    Re: Quezon Red Oilers

LUCENA CITY – The host and third seed Quezon Red Oilers claimed the third of five seats in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Super Leg as they made short work of the visiting eight seed MP Warriors of GenSan, 86-64, in their Wild Card Round encounter Wednesday at the Quezon Convention Center.

The Red Oilers of Gov. Rafael P. Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi raced to an 18-7 lead after the first period as playmaker Roberts Labagala set up Jorel Canizares and Luis Palaganas for easy scores and never looked back. The story was the same in the second period as the Warriors continued to struggle, allowing the Red Oilers to pull away further, 38-17.

Guard Christian Gavina then completed a three-point play that erected the Red Oilers’ biggest advantage of the game, 68-37, late in the third stanza. From there, the Red Oilers coasted to the win. The Warriors of Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido had hoped to win in order to force a winner-take-all game for a ticket to the Super Leg set for November 22 to 29 in Cebu City and sponsored by Smart, Molten, Accel, Calcium-Cee, Gatorade, Air 21 and Burlington and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Center Erik Suguitan led all scorers with 12 points, 10 coming in the second half. Labagala followed with 11 points and 10 assists. Balong Ramos topped the Warriors with 11 markers, all coming in the fourth period. Jonjon Gonzaga added nine points.

The Wild Card Round continues Saturday with the reigning National Champions and fourth seed Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Noel beginning the formal defense of their crown against the visiting seventh seed Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan at the Arturo S. Lugod Memorial Sports and Cultural Center in Gingoog City.

The remaining Wild Card pairing has fifth seed Forward Taguig hosting sixth seed Trace-Laguna Stallions on November 17 at the C. P. Tinga Memorial Hall. Already qualified for the Super Leg are the top two squad of the Tour Phase, the undefeated M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos and the Smart-Pampanga Buddies.

The entire Liga Super Leg and Playoffs will be shown next week on Solar Sports. Liga Pilipinas Classics air daily on Viva Prime Channel. For more details, log on to www.ligapilipinas.net.
