USJ-R ESCAPES USC
Sacred Heart School-Jesuits emerges victorious
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News
If last night's game was any indication of the matches to come in the brand new season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), then Cebu is in for an explosive treat.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars edged the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 67-66, in an exciting seniors division game at the Cebu Coliseum.
Versatile big man Edwin Bibera came up with the game-winning basket as his putback with 2.8 seconds remaining in the tightly-contested match proved to be the difference.
Bibera, who had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, had the most important sequence of the game as he grabbed the offensive rebound off the misses of Marvin Duran and Kurt Amores and scored that basked that sealed the game.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Warriors, who rallied late in the game and appeared poised to win the game after they took a three-point lead behind a three-point play from Giovanni Padillo with two minutes left.
However, a crucial jumpshot from Amores cut the lead down to one which then set up Bibera's heroics. The Warriors had the chance to win the game but Mike Cantonao's three-point attempt fell short.
In the first game, the debut of the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Eagles was a triumphant one as they defeated the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 94-86, in the juniors division.
Jed Rama scored a whopping 31 points while Jerry Seno added 21.
Eaglets triumph in return to CESAFI
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 02, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The comebacking Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Eaglets returned after an absence of over a decade to eke out a 94-86 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Bay Panthers yesterday in the opening of the 9th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Eaglets, who returned to the league for the first time since they played in the CAAA 13 ago, came into the game with their triple towers in 6-3 Chris Porter, 6-3 Julius Cadavis and 6-1 Jed Rama, son of former vice-governor Enrique Rama.
Among the three, Rama, a mobile big man, did the most damage. He scored 31 points to lead the Eaglets to the win column.
Porter added 16 points.
A smaller player, however, made the plays for the Eaglets when the Baby Panthers threatened in the third period.
Albert Seno together with other guards like Adven Jess Diputado, brother of UV’s Christ Victor Diputado made heady plays to help preserve the win, when the Baby Panthers tried to trap in the third quarter.
The Panthers were just a bucket from tying the score, in the final quarter, but then Seno and Diputado responded.
When asked if his team will make it all the way to the semifinals, Coach Ramil Rasmo said, “We’ll try. We are a very young team and we have nothing to lose.”
Rasmo credited his team’s performance to their preparations including stints in Passarelle tournaments in the city.
As of press time at 8:30 last night, last year’s runner-up University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars are still playing against former third placer University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in the lone collegiate game.
The scores:
SHS (94) — Rama 31, Seno 21, Porter 16, Bacaltos 12, Branzuela 5, Diputado 4, Dinsay 2, Abbu 1
USPF (86) — Rosales 16, Pitogo 12, Arong 11, Diapera 11, Baguio 9, Corcilles 7, Salazar 7, Silao 4, Miñoza 3, Lambujon 2. (THE FREEMAN)
Panthers outhustle Greywolves in OT
By Marian C. Baring
Sun Star Daily - Cebu
THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF)opened their bid in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) on a strong note after surviving the Don Bosco College (DBC) Greywolves in overtime, 88-83, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was a game of mental toughness decided by who could stand the pressure. And in the end, it was the Panthers who stood their ground.
Both teams took turns taking the lead the entire game before DBC Greywolves’s Alain delos Santos leveled the game at 78 with a triple in the final six seconds.
In the extra period, the Greywolves crumbled to pressure, had costly turnovers and fired unsure shots that got them in trouble.
Ceslo Colegado, whose 16 points in the fourth period kept DBC’s heads above water, Jefford Aldave and Jayson Cabrilles also fouled out, dampening the spirits of DBC.
DBC also gave up unnecessary fouls, allowing USPF to score 11 of their 13 points in overtime from the free throw line.
The match was also Nuevo-Demo Filoteo’s coming out party as he paced USPF’s victory with his 27 points—15 in the fourth period.
Ellison Rivera and Fritz Dajalos, who combined for 24 points, were the only two other players who scored in double digits for USPF.
Colegado, who scored 16 points in the fourth period, topped the DBC scorers with 24. Delos Santos added 17, while Joey Lucky Juntilla and Aldave added 10 each.
In the juniors divison, defending champion University of Cebu (UC) defeated the University of San Carlos (USC), 95-86, while the University of the Visayas routed DBC, 93-61.
Last Saturday, the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) Eagles soared high in their return to the high school division with an emphatic win over USPF, 98-86, in the league opener.
The Eagles banked on a strong start to make their presence felt in the league as they built a 10-point lead, 29-19, in the first period.
SHS-J’s fiery start was powered by Joseph Gerard Rama, who scored nine points in the first period.
Rama led the SHS-J scorers with 31 points, while Jerry Jan Seno added 21.
USP-F Baby Panthers retaliated in the second period and actually snatched the lead, 38-36, but SHS-J was quick to react and answered with an 8-0 run.
That run was spiked by a triple from Kristoffer Porter at the buzzer and the Eagles entered the final half with a 44-38 lead.
This was SHS-J’s first game in the Cesafi and already they showed the teamwork of a squad that has played together for a long time.

CESAFI 2009
It’s CESAFI season once again as Cebu Basketball eagerly welcomed the biggest basketball show in town at yesterday’s opening ceremonies. And just like all previous editions of the basketball tournament, the biggest question being asked this year is if the UV Lancers can bag a ninth straight CESAFI championship.
The Lancers may find themselves in their most vulnerable state, but they’re still the eight-time defending champions and will have to be toppled down from their thrones. Lurking on the prowl with better chances of defeating UV are UC, SWU, USC and USJR (not in any order). They all have better chances of scoring an “upset” as compared to 2008. But then again, the Lancers will come out prepared to defend their turf and aren’t willing to let go of their crown just yet.
The Lancers will still be the team to beat even with the departure of Von Harry Lanete and the injured Harlowe Villanil. MVP Greg Slaughter is back for his third tour of duty and fans are itching to see how much improvement he has made since he joined the Smart Gilas Philippine national training pool of the SBP. We’ll be looking if he can up his 2008 averages of 19.1 points, 9 rebounds, 3.2 blocks a game and 51% field goal shooting. The Lancers, however will not be a mere all-Slaughter show. Their backcourt rotation is solid, and expect break-out seasons from UV’s future leader Harold Cincoflores and Chris Diputado (9.9 ppg, 6.7 apg combined). Ritchum Dennison (11.4 ppg) will still be the same tough offguard and if he can be consistent, Phil Mercader will also contribute better this year.
UC 2009 will feature the blooming of June Mar Fajardo. He was a one-man wrecking crew for UC last year, averaging 20.4 points, 13.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks a game. He led the league in statistical points during the elimination round last year, and will do it again this year, hoping to add the playoffs and finals stats to this feat. We’re going to see an even better version of Fajardo who must now take the leadership role for the squad. But since a team can’t rely on one man alone, UC’s veterans in new recruit Moncrief Rogado (12 ppg), Kevin Quilantang (11.2 ppg) and Jansenn Abella (14.1 ppg) will be needed to provide the much needed support. A key player missing from this year’s squad is Fil-Am Edward Pao who was good for 13 points and 9 boards a game. There are two new Fil-Ams on the squad, and everyone is curious to see if they can match the impact of Pao-Quilantang Fil-am rookie duo of last year.
SWU finds itself in a curious situation with the absence of Alfred Belande and Clefford Maguate who were good for 28 points a game combined. The challenge is to have people step up to make up for this sudden vacuum. Arrd Dianggo (9.5 ppg, 5.4 apg) will continue with his leadership role at the point guard sport, while the flashy Eliud Poligrates (8.3 ppg) is expected to mature and contribute more productively (and not be a showboating Globetrotter). Eleazar Armecin and Cris Litorja (8.3 ppg) are expected to share the scoring load with the two wily guards. An edge that SWU enjoys over the other top five teams is that they have enough warm bodies to fill up the power forward and center spots, something one needs to match up against UV and UC. Rene Pacquiao and Ritchie Jalandoni may not be called on to score, but they’ll be welcome presence for interior defense.
The scouting report on USC will reveal that they’re actually a complete team from positions 1 to 3 or 4, but also happen to be a doughnut squad. Joven Cid Cortes (10.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg) will have to repeat his role as an undersized “big man” while his veteran wingmen will have to make a big impact to make it a balanced in-out attack. The combined experience of Giovanni Padillo (11.9 ppg), Sam Hermosa (9.9 ppg), June Cantonao (7.6 ppg) and the comebacking Carlo Padayao should make them a tough set of 2-3 players, and this should give defenses spread-out problems. The Paul Joven/Jabe Bautista rotation at point guard (10 apg combined) also gives the Warriors a solid backcourt/wingmen set-up. But the crucial “missing” link that they’ll have to address will be their lack of size and height. Expect USC to rely a lot on team defense to cover the post and gang rebounding to secure the ball.
When you lose the makers of 62 points a game, there’s only one thing to do: start all over again. This is USJR’s major task for 2009. The Gudez-Malinao-Ponce-Gabas-Justiniani-Delfino-Pogoy gang was good for a combined 62 points a game, and they simply can’t be replaced just like that. Big man Kurt Amores literally has some big shoes to fill, while the rest of the team must step up. The Jaguars will surely come out pressing all game-long like they did last year and will look for a lot of points in transition. As to who else will cover the 62 point vacuum is a tough question to answer since no other player on the squad has solid crunchtime and game experience. The one distinct factor about the Jaguars is that Coach Itoy Salacut always finds ways to get the best out of his players and make them look good. His teams are always in great shape with his role players stepping up when needed to do so. How much Coach Itoy can squeeze out of his team is what we should be looking out for.
I’m afraid the battle for CESAFI supremacy will be limited to these five teams. In the end, we’ll see a classic UV-UC championship series, with USC playing the role of the darkhorse. One thing is clear. UV is still the eight-time champion, and someone still has to knock them off their seat.
