Game today: (Lyceum gym)
6 p.m. -- Ocean Fresh-Lyceum vs. UST-Dickies
FORWARD Taguig used its vast experience to bring down PJS Law Firm, 98-79, and make it two in a row in the 2010 MBL Invitational basketball tournament at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong City.
Former Purefoods mainstay Boyet Bautista scattered a game-high 16 points to lead the Travel House-supported Taguig to its second straight win in this two- month tournament sponsored by Smart Communications, Dickies Underwear and PRC Couriers.
Bautista, who played for Purefoods in 2006, wisely orchestrated Taguig’s offensive game right from the opening buzzer to establish several double-digit leads which they never relinquished.
Harold Sta. Cruz also stood out with 14 points for Taguig, which is being handled by coach Benito “Bing” Victoria and consultant Danny Gavierrez.
Lou Gatumbato contributed 12 points and Billy Moody and Eric de la Cuesta had 10 points apiece for the veteran-laden team of Taguig Mayor Fredde Tiñga and managers Juanito San Pedro and Francisco Edriga.
Derreck Hubalde, son of PBA legend Freddie Hubalde, carried the fight for PJS with 15 points, followed by Kim Gandarosa with 13 points and Hermes Sumalinog with 12.
The tournament resumes today with defending champion Lyceum-Showa and University of Santo Tomas battling each other in a rematch of last year’s title showdown.
Game time is 6 p.m. with both Lyceum and UST seeking their first win after losing their initial assignments to Taguig and Foscon Ship Management, respectively.
MBL commissioner Loreto “Ato” Tolentino said the top two teams after the elimination round will advance to the semifinals outright with twice-to-beat incentive.
The next four teams will then dispute the remaining semis berths in a pair of knockout matches, with the No. 3 team battling the No. 6 squad and the no. 4 team facing the No. 5 squad.
Tournament director is Albert Andaya.
