded her a plaque of appreciation. Later on, Prof. Loreto Panganiban, Treasurer of NAASCU introduced the next speaker, Mr. Mike Barredo, who is the President of Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PhilSPADA), which is responsible for making athletes join the Paralympics. Prof. Jose Eviza introduced the guest of honor, Ms. Tina Bernabe Carbajal. They were both given plaques of appreciation. The program paused for a while for the intermission number of the University of Manila dancers.

    Early in the afternoon, the Board of Judges composed of Hon. C.P. Boogie Rodrigo, Chief Prosecutor of the Department of Justice in Caloocan and Hon. Ogie Echiverri, Businessman, school owner and a Local Government Unit (LGU) adviser, awarded the winners of Mr. And Ms. NAASCU from STI College and AMA Computer University, respectively. Also, Fr. Emilio Jaruda Jr., President of SSCR and Dr. Stephen Ba�ares of Informatics International College, awarded Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay with the most number of tickets sold. Finally, Dr. Adalem declared the formal opening of the ninth season of NAASCU.
