Moving on to the game, Lyceum University survived a late game surge by Mike Cabangon to edge STI College 88-86 in the first day of the Metro Manila wild card of the PCCL. STI displayed awesome shooting and crisp ball movement to go up by as much as 14 points midway through the third period and looked headed to a smooth win. The Olympians were playing uninspired ball and were getting beaten on basic plays because of their failure to switch and recover on defense.
Cabangon however came alive in the fourth quarter as he strung up eight points in the last two and a half minutes. He nearly sent the game into overtime as he got his third steal in the last minute with still three seconds to go. He fumbled the ball however and time ran out on STI.
Lyceum got quite a break when the table officials failed to sound the buzzer on an expired shotclock with time down to around two minutes. STI coach Vic Icasiano was livid as was the rest of his coaching staff. Lyceum put in a shot when the clock had clearly run out and the referee counted the shot. It was then 84-80 and STI was mounting that furious rally behind Cabangon.
