The knockout matches will be held on Monday with the winners advancing to the best-of-three title showdown.

Handled by coach Kerwin McCoy and schoolowner Alfonso Borda and led by veteran Jessie James Collado, the Sharks came through with the baskets that mattered most in the tensly-fought encounter to beat the Baycats and keep their hopes of rwaching the finals for the first time ever alive.

Collado, a 6-5 center with a big fighting heart, scattered four of his game-high 22 points in overtime to power the Subic-based Sharks to victory over the heavly-favored Baycats.

Rokie guard Vergel Baydo also rose to the occasion, hitting a huge three-point shot in the extra period.

Jhun Gracilla led SSC-Cavite with 22 points, followed by Kris Lucernas with 15 points and Lito Escobal with 11 points.

Lyceum’s win came after STI also kept its hope slaive with a surprise win over UM.

The Olympians controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish to beat the Hawks and force a rubber match for final slot.

Mac Macabasco fired 15 points for the Olympians, who need to beat the Hawks twice to enter the finals.

Rookies Martin Antonio and Gerald Bautista added 11 and 10 points, respectively..

Jay-Ar Manuel topscored for the Jojo Castillo-mentored Hawks with 14 points.

Alvin Viernes and Edwin Tamayo added 23 points between them.

    1 pm -- SSC-C vs UM

THERE will be San Sebastian College Cavite-University of Manila title showdown, after all.

Defending champion SSC-Cavite subdued Lyceum of Subic Bay, 90-81, while five-time titlist UM outsteadied former champion STI College, 72-68, to set up a title showdown in the 2009 National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) men’s basketball tournament at the Pasay Sports Complex.

The best-of-three title showdown will begin tomorrow at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Denied of the outright finals berths last Friday, the Baycats and the Hawks made sure there’s no stopping them this time.

“We’re very to be back in the finals and defend our title against UM,” said SSC-Cavite coach Edgar Macaraya.

Said UM coach Jojo Castillo: “We’ll be ready against them (Baycats). The team is looking forward to winning its sixth title in nine year sin the league.”

Jessie James Collado paced the Sharks with 20 points, followed by Billy Labadan and Richard Velasco with 14 point each.

Equally impressive were the Hawks, who relied on rookie guard Jeff Alvin Viernes to slam the door on the Olympians.

John Matubang, another prized recruit by team manager Atty. Ernesto de los Santos and consultant Rex Manansala, added 17 points for UM, which is seeking to win another title after a five-year reign from 2000-2005.

Maclean Sabellina topscored for the Olympians with 20 points, followed by Martin Antonio with 15, Norman Ihalas with 11 and Mac Macabasco with 10.

Re: The 2009 STI College Olympians

First congrats to Lyceum for beating Baste last sept 4, napakalakas ng lahat ng teams sa FInal Four. This is the first time in my memory that a #4 team beat the #1 team in the final four to forge a knock out.

Malakas ang baste pero they are beatable. Sayang at we didnt get the chance to meet them again.

My players are young and the core will be playing for another two years so hopefully we can improve next year.

STI College Olympians vs. Lyceum of SUbic Bay tomorrow - that is a very nice treat for the NAASCU fans.

    SSC-Cavite retains NAASCU title
    By: Ed Andaya
SAN Sebastian College-Cavite made it two years in a row by winning the title in the 2009 National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament.

SSC-Cavite brought down five-time titlist University of Manila, 98-91, in overtime to retain the title before another big crowd at the Cuneta Astrodome in Psay City.

The Edgar Macaraya-mentored Baycats went to Jhun Gracilla in the tensely-fought encounter and beat the Hawks for the second straight game in the scheduled best-of-three title series and become only the second team in league history since UM to retain the title.

Gracilla, who was also voted as most valuable player (MVP), scored six of his team-high 24 points in the extra period and powered the Baycats to a quick 92-83 lead from 83-all at the end of regulation.

Last year’s MVP Kris Lucernas added 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Jeri Basa contributed 15 points, including five in overtime, to complete the Baycats’ memorable campaign. Raymond Alcosebas and Lito Escobal added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“We’re very, very happy to win the title again. This is another major achievement for the team,” said Macaraya, who was also voted as the best coach in the tournament.

“But we could not have done it for two straight years without the support of the school management and all our supporters, so we dedicate this victory to them," added Macaraya, who steered the Baycats to their first title over the STI Olympians last year.

NAASCU president Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem of St. Clare College (Caloocan) and NAASCU honorary chairman Atty. Ernesto de los Santos of UM awarded the trophy to SSC-Cavite president Fr. Emilio Jaruda during the brief awarding ceremony.

Gracilla and Lucernas were later named in the mythical team, along with UM’s John Matubang, STI’s Gerald Bautista and Lyceum’s Jessie James Collado. Jeff Alvin Viernes of UM was chosen as rookie of the year.

Overall, the Cavite City-based Baycats finished with a 20-2 win-loss record, including 17-1 in the double-round eliminations. They lost only to Lyceum of Subic Bay in the eliminations and to STI College in the crossover semifinals.

It was a big disappointment for UM, which was hoping to add the seniors title to the junior and women titles it earlier won and complete a rare grand slam.

UM won both the junior and women’s crowns earlier this month.

Gene Roland Tumapat, who both piloted the Hawklets and Hawkettes to the crown, was named coach of the year in both divisions.

Mark Vincent Garcia and Sweeely Morona of UM were named MVP in the junior and women’s divisions, respectively.

IR Ariel Bermeo was named Referee of the Year

Actually, the Baycats had a chance to win the game outright but Viernes nailed two pressure-packed free throws to tie the score at 83-all with 43 seconds.

Both SSC-Cavite and UM missed their final shots to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Baycats went on a 9-0 run triggered by Gracilla to take a commanding 92-83 lead which they never relinquished.

Matubang tried to keep the Hawks alive, hitting back-to-back three-point shots for 89-92 with still 1:10 left. But Gracila, Lucernas and Lyle Antipuesto scored a basket each to settle the outcome of the match, 98-89 with 15 second left.

Viernes finished with 35 points for the Hawks of coach Jojo Castillo and consultant Rex Manansala.

    Matubang added 27 markers.

    The scores

    SSC-C (9 -- Gracilla 24, Lucernas 22, Basa 15, Ray. Alcosebas 12, Escobal 10, Antipuesto 9, Pantonia 4, Acain 2, Filio 0, Pasagui 0, Ro.Alcosebas 0, Reyes 0, Atangan 0, Callado 0, Pono 0

    UM (91) -- Vienes 35, Matubang 27, Manuel 14, Rabalo 8, Tamayo 4, Delos Trinos 3, Ibay 0, Patricio 0, Basan 0, Macasaet 0, Sanguyo 0, Fr.Jacob 0, Fe.Jacob 0, Mallada 0.

    Quarterscores: 17-20, 40-37, 70-58, 83-all, 98-91.
