    PABL/PBL Facts,Trivia,Records

Here are some trivias about the premier amateur league in the 80s the PABL, which starting 1990 was renamed PBL.

    Did you know that,,,,

-In 1986, Magnolia captured the PABL Founders cup title without a single loss in the tournament, the team was bannered by allan caidic, elmer reyes and the core of the fabled NCC, they beat ESQ marketing, led by their former teammate Hector Calma, 3-0 in the finals. that the Purefoods team debut in Philippine basketball on that same tourney.

-Allan Caidic also holds the record for the most number of three point shots converted in the PABL with 15 triples while playing for Magnolia in 1986, he previously hit 12 triples broken by Ed Macaraya with 14.

-In the 1987 Int. Invitationals, the PABL with chairman Joey Concepcion of RFM, allowed the semifinal teams to get players from teams eliminated to be competiive against the guest foreign squads, his team, Swift benefited from getting players like Jojo Lastimosa and Nelson Asaytono, which led to the franchise first PABL title, beating the Alvin Patrimonio-led Yco shinemasters via 2 game sweep, somehow Swift's rival Purefoods stand firm not to beef up its lineup and paid dearly for it in the semis.

    - there has been so many brawls, rumbles in Philippine basketball but for old timers, the match between the Swift-USA all stars and PABL-Philips has to go down as the worst ever basketbrawl, from what I recall the game was never finished after our locals (the '87 national team) rallied and were up by four 83-79 with less than two minutes left. an american player somewhat elbowed benjie paras on the neck which triggered and empty both benches.

    - In 1990, from PABL to PBL, under then commissioner Andy Jao, the PBL begin serving as the farm league of the PBA, the use of 4 Quarters, 40 minutes instead of two halves, and thus eliminating the one on one and the right to waive during the penalty situation, one classic change Jao used which never happened in any basketball tourney was the first to score 7 points in the extension period, instead of a 5 minute overtime period. the PBL also began playing with imports starting that year.

triple-doubles are extremely rare in the PBL. Only a handful of players have achieved this feat: Asi Taulava, Jerome Ejercito, and, surprise, surprise: Tonichi Pinzon!

there was this PBL game that went 5 vs 4! it happen in a free for all match between RC Cola and Sta.Lucia. the ugly incident happen in the 3rd.Qrt with RC Cola enjoying a 59-50 lead. It started when Oscar Cabrera and PBA draftee Melchor Teves went after each other after a shoving match. Players from both sides left their benches and joined the fracas. Benny Cheng of RC Cola was knock out cold by Sta.Lucia's Arman Llagas. 14 players were thrown out of the ballgame for their participation in the brawl and for leaving their respective benches. includes SLR players Llagas, Castelo, Teves, Delos Reyes and RC's Cheng, Genesis Sasuman and Noli Banate.
Play resumed after 30 minutes of deliberation by the PBL Officials, and RC Cola was left with only 4 players, who put up a gallant stand against the Realtors. In the end, Sta.Lucia went on to win 77-70.

It is Armoni Llagas. He played for the San Sebastian Stags in the NCAA. The coach of Sta. Lucia then was former San Beda coach Orly Castelo. Orly's two sons also played on that Sta. Lucia team, Pons and Merwin.
