Condolences to the family of the late Tanny Gonzales. Aside from being a well respected sportsman, Tanny is also a long-time barangay chairman in his home village in Sta. Ana Manila; greatly respected and loved. A great guy all around and he will surely be missed by a lot of people.
2011 Fr Martin Cup Open opening weekend schedules already posted in the new Fr Martin Cup Open thread, please visit the Fr Martin Cup Forum for details, I think both the Pirates and the Lady Pirates are taking part in this conference.
MANILA — After a surprising quarterfinals stint in the D-League, Bread Story’s Cinderella run came to a halt after it fell victim to a vengeful CafeFrance squad. 81-68 in the quarterfinals.
For head coach Bonnie Tan, there’s always a silver lining to every story, such as being the first rookie team to actually make the playoffs in the tournament.
“It was a good run, not the ending that we wanted. Dito na nagtatapos ang story ng Bread Story,” said Tan.
But it wasn’t only Bread Story’s story that will be ending, it also marks the end of Tan’s story with Lyceum, a team he handled for 11 years.
After announcing his retirement last October from the school, Tan’s last tour of duty with the Pirates is with the same Bread Story squad composed mostly of his Lyceum players. More so than the painstaking loss, it is his separation with the boys and the institution that he handled which affects him the most.
“Malungkot siyempre. After 11 years, talagang I cannot explain yung feeling,” he said. “Mixed feelings kasi nga last game na namin magsasama, hindi maganda yung pagkatalo, at the same time last game namin.”
But despite that, he opted to dwell on the positives and assured his players that this is not the last time that they will cross paths.
“Kanina sa dugout, instead of malungkot, sinabihan ko lang sila na ang basketball iikot lang ng iikot yan. Magkikita naman kami at magsasama pa kami,” he concluded. — Rivals 2015
New Lyceum coach Topex Robinson starts practice this week
by Angelo Falcon on February 2, 2015
MANILA — After months of speculation, it is finally confirmed that coach Topex Robinson will be taking over the coaching duties in Lyceum from longtime head coach Bonnie Tan.
It was none other than Tan who confirmed the rumors surrounding the former San Sebastian coach and added that Robinson will be starting practice with the team this week.
“I wish him all the best,” Tan said.
Under Robinson, the Stags have been a constant Final Four team, missing only the semis last year when they finished with an atrocious 6-12 record.
But despite that, Tan is confident that Robinson will be successful with the Pirates.
“Di natin masabi (yung performance) pero sa tingin ko may experience naman siya,” he said. “Tingin ko okay naman si Topex at di niya pababayaan yung team.”
Tan added he’s pretty hopeful about Lyceum’s chances of being a regular member in the NCAA, as this year marks the end of the school’s probationary status and their membership will now be on the NCAA policy board’s hands.
“Before I left Lyceum, I’m positive na yung probationary stage which is four years, nameet namin and naaccomplish namin,” he said. “We’re not that high sa standing pero we’re not that low naman. Hopefully nakapagbayad na ng tuition fee yung Lyceum sa NC and sana matanggap sila as regular member next season.”
“On the basketball part, sa tingin ko nagawa namin yung mga dapat gawin ng probationary team sa NCAA,” he added. – Rivals 2015
