I find it surprising to see Garrick Ayala's name in the line up. A former Red Cub, the kid has the height and the heft to mix it up at this level, but not the skills. Not yet. He wasn't even a dominant player at the NCAA Jrs last season and I doubt if the intervening period was enough to hone up his skills.

Kung mababangko lang siya, mabuti pa magpahinog na lang siya sa Team B, in the same manner Paul Lee improved himself and was an instant part of the core when he was elevated in the line up in his second year in college.

All the while I was hoping for Ryan Monteclaro, a PG and a Red Cub too, to be included in the line up after the injury to Martinez.

Ewan ko anong kamote ang nakain ng coaching staff at inaakala nilang they have enough point guards to make things happen for them.
We had a head start in this game. At one time we had a glorious 3rd place finish in the World Championship and was the undisputed power in Asia. But the world has learned how to play it. They may not be as good as us,but they have enough smarts to make use of their height. That is enough to beat us.

Ayala is more of a C/PF than SF. Goodluck to him.

looking at he line up, it looks like they (coaching staff) are planning to use the shooting guards (Lee, Zamar, Bandaying, Tangarda) to play point (dual roles). actually, we only have 2 legit PG's in Lingganay, and Reyes. they really need the support of the others.

Bakit yung mga games ni Ayala last season and off season sa San Beda Red Cubs, palagi sya isa sa mga top scorer, pati rebound bumabanat din ang batang ito. Hilaw pa rin ba o medyo hinog na sa UAAP?

UE gives old coach rude UAAP welcome
    07/11/2009 | 08:24 PM

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East Coach Lawrence Chongson described their 65-46 blowout victory over De La Salle University on Saturday as “inspiring and motivating."

But Chongson does not want to dwell on the win at the Big Dome that saw the Warriors limiting the Green Archers to its lowest output since La Salle’s 70-52 loss to Far Eastern University on Aug. 14, 2004.

“A win does not make a tournament," said Chongson, who won his maiden game in the UAAP at the expense former UE mentor Dindo Pumaren, who now serves as an assistant to his brother and La Salle head coach Franz.

Chongson, however, revealed that he consciously tried to isolate the team from anything regarding the death of former University of the East’s long-time representative to the UAAP board Rolando “Brenn" Perez, who passed away Friday night after suffering from a heart attack.

“I apologize," said Chongson. “There was so much at stake. It was our first game and against DLSU at that."

Chongson’s decision to isolate his players regarding Perez’ death served the squad well as the Warriors were ahead all throughout the match and even turned a 43-35 lead at the start of the fourth period to a 63-41 advantage in the last three minutes.

“I really don’t know what happened to La Salle. We merely played our game and I’m even surprised about the outcome,’ said Chongson regarding one of the much favored teams in the tournament.

“But they brought out the best in us," Chongson added.

“It (the win) is inspiring and motivating but we will not dwell on it because we have more battles to win," Chongson added. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

    Scores:
    UE 65 – Llagas 15, Lee 11, Zamar 9, Espiritu 9, LIngganay 6, Reyes 5, Acuna 4, Ayala 2, Alabanza 2, Acibar 2, Tagarda 0.

    DLSU 46– Mangahas 9, Marata 7, Barua 7, Webb 5, Malabes 5, Villanueva 4, Ferdinand 3, Tolentino 2, Co 2, Bringas 2, Bagatsing 0, Atkins 0, Andrada 0.

    Quarter scores: 9-10; 3024; 43-35; 65-46.
