Slow-starting Ateneo rallies to beat UE, 72-57
07/16/2009 | 08:12 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo showed championship poise Thursday overcoming a slow start to post a 72-57 win over University of the East in the 72nd UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
The team at the start can’t figure out how to defend against a team that shoots from anywhere. Or sometimes at your face
– Norman Black, Ateneo coach
“We started slow," said Ateneo coach Norman Black, who is aiming to steer the Blue Eagles to their second straight title.
Rabeh Al-Hussaini led Ateneo’s comeback to help the Katipunan-based squad to their second straight win to tie University of Santo Tomas, which earlier coasted to a 104-89 triumph over National University, on top of the standings.
Black said Ateneo was not used to playing against a team that plays open basketball. UE’s running-game surprised Black and his Eagles as the Red Warriors enjoyed a 28-11 lead early in the second quarter.
“The team at the start can’t figure out how to defend against a team that shoots from anywhere. Or sometimes at your face," said Black.
“And because of that, we have a problem in our transition defense. “It was our tendency to gamble a bit."
But once the Blue Eagles got their bearing, Ateneo slowly pulled away.
Still down 45-41 in the third quarter, Al-Hussani scored nine of his 11 third quarter points to lead a 13-0 Ateneo attack as the Blue Eagles built a 54-45 heading into the final period.
Emman Monfort and Raymond Austria nailed consecutive three-pointers at the start of the fourth to push the Eagles’ lead to 14, 62-48.
The Ateneo defense also limited UE’s production to just two points in a four-minute span. The Warriors never recovered from there and scored their last six points from the free throw line.
“Pinupuwersa ko ang mga shots ko, ganoon din ang mga teammates ko sa start ng laban," said Al-Hussaini “But coach told us to take our time."
“Nung nakuha na namin ang galaw ng UE, naging madali na sa amin," added Baclao, who finished with 11 rebounds and three assists.
Val Acuña, who led the Warriors in the first half with 19 points, could only muster two points in the third quarter and was held scoreless in the final period.
UE’s 17 turnovers also failed to help the Warriors’ cause. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

You have already shown your true potentials in the PBL so relax!
GO UE FIGHT FOR VICTORY!
I think Paul Lee is too pressured to deliver in the UAAP ever since becoming one of the best players in the semi-pro league.. I can see it in his game, gigil na gigil to make a shot, up to the point na pinipilit na. I appreciate his willingness to take the lead though.. He should let the game come to him..
Paul Lee is becoming just another Bonbon Custodio. Masyadong dino dominate ang bola. He wants to have the ball all the time such that his moves have become predictable and the defense naturally collapses on him. Whatever contribution he makes offensively is negated by his turnovers.
The Warriors have to play as a team.

UE gets back on track, routs NU
By Alder T. Almo
19 July 2009 04:59 PM
Manila – The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors got back on track with a methodical 73-59 rout of the National University (NU) Bulldogs during Sunday’s action in 72nd University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Philsports Arena.
Pari Llagas poured in nine of his team-high 16 points in a mighty third quarter run by the Red Warriors.
UE controlled the boards, 46-34, to fuel its run-and-gun game. The Red Warriors scored 24 points on fastbreak to run away with their second win in three outings.
Coming off a tough loss to defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles in their last game, the Warriors started slow this time.
The Bulldogs ran to a 10-2 start and led 14-5 when the Warriors came back to their senses.
Val Acuna and Llagas led a 10-2 run to stage UE’s comeback.
UE star Paul Lee, who shot miserably against the Blue Eagles, scattered six points in the second period as the Warriors grabbed the lead for good, 36-31, at the turn.
“I told the boys to stay focus and forget our loss (to Ateneo). We gave up easy points early in the game and we can’t play like this against the tougher opponents,” UE rookie mentor Lawrence Chongson said.
Lee bounced back from a seven-turnover performance against the Blue Eagles with a superb all-around game this time. The third year shooting guard chipped in 14 points that went with six boards and seven assists against only two turnovers.
Three more Warriors scored in double figures. Acuna and Rudy Lingganay had 12 apiece while Elmer Espiritu got away with 11 points.
Melvin Baloran led the Bulldogs, who absorbed their second straight loss, with 19 points,
The scores:
UE 73 – Llagas 16, Lee 14, Lingganay 12, Acuna 12, Espiritu 11, Reyes 4, Zamar 2, Duran 2, Tagarda 0, Acibar 0.
NU 59 – Baloran 19, Ponferrada 11, Hermosisima 11, Malanday 8, Singh 5, Cabaluna 5, Terso 0, Manito 0, Magat 0, Luy 0, Batac 0.
Quarters: 15-18, 36-31, 61-47, 73-59.
