WHEN the University of the East went recruiting in Cebu, many thought the prized catch would be Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. Juniors MVP Nike Montalvo. In this game however, it was his Cebu Eastern College teammate, 16-year-old BJ Zosa, who stole the show.

The diminutive point guard’s fiery outside touch, along with clutch play from veteran Paul Zamar, lifted the Red Warriors to a shock 82-79 victory over the Mapúa Institute of Technology in the 2011 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan last May 25.

Zamar had a game-high of 24 markers, shooting a steady 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Zosa rifled in 17, including five triples, and former Letran Squire Roi Sumang added 11 points and three swipes. “Every day, it’s a new key player,” said UE head coach Jerry Codiñera, who gave 15 Red Warriors at least six minutes of playing time each.

Mapúa built a 41-37 halftime lead with Rodel Ranises canning three triples to end the half. The former San Beda juniors cager actually scored all of his 11 points in the second quarter.

The fourth placers in last season’s NCAA tournament then extended the lead to double-digits, 55-45 with an incomplete and-one play and a triple, all by Jonathan Banal with 2:44 left in the third. Zamar and Zosa were there to bail UE out though, unleashing an 8-0 blast capped off by back-to-back Zosa treys to cut the lead to just a deuce, 55-53, entering the fourth.

In the payoff period, a triple by Zamar on the very first play of the quarter gave UE the lead, 56-55. After a jumper by Allan Mangahas swung things back in favor of Mapúa, UE exploded for 10 unanswered to go up 66-57.

With the game on the line, Josan Nimes triggered one final Mapúa run, getting the Cardinals to within five, 79-74, with 35.3 seconds left on back-to-back baskets. After forcing a travel, Yousef Taha missed a triple and Ranises flubbed the putback, forcing the Cardinals to foul. JM Noble split his charities with 21.8 secs to hike the UE lead to 80-74, leaving the door slightly open for the Cards. A Kenneth Ighalo offensive rebound and putback made it a four-point game, and pressure defense forced a bad pass by Sumang, keeping Mapúa in it. Nimes hit a triple to trim the deficit to 80-79, but there were just 1.1 seconds left. Zosa made sure nothing crazy happened with an insurance jumper to peg the final score.

Mangahas finished with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while also dishing out five dimes and forcing two steals. Nimes added 14, while Taha finished with his tournament-low, just six points and six blocks.

The win allowed UE to close out their campaign on a high note as it finished 4-4 in Group B. The Red Warriors will qualify as the fourth-seeded squad from the group should Mapúa lose at least one of its two remaining games. They are at 3-3 and face must-win situations against Emilio Aguinaldo College and University of the Philippines.

“We just want to have a decent showing in every tournament we participate in,” Codiñera said.

The Cardinals fell despite a 16 to 4 second chance point differential, triggered by a nine offensive rebound edge. W5

The scores:

UE 82 – Zamar 24, Zosa 17, Sumang 11, Enguio 7, Duran 6, Noble 5, Casajeros 4, Montelibano 3, Flores 2, Javier 2, Santos 1, Sumido 0, Razon 0, Tagarda 0, Montalvo 0

Mapúa 79 – Mangahas 20, Nimes 14, Ranises 11, Parala 8, Taha 6, Banal 6, Ighalo 6, Pascual 4, Sarangay 2, Maniego 2, Stevens 0, Cantos 0, Abad 0

Re: Red Warriors in the Off-Season
