Far Eastern University finally got a big monkey off its collective backs by winning their first ever Fr Martin Cup championship over tough San Sebastian College 81 - 70.

Playing in front of a highly animated crowd at the San Beda gymnasium, the Tamaraws got an early lead thanks to PBL veterans Mark Barroca and JR Cawaling. But the Stags came charging right back to seize the lead 17-16 at the end of the first period on a layup by forward Mark Bringas.

Starting in the second period though, it was an all-FEU show as Barroca, Cawaling, Riel Cervantes and Pipo Nuondoo all worked the backdoor and cross-screen plays to put the Tamaraws ahead at 41-31 at the lemon time break.

That lead ballooned to as much as 53-36 midway through the third period as new Coach Ato Agustin looked bamboozled by the size and athleticism of FEU.

In the payoff fourth period, the Tamaraws went on a full charge to make it 59-38 and were never seriously threatened. San Sebastian came within 59-47 midway through the quarter but just didn't have enough to complete the comeback. Jimbo Aquino, the Stags' top scorer, went a sorry 3-13 from the field, and it seemed only Bringas came to play.

Barroca led all scorers with 24 points to go with his seven rebounds and seven assists, while former RP Youth Team standout Ryan Roose Garcia had 18 including going 4-6 from trey range.

Bringas had 14 points and 11 rebounds for San Sebastian but got little help from the rest of his teammates.
Joe, can you describe Noundoo's game -- position, height, body type. Thanks

Guardian, Pipo Nuondoo is about 6'4" and maybe 215 pounds, very muscular and lean, typical African you might say, like a smaller Sam Ekwe, very good muscle mass and definition. He plays the 4 as far as the FEU scheme of things goes, and often sets up on left box where he uses his strength to back down his man and either get a straight basket or a turnaround or a semi-hook. He gets some rebounds but he does not necessarily run down every carom, just secures everything that comes in his general direction. He can also pass a little, although once he gets the ball he apparently has the license to take a shot or create. You may remember Nuondoo as the guy that Nonoy Baclao blocked face-up twice in the last Fil Oil tournament.

Moving back to the topic, Untamed would that be IAN Sangalang formerly of the RP Youth team? I thought, and now going back to FEU, he was a Tamaraw in waiting? Wrong hoofed and horned mammal on my part I guess...

Stags triumph in Filoil tourney (summary)

SQUADS that made waves for their off-season recruits made the biggest splashes in the 2009 Filoil Flying V Manny V. Pangilinan Cup last April 24, 2009 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

San Sebastian College-Recoletos pulled off a debut win against National University, 70-66. The Stags, now mentored by former PBA star Ato Agustin, were led by veteran Jimbo Aquino, who jumpstarted his squad by netting nine of his 17 points in the first quarter. Their biggest lead stood at 12, 26-14, at the end of the opening 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs, however, bit back through an 8-0 run midway in the final period to trim the Stags’ lead to three, 65-62, with under two minutes in the ballgame. However, it wasn’t enough to lift the Sampaloc quintet over the hump.

Mark Bringas chipped in with 14 points for the NCAA squad while Elmer Fabula paced the Bulldogs with 13.

    San Sebastian 70 – Aquino 17, Bringas 14, Bulawan 9, Abueva 8, Semira 6, del Rio 5, Raymundo 4, Najorda 3, Gatchalian 2, Gusi 2, Gatchalian 0, Maconocido 0, Sangalang 0, Pascual 0, Bartolo 0.

    NU 66 – Fabula 13, Cabaluna 8, Hermosisima 7, Batac 7, Tungcul 6, Ponferrada 6, Roy 6, Terso 5, Donahue 4, Manito 4, Singh 0, Luy 0, Calma 0, Magat 0.

    Quarter scores: 26-14, 40-36, 58-47, 70-66
