INFORMATICS International College continued its winning way by beating Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay, 78-67, even as defending cahmpion San Sebastian College-Cavite won by forfeiture over Our Lady of Fatima Univerity in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament at the SSC-Cavite gym in Cavite City.
Leonard Azotea, Juan Antonio Asinas and Mark Montuano scored in double figures for the Icons of coach Jonathan Reyes.
Azotea finished with 13 points, Asinas added 12 and Montuano contributed 10 for the Icons, who kept a share of the lead with SSC-Cavite with five straight wins.
Jimmy Delgado finished with 16 points for the Eagles, who dropped to 1-4.
Five-time champion University of Manila rode on the hot hands of John Mtubang to subdue STI College, 73-62.
The Hawks, who are now being handled by coach Jojo Castillo and consultant Rex Manansala, got 24 point from Matubang to beat the Olympians and improve to 4-1.
In other games, AMA Computer University nipped St. Clare Colllege-Caloocan, 70-66, and Centro Escolar University humbled University of Makati, 83-66.
Earlier, SSC-Cavite was declared winner by forfeiture when Fatima brought the wrong set of uniform.
The game was later played for the sake of the students with SC-Cavite winning the match just the same.
In the lone junior division, SSC-Cavite defeated CEU, 52-48.

Naascu hoops: UM Hawks prevail in 2 overtimes

MANILA, Philippines – Rookie guard John Matubang extended the game then added more clutch baskets to lead University of Manila to a double overtime 94-87 victory over AMA Computer University yesterday in the National Athletics Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Naascu) men’s basketball tournament at the New Era Gym here.
The 6-foot-3 guard sank the first of two free throws off a foul from Sander Salvador in the final 2.5 seconds of the fourth quarter to forge overtime, 71-all, after an exhausting game-long catch-up job by the Hawks.
Then he added six of his game-high 25 points in the next two overtime periods to help the Hawks snatch their fifth victory in six games. The Titans dropped to 3-4.
The victory kept UM in second place behind Informatics, which notched a seventh straight triumph at the expense of Centro Escolar, 69-67.
The Scorpions absorbed their third loss in six games.
Six-foot shooter Mario Leonida topscored for the Icons with 15 points most of them in the fourth quarter where they mounted a huge rally to overcome a 46-57 third-quarter deficit and ensure the win.
Lyceum of Subic Bay leaned on 6-foot-4 shooting guard Jessie James Collado to down STI, 82-78, while Our Lady of Fatima University (3-3) claimed its third win by routing winless University of Makati (0-7), 65-53.
Collado fired 25 points for the Sharks, who improved to 3-2.

STI Olympians bring down Informatics

Defending champion San Sebastian College-Cavite stayed unbeaten even as STI brought Informatics back to earth in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Naascu) men's basketball tournament yesterday.
The SSC Baycats humbled the St. Clare College-Caloocan Saints, 78-48, and raised their unbeaten streak to six in a late game Saturday at the NEU gym.
The STI Olympians inflicted a first loss on the Informatics Icons, 79-45, after limiting their rivals to only seven points in the third period behind a full-court press.
The Olympians improved to 5-2 while the Icons dropped to 7-1.

The Lyceum of Subic Bay Sharks defeated the New Era Hunters yesterday, 78-75, at the UM Gym. Therefore, the Hunters (3-7) are eliminated from the tournament regardless of the outcome of their game this Sunday against the STI Olympians (7-3).Originally Posted by Joescoundrel
The Olympians have to win order to force a three-way tie at 8-3 for Third to Fifth Place with Informatics and Lyceum. That being said, STI holds the superior FIBA Quotient of 1.236, followed by Lyceum (1.000) and Informatics (0.836). A loss will keep them at Fifth Place and Informatics and Lyceum getting Third and Fourth Place. Informatics beat Lyceum in Round One, 72-68.
The FIBA Quotient uses only the scores of the games of the teams involved against each other. Total points scored are divided by the total score of their opponents. The final rankings will be used to determine the schedule for Round Two beginning this coming Monday morning (August 17) at the Pasay City Sports Complex.
NAASCU: Informatics, STI keep hopes alive
INFORMATICS International Colleges humbled AMA Computer University, 83-75, while STI Colleges edged Lyceum of Subic Bay, 57-55, in a pair of crucial matches in the battle for the remaining two semis berths in the 9th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) men’s basketball tournament at the Pasay Sports Complex.
Mario Leonida and two other mainstays scored in double figures for the Jonathan Reyes-mentored Icons, who clinched their 12th win in 17 matches for solo third place behind defending champion San Sebastian College-Cavite and five-time winner University of Manila.
Leonida finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Vincent Jabagat added 15 points and Mark Anthony Limpat contributed 13 points for Informatics, which is making only their second year in the league.
Dennis Maravilla and Abdel Mbomiko finished with 15 points apiece for the Titans, whio formally bowed out of contention with 6-11 win-loss mark.
The Olympians of coach Vic Ycasiano leaned on the troika of Norman Ihalas, Virgilio Carino and Mac Macabasco in the last minute to stun the Sharks, and tie their victim at 11-6 card for the fourth spot.
STI and Lyceum will try to win their final-day assignments against Informatics and AMACU, respectively, on Wednesday to force a triple tie with the Icons to decide who will enter the No. 3 and No. 4 spot in the cross-over semifinals on Friday.
Ihalas scored 13 points and Carino had 12.
Jessie James Collado led the Sharks with 14 points.

LYCEUM OF SUBIC BAY AND STI barged into the Final Four with resounding victories over their respective rivals yesterday in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Naascu) men’s basketball tournament at the UM Gym.
LSB banked on a fourth-quarter scoring binge by Richard Velasco to down Informatics, 74-62, while STI blasted AMA Computer, 66-54.
Waiting for the winners in the semifinals starting tomorrow at the San Juan gym are league-leaders San Sebastian College-Recoletos of Cavite and six-time champion University of Manila, who both enjoy twice-to-beat incentives.
LSB takes on SSC-R Cavite at 2:30 p.m. after the 1 p.m. clash between STI and UM.

FORMER champion STI Colleges crushed arch-rival AMA Computer University, 66-54, to enter the ‘Final Four’ for fifth straight year, even as Lyceum of Subic Bay ousted Informatics International Colleges, 74-62, in the 9th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) men's basketball tournament at the UM gym in Gastambide, Manila.
Handled by coach Vic Ycasiano, the Olympians received another huge game from veteran guard Norman Ihalas to beat the Titans and clinch the No. 3 spot in the crossover semifinals in this 12-team double-round tournament organized by NAASCU president Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem.
Ihalas scattered 20 points for the Olympians, who closed out their elimination round campaign with a 12-6 win-loss card and earned the right to face five-time titlist University of Manila in the crossover semifinals at 1 p.m. today.
MacLean Sabellina, Mac Macabsaco and Martin Antonio contributed eight points apiece for STI, which need to beat UM twice to reach the finals.
But the Hawks of coach Jojo Castillo, consultant Rex Manansala and manager Atty. Ernesto de los Santos, have already beaten the Olympians twice during the eliminations, 73-62 and 72-58.
Sander Salvador carried the fight for the Titans with 14 points.
The Sharks of coach Kerwin McCoy and manager Alfornso Borda leaned on Jessie James Collado, Jayson Espenelli and Richard Velasco to slam tne door on the Icons.
Collado, a 6-4 slotman, finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Espenelli added 11 points for the Olongapo City-based squad.
Lyceum will battle defending champion San Sebastian College-Cavite in the crossover semifinals with the Baycats enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Icons were led by Mark Montuano with 20 points, Kenneth Santos with 14 points and Mark Limpat with 13 points.
Actually, STI, Lyceum and Informatics finished with similar 12-6 slates, but the Olympians and the Sharks advance to the next round due to higher quotient scores.
STI had a plus 30 points for the No. 3 spot and Lyceum had a plus 10 for No. 4 spot. Informatics got a negative 44 points to fail to reach the final four.
