    NIKE SUMMER LEAGUE 2009

Only one summer basketball tournament plays every day in true hardcore fashion and that's the Nike Summer League.

A senior and junior division featuring over 20 schools and 25 teams will be on tap for the 2009 edition.

Ateneo De Manila and San Sebastian Recoletos won the senior and junior divisions last year and are looking to make it back-to-back title reigns this year. The Blue Eagles were saved by Chris Tiu's last-second shot to nip the UE Red Warriors while the Golden Staglets ran all over Lasalle Greenhills behind Arvie Bringas and Raffy Gusi.

Here's a little something from our archives...

Ateneo De Manila leaned on the end-game heroics of team captain Chris Tiu to nip the UE Red Warriors 65-64, bagging the Nike Summer League 2008 title.

UE played near-perfect basketball for over 39 minutes. In the last 34 seconds of play though they suddenly forgot how to fight through staggered screens as Tiu came off two screens then nailed a picture-perfect jumpshot from the top of the key, the ball ripping through the nylons with still 26 seconds left.

In the ensuing play the Warriors had two chances to pull out the victory but just could not buy a basket: Paul Lee had a shot back-rim and Hans Thiele bungled a point-blank shot. UE still had the ball with just 2 seconds remaining but the ball just wouldn't go in for the Warriors. Tiu rebounded the last UE miss as time expired to complete his save of Ateneo. "That was really the play. Even if he doesn't make all his shots you can't leave him open with the game on the line," said coach Norman Black of Tiu's game-saving shot.

Eric Salamat was declared the MVP after the game. Joining him in the Mythical 5 were UE's Pari Llagas, Lasalle forwards Rico Maeirhofer and PJ Barua, and FEU pointguard Mark "Babyface" Barroca. In the opening game FEU bagged third place after beating the undermanned Green Archers.

The Adamson Lady Falcons took home the title in the women’s division after beating the Lady Tamaraws of FEU, while Arvie Bringas led his San Sebastian Staglets over Lasalle Greenhills to bag the junior division crown.

Last summer the UE Red Warriors played two title games in two days and nearly became a double summer champion. Maybe this year will finally be their year.

Not unless FEU has something to do about it.

^^^ Agree. With a solid veteran core, and a couple of talented newcomers, and maybe two returnees, Far Eastern should make the most noise in the Nike.

    Re: NIKE SUMMER LEAGUE 2009

Dapat pahiyang na ang UE from these pre-season events. If they have to participate, do so just to keep in shape and not necessarily win.

We had a head start in this game. At one time we had a glorious 3rd place finish in the World Championship and was the undisputed power in Asia. But the world has learned how to play it. They may not be as good as us,but they have enough smarts to make use of their height. That is enough to beat us.

Mas OK din para surprise pag sila nagchampion sa UAAP. I think FEU have the greatest chance of winning the NSL. Saka, sa kanila ata ang homecourt ;D

    Re: NIKE SUMMER LEAGUE 2009

^^^ Tournament organizers are looking either at April 17 or 18 for opening day, over at the Far Eastern Gym in R Papa in Manila.

Just to add to the FEU-UE buzz: while that is indeed the FEU homecourt, it is not within the main FEU campus and it is right outside the Lepanto gate of UE, heh-he-he! So I guess the FEU-UE game should be a doozy.

FEU will have Aldrech Ramos, Reil Cervantes, JR Cawaling, Paul Sanga, Andy Barroca and Jenz Knuttel as their veteran core. They will definitely have Pipo Nuondoo, Glenn Eguiloz and RR Garcia as well-practiced newcomers. They might have Sonny Abaring and Jun Vinluan back. They might also include that other pointguard who came from MMC, Manalo I think is his surname. All of these guys have been practicing together everyday for the last year and a half to two years, and they are on the FMC Open lineup of FEU that went undefeated and are now in the Finals.

On the other hand there is UE, who to my knowledge, still does not have any recruit of stature, but who will instead rely on holdovers and kids who have been on their sidelines for the last year or two. James Martinez, Paul Lee and Pari Llagas are the only sure holdovers at the moment, although the likes of Hans Thiele, Elmer Espiritu, Rudy Linganay, Paul Zamar, Raffy Reyes, Toto Bandaying and Lucas Tagarda might all still make the Nike lineup.

On paper at least, no way can UE beat FEU man for man. And with Coach Glen Capacio, no way newbie coach Lawrence Chongson can pull a rabbit out of any hat.

Thanks Sam. Any idea when can we possibly have the list of participating teams?
