bernardo was nicknamed "the non-pareil" by then sportscaster willie hernandez. he was a member of the ysmael steel admirals which became champion for 6 consecutive years in the national open which was a very popular tournament in the 60s. he was one of the top scorers in the team which was made up of star players or national players like jun papa, jimmy mariano, big boy reynoso, manny jocson, boy arazas, orly bauzon, boy marquez, jake rojas. they matched the record of the then mighty yco painters in the late 50s then led by the legendary caloy loyzaga.
