Baguio-Benguet college wars begin on Saturday
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

THE region's premiere colleges and universities face off in various sports categories when the Baguio-Benguet Athletic Educational League (BBEAL) opens on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) gym.

The University of the Philippines (UP) is hosting the event.

Seven events will be played during the first semester featuring basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, sepak takraw, table tennis and archery.

Cordillera Career Development College Admirals will have its handful against eight other schools in defending its basketball men's crown, which they snatched last year in an epic three-game contest dethroning perennial champion, the University of Baguio (UB) Cardinals.

In women's basketball, the Saint Louis University (SLU) Lions will defend the crown it won last year after the UB lost in the third game via default.

Meanwhile, the UC Jaguars will defend its volleyball crown in both men's and women's categories.

"The women's volleyball team is intact despite the graduation of five players but my first six who saw action last year are intact," Jaguars athletic director and volleyball women coach Yul Banosa said.

However, Banosa said the men's volleyball team will have difficulty since only seven of his players will return in this year's edition of BBEAL including four of his six starters who recently graduated.

The Jaguar athletic director also said the badminton team poses a problem after his two players failed to enroll this semester leaving Winston Calugay and Gary Pagaduan at the helm.

UC is the team to beat in men's badminton while the Cardinals will try to retain the women's championship.

Banosa said he has high hopes for the table tennis team that bagged the men's championship in the same league and the archery team, which won in the men's division with SLU salvaging the women's crown.

UC, SLU, UB win in BBEAL opener
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

THE city’s top three schools trounced their respective rivals to win in the men's basketball during the opening of the Baguio Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) at the jam-packed University of the Cordilleras Gym Saturday afternoon.

Haynes Acdong led the UC Jaguars in manhandling the PMA cadets to notch their first win in a lopsided 83–68 victory.

"I told the boys to play good in their defense and not to let their guards down because basketball is played in four quarters," Jaguars coach Florentino Luna in a post game interview.

Acdong and fellow Jaguars John Paul Jularbal and Jeremy Balagot lead a 16–0 spurt in the second quarter to put the cadets at bay with a 14-point lead at the end of the first half.

PMA proved to be a tough nut to crack when Karl Winston Cacanindin, Ronald Retulla, and Kendrich PIA scoring three triples to cut the deficit by 10 with 7:45 left in the third period.

But Acdong cannot be denied the win playing in his final year as a Jaguar scoring six consecutive points in the third quarter to put UC up by 12, 57–45 with 4:31 left in the third quarter.

PMA's Pia, with a hot hand in the three point arch, then unleashed a triple at the end of the quarter with UC up by 14 entering the final period.

PMA despite their high shooting percentage in the three point territory was unable to clamp down on Acdong inside the paint in the payoff period denying the cadets of their first win the 2008 edition of the BBEAL.

The jaguars put away the game against the cadets in the remaining four minutes of the ball game leading by 22 points, 74 -52.

In other games, powerhouse University of Baguio also pulled a win in the men's basketball against Pines City Colleges (PCC), 92-62.

Saint Louis University meanwhile nipped host UP Fighting Maroons, 76–41 to join UC and UB in the win column of the men's basketball.

In women's basketball, PCC notched their first win against UP, 57-23.

Meanwhile, early winners UC and UB will clash anew on Sunday, at 4 p.m., at the UB gym in the main game of the BBEAL basketball men.

UB will try to redeem itself to take an early 2–0 win-loss record after bowing to Cordillera Career Development College in an epic three game battle.

Jaguars nips Cardinals in overtime in Bbeal games
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

THE University of the Cordillera (UC) Jaguars relied on the heroics of Carlo Domingo in overtime to steal a win against the University of Baguio (UB) Cardinals in the ongoing Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (Bbeal), 94-92 Sunday evening to remain unscathed in the tournament.
Haynes Acdong bulldozed his way to a game-high 27 points to lead the Jaguars in regulation but failed to score a single point in the overtime.

Domingo filled the gap left by Acdong to score all eight of his 10 points to pull the Gov. Pack-based dribblers to score their second win against no defeat to join Saint Louis University and the Cordillera Career Development College.

The Cardinals now put themselves into fourth place suffering a heartbreaking loss in their home turf despite the heroics of Kenneth Ighalo, James Rodolfa and the sweet shooting of Miguel Elefante.

"I forced my game out because I had a hard time doing it for the team, so when overtime came, that's where I poured out my game," Domingo said after the game.

The Cardinals seemed to have perfected their mastery against the Jaguars with their timely three-point baskets but UC made a fourth quarter surge which put the game into overtime after being down by seven with 2:08 left in the fourth period.

Acdong then scored two successive lay-ups followed by a short stab in the paint by Domingo to put the Jaguars within one, 78 -79, 1:22 left in regulation.

The Jaguars then had a chance to win the ballgame in regulation period but UC's John Paul Juralbal was called for an offensive foul with ten seconds left.

UB was on its way to handling the Jaguars their first defeat after nailing only one shot in their two free throws to lead by two, 78-80, with 7.2 ticks left in clock.

Acdong then grabbed a rebound after the miss, setting up a streaking Domingo to put the game into overtime. Domingo then scored his last eight points on overtime to give the Jaguars their second win.

The Jaguars then rallied to a 12-5 run on overtime to put the Cardinals at bay, 92-85, with two minutes left.

In other games, the Saint Louis Lions walloped the Baguio Central University Eagles to a commanding 58-44 win to notch their 2-0 win-loss record.

The Lions limited the hapless Eagles to only two points in the first quarter to seal a lopsided victory during the Sunday games at the UB gymnasium.

Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) Admirals meanwhile drubbed Benguet State University to also seal their second win in the tournament against no defeat last Sunday.

The Admirals are facing the University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio Fighting Maroons at the CCDC Gym as of press time Monday.

    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

FOUR teams will battle it out when play resumes in the ongoing Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) basketball-men at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) on Wednesday.

The UC Jaguars will try to keep its winning ways as it guns for its third consecutive win when it faces Benguet State University (BSU) at 4:30 p.m.

The Jaguars will rely on its main man Haynes Acdong who is playing in his last year in the league together with James Carlos Domingo who led the team against rival school University of Baguio (UB) in overtime to secure their second win against no defeat.

UC relied on the heroics of Carlo Domingo in overtime to steal a win against UB, 94-92 Sunday evening.

Acdong bulldozed his way to a game-high 27 points to lead the Jaguars while Domingo scored 10 of his 14 points in overtime to lead UC.

The Trinidad-based BSU meanwhile will try to improve its record in men's basketball following a loss against neighboring Cordillera Career Development College in the opening game last Sunday.

In the three-curtain raiser, cellar dwellers Pines City Colleges (PCC) and University of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio will try to score a win in a battle of the underdogs also at the University of the Cordilleras.

PCC absorbed a 92-62 defeat against the University of Baguio during Bbeal's opening games while UP-Baguio proved to be no match against Saint Louis University, 76-41 also during the league's opening game.

Jaguars rips BSU for 3rd win; UP notches 1st win vs PCC
    www.sunstar.com.ph

THE University of the Cordilleras (UC) Jaguars extended their winning streak to three after downing Benguet State University (BSU), 91-63, in the men's basketball division of the Baguio Benguet Educational Athletic League (Bbeal) at the UC Gymnasium Wednesday afternoon.

After trailing by four early in the first quarter, the Jaguars turned the tables around to lead by one, 10-9 with 6:27 left in the first period.

Jaguar Jesse Tomlin led a 21-1-run late in the first quarter to wrest the lead at the end of the first quarter, 31-10, after Haynes Acdong was forced to sit it out having two personal fouls.

The win put the Jaguars on top with idle defending champion Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) on having three games won with no defeat.

The Jaguars limited BSU to only 12 points in the second quarter with the sweet-shooting Daryl Poblete scoring nine points in the second period mostly beyond the three point arc which put the game away against the visiting BSU, 49-22, at the end of the first half.

Four Jaguars scored in double-digit led by Acdong with his game-high 26 points despite sitting the rest of the first period, with Tomlin chipping in 15 points. Jaguar point guard John Carlos Domingo, who is also playing in his last year as a Jaguar, and Poblete contributed 11 a piece to pace the winning team.

BSU was led by Aaron Calimlim's 19 points with Eric Diccion tallying 17 to suffer their second defeat against a win they stole from the Pines City Colleges (PCC).

In the other game, University of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio barged into the win column after defeating PCC, 87-70, handling them their third loss in the annual meet.

UP led by 18 at the end of the first half, 44-26, but PCC then pushed its limit in the second half but rather fell short as it bowed to the steadier play of the Fighting Maroons.

Meanwhile, the CCDC Admirals were facing the Baguio Central University (UC) while the University of Baguio (UB) Cardinals were battling the Philippine Military Academy (OMA) at the UC as of press time Thursday. (R.Osis)

Warriors bows down vs Admirals in Bbeal action
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

DESPITE the absence of its leading scorer Harold Sabado, Cordillera Career Development College handed the Pines City Colleges (PCC) Warriors their fourth defeat in the ongoing men's basketball of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) on Sunday, 78-56, at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Gym.

Sabado was in civilian clothes cheering for the Admirals during the second half of the game but Coach Gerry Estrangero said he just let him change his clothes for some of his bench players to experience the game and give them time to mature as players.

"I just had to let him change after the second half because I wanted all players to have their playing time and mature as players and have the experience as we progress in the league," Estrangero said.

The PCC Warriors looked poised to steal a game and handed the defending champion their second consecutive defeat after leading by four, midway in the third period 41-37.

The Admirals, after a shocking loss against the Saint Louis University (SLU) Navigators last Saturday made sure the Warriors lead was a fluke after catapulting a 10-4 run at the end of the third quarter to lead by two, 47-45.

PCC pushed their game one notch higher in the fourth quarter after scoring five consecutive unanswered points to once again grab the lead by three, 50-47 with 7:43 left in the payoff period proving that they are not the league's whipping team.

"I told my players, no matter how weak the opponents may be, they shouldn't be complacent," returning coach Estrangero said after having a stint with the then BCF Shields (now UC Jaguars) in early 2000 and led the team to two final appearances in the men's basketball division of BBEAL.

The Admirals, having championship experience, slowly regained their composure and scored 11 unanswered points to finally put the game away 58-50 with 4:31 left in the fourth period.

"I think it is an eye-opener for us not to let our guards down because we almost collapsed in the third and fourth period because our team tried to relax," Estrangero said.

He added that they were surprised by the SLU team upsetting a supposed to be perfect season for the Admirals, which paraded the same lineup when it won the men's basketball championship against the University of Baguio (UB) last year.

As of this writing Monday, SLU was testing the waters against the UC Jaguars.

Navigators hand Jaguars first loss in Bbeal
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

COOLER heads prevailed when an almost free-for-all was about to ensue between both teams top scorer, as the Saint Louis University (SLU) Navigators remained unbeaten after four games handling the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Jaguars their first defeat in five outings 65-55 in the ongoing men's basketball of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (Bbeal) at the jampacked UC gymnasium Monday afternoon.

Playing in their green and blue uniforms, it was a familiar sight for UAAP fans over Manila, having a touch of Baguio-based school as both universities cheered for their own schools, with the Jaguars donning their famous white and green uniform while the Navigators were wearing their famous blue and white jerseys.

Powered by their cheering squad, the Jaguars cruised to an early three-point lead at the opening buzzer courtesy of sweet shooting Jessie Tomlin.

But the Navigators, coming from a big win against the defending champion Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) Admirals, found their rhythm to regain the lead and never looked back on the short stabs inside paint of Glen Torio and Carlo Orduña's to lead 12-6 with 6:42 left in the opening period.
And the Navigators made sure Jaguars' superstar Haynes Acdong and ace point guard John Carlos Domingo's numbers would be limited.

    They did.

Acdong was limited to only 11 points, far from his 20-performance during their first four games where they ended up winners, including a win against the University of Baguio (UB) Cardinals, also a past champion in the annual meet.

Domingo, probably the most prolific point guard in the tournament, meanwhile was boxed in with only two points in the entire game on two free throws, with the SLU clamping him on defense.

The Navigators almost made the Jaguars look like varsity players whose basketball talent was left in their locker room, upending every run by UC as they dominated the end of the first half, 39-30.

SLU's Torio, Orduña, Joel Jimenez, and Alvin Simon Bustos then teamed up to erect a 13-point lead with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter while the Jaguars continued to miss their spot inside the hardwood with no answer from Acdong and Domingo.

Acdong almost carried the Jaguars on his shoulders to lead a late third-period surge trimming the lead by eight with 2:11 left in the third period after a Navigator foul earning him a three-point play in the action. Orduña then unleashed a three to regain a double-digit lead 52-42 with 1:35 left in the quarter.

With UC still down by eight in the payoff period, Jaguar Daryll Poblete then scored a three, cutting the lead to five erupting the interest of the Jaguars cheering squad, chanting UC Jaguars.

Domingo, who remained scoreless in the game took a rebound after a miss from the Navigators, pushed for the ball towards their court but was later fouled by Navigator John Ray Fernandez. Both teams were already in the penalty with 7:00 minutes remaining in the final period.

Domingo scored his first, and was his two points in the ballgame in the free throw area, to narrow the Navigator's lead to three, 52-49.

In the ensuing play, Poblete then stole the ball from SLU's Ramil Alimba who was later fouled. Poblete scored one of his two free throws and put the Jaguars within two, 52-50, 6:36 left in the ballgame.

SLU then called for a timeout, set up a play with Torio finishing an easy lay up to once again increase the lead to four, 54-50, 60 20 left in the clock.

Scores remained unchanged in almost two minutes of play when Poblete again scored an easy two from a Domino assist to put the Jaguars within two, 54-52, 4:30 left in the ballgame.

Orduña then answered a short stab inside the paint to once again increase the Navigator lead to four, 56-52, 3:51 left.

Acdong, whose team was almost at the losing end, took a loose ball after a miss from the arc by Tomlin, was fouled by Torio. Torio stretched his belly causing Acdong to be outbalanced causing a bad fall.

Acdong then threw a ball against Torio's face, which almost caused a melee inside the gymnasium, but cooler heads prevailed to stop an almost free for all with 2:01 left in the ballgame.

Both teams were given two technical fouls for the almost fracas with both Acdong and Torio missing one of their two free throws, with the Navigators enjoying a four-point lead, 58-54 in the fourth period.

Torio eventually fouled out with 1:25 left in the ballgame, but the game was already settled in favor of SLU by that time.

Orduña paced the Navigators with his game-high 18 points performance followed Torio's 17-point output. Jimenez and Bustos also chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Jaguars was led by Tomlin's 12-point output, with Acdong contributing 11 points while John Paul Juralbal added seven points for the losing team.

Admirals, Jaguars rip rival in BBEAL games
    By Roderick Osis
    www.sunstar.com.ph

CORDILLERA Career Development College (CCDC) Admirals and University of the Cordilleras (UC) Jaguars scored one-sided games against separate foes in the ongoing Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) late Monday afternoon.

The Jaguars, minus Haynes Acdong, proved too much for the winless Pines City Colleges Warriors, 96-49, to secure their seventh win in eight outings which could land them a twice-to-beat advantage going into the semifinals.

Jaguar head coach Florentino Luna said Acdong was mugged by still unknown assailants Friday afternoon along North Drive. Acdong got two stitches in the nape, but Luna assured the injury would be healed in time for the quarterfinals.

After trailing by two in the early going of the first quarter, the Jaguars relied on Jessie Tomlin scoring 11 in the opening period to pull UC to a 10-7 lead. They never looked back since then, ending the first period with a commanding 32-15 lead.

Sandy Perdido, fresh from his clutch three-point shooting in their last outing against the Admirals, led the Jaguars with 15 points. Three other Jaguars scored in double figure, with Tomlin and John Carlos Domingo chipping in 14 a piece and Napoleon's 13 points performance.

The Warriors were led by Adrianne Andres's 12 points production and slotman Edward Bulatao's 10.

In the second game, the Admirals ripped Philippine Military Academy (PMA), 92-65, to notch their fifth win against two defeats at the UC gymnasium.

The Admirals, coming off a defeat against the Jaguars, took control of the ball game after erecting a 10-point lead with 2:19 left in the opening bell.

CCDC then posted a 16-point lead to seal off a 47-31 advantage at the end of the first half and a 24 points lead at the end of the third period with most of CCDC's scorers sitting in the bench.

Harold Sabado led the Admirals en route to a 16-point output with Arthur Advincula and Michael Balgua's 14. Kirk Tamiray, the Admirals starting point guard, added 11.

The Cadets were paced by Karl Winston Cacanindin's 15 points, while Kendrich Pia added 11.
