Anthony, thanks for the correction, I get these things mixed up, good thing your prodigious basketball data bank is there to set us straight.

As for the still unfolding Orbeta case: the amounts referred to are staggering. That Orbeta would be involved in cons and scams and with such amounts shakes me to the core. How do these things get under the nose of league officials? For godsakes with those kinds of amounts I find it hard to believe there aren't some school and even league officials themselves involved somehow in these shenanigans.

How I wish the actual crime syndicates behind these operations would finally be caught and prosecuted.

I feel sorry for the young men who have such promising careers ahead of them have their lives ruined because of gambling problems exacerbated by criminals who take further advantage of them.

And if this is happening in a somewhat tony institution like St Benilde I can only imagine how much easier it would be to prey on players from less prosperous institutions and backgrounds. In these hard times it is very difficult for a kid trying to survive on a scholarship, biding his time to try and make his hoop dreams come true, to just say "No" to easy money.

The truly hard part of course is actually proving players are into such shenanigans. Orbeta's arrest was at least the result of a sting operation. Although the NBI, like all so-called law enforcement entities in these beautiful islands, does not exactly have the reputation of Caesar's wife, these are operations and cases for which the benefit of the doubt would generally be given. How about cases of alleged point-shaving? How does one tell the difference between a player deliberately throwing a game and simply having an off game?

    Benilde starts probe of Orbeta

Though the College of St. Benilde considers at this juncture that the alleged point-shaving case of its player Paolo Orbeta is an isolated case, its officials will still investigate the player and some members of its seniors basketball team to determine if others are involved.

Henry Atayde, the Blazers’ representative to the NCAA Management Committee, said he and other officials, including those from De La Salle, which is the mother school of St. Benilde, will meet with Orbeta and his parents today so Orbeta can explain the whole story.

"We want to know if other personalities, from players to coaches, were involved," Atayde told the Bulletin yesterday.

"These are all part of the investigation we’re doing. We’ll interview players, coaches if they know this type of behavior (illegal gambling) of Paolo. Is there such a thing as ‘player’s odds scheme’. We want to know," Atayde added.

The 24-year-old Orbeta was arrested in an entrapment by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents following a complaint by Wilfred Uy, who accused Orbeta and three others of threatening him.

As a result, the NBI charged Orbeta, James Ryan Mangaran, Rajan Chandumal and Police Inspector Aaron Raemon Abon Elago with coercion, threat, extortion and illegal gambling.

Orbeta, at present, as well as his three companions are out on a P2,000 bail each which was granted by the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO).

But NBI Anti-Fraud Computer crimes Division chief, Assistant Regional Director Vicente de Guzman III said that the NBI will request the MCPO to reconsider the granting of bail.

De Guzman added that the NBI learned that the charge of robbery with threat and intimidation was reduced by Manila Assistant Prosecutor Exequiel Sison to light threats and ruled that Orbeta and company be released for further investigation with regards to charges of illegal gambling.

The NBI official earlier said that they considered the case of Orbeta as a "breakthrough" as far as their probe on alleged game-fixing is concerned.

The NBI, as per the request of NCAA officials, had been monitoring the NCAA and other collegiate leagues the past two years but no arrests or cases have ever been filed against any individual or team.

De Guzman admitted that it is hard to point an accusing finger on any player for point shaving or at least not playing up to par, as they can easily say that they merely had an offnight but with the arrest of Orbeta, the NBI had hoped to gather more information regarding the prevalence of illegal gambling in sporting events.

"Malalim ito. Mahirap naman basta mag-akusa na lang. Kailangan talaga may insider na makapagbibigay ng impormasyon sa mga transaksyon nila (those involved in illegal gambling)," De Guzman said. —With report from Rizal Obanil

Anong malay natin, meron na ring tinitiktikan ang NBI na ibang mga student-athletes na gumagawa nito. Sayang ang ganitong mga opportunity na binibigay sa ibang mga bata sa ngayon. You get to play basketball plus scholarships kung swerte ka pa and the exposure that you need tapos sa ganito ka lang uuwi.

I was just surprised to see this one. P2000.00? Wow. For extortion, threat of bodily harm, etc. etc. etc. Kaya pala tuloy tuloy ang racket na ito. Even if you jump bail, it's just peanuts. Kung ganito lang yung bail, huwag niyo na ipag bail.

Back on Topic: IMHO, for now, let's just take the two investigations (FBI, CSB) take its course.
