5th Avenue Telecom whacks USPF in M.Lhuillier U-21 hoop
    Wednesday, September 17, 2008
    The Freeman

CEBU - The 5th Avenue Telecoms let loose a powerful endgame punch to clobber the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 88-71, in the resumption of the 6th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

The Telecoms of coach Marvin Felicis actually kicked off their offensive onslaught in the second canto where they shattered a 17-all standoff to storm the first half with a 39-30 advantage.

The Baby Panthers pulled within, 52-58, but the Telecoms staged a sizzling 30-19 rally in the windup to come up with a 17-point romp and stay unbeaten after two games in the two-month tilt organized by the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) through the efforts of its executive director and multi-titled coach Eddie B. Ybañez.

In the other game, Philweb overcame a spirited resistance by the University of the Visayas (UV)-Mandaue to eke out a hard-earned 73-70 victory.

Philweb enjoyed a big 40-29 lead at the bend, but UV-Mandaue, behind the efforts of Jeremy Espina, fought back with finesse to erase the deficit and even grab the upperhand, 69-68, with 1:28 left to play. Espina finished with a tournament-high 35 points.

In the ensuing sequence, Labata hit a crucial 3-pointer to put back Philweb in front, 71-69. UV-Mandaue threatened one more time, 70-71, but Te calmly sank a pair of free throws with 12 ticks left before the final buzzer to ice Philweb’s triumph.

UV-Mandaue had a chance to forge an overtime, but flubbed two attempts from beyond the arc as the gameclock expired. —EBV (THE FREEMAN)

Remember nips Ave Maria in M. Lhuillier U-21 hoop
    Saturday, September 20, 2008
    The Freeman

Team Remember dealt Ave Maria Sanctuary Park its first loss but had to pass through the wringer before pulling off an 82-81 squeaker in the 6th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Ave Maria was leading almost the entire game including at 67-58 after three quarters, but Remember of Consolacion Vice Mayor Ember V. Alinsug and Poblacion Oriental barangay councilor Paul Alelu Q. Flores crept back with savvy to forge an 80-all deadlock with 32 seconds left to play.

In the ensuing sequence, Abing was fouled but could only make one out of two free throws to put Ave Maria of coach Marlon Piodo back on top, 81-80.

Again, Remember equalized the count at 81-all on Somosot’s free throw with 23 ticks left before the final buzzer.

Ave Maria could have snatched the win, but failed to make one good play in its final possession. Ermac only split his charities but it was more than enough to vault Remember to victory with four seconds to go in the contest.

USPF Under-21 sneaks in with 1-point win
    www.sunstar.com.ph

THE UNIVERSITY of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Under-21 squad survived a thrilling game to beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos-Ave Maria Sanctuary Park, 73-72, in the 6th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League held at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Ironically, it was former USJ-R Baby Jaguar Yves Oliver Unabia who sank the pressure-packed free throws that saved USPF under trainees from a crushing defeat.

With USJ-R under-trainees leading, 71-72, with only a few ticks left in the game, Unabia, frustrated his former teammates by showing his nerves of steel to sink the game winning free throws.

USJ-R/AMSP had the chance to steal the win but USPF put up a good defensive stop forcing JR Abing to miss his final attempt.

USPF now tied with USJ-R with 3-2 win in Bracket B.

In the other game, the Athletes for Christ through Excellent Service (ACES) smothered the University of the Visayas (UV)-Mandaue Academy, 85-68. (RCM)

    The Freeman

Yves Oliver Unabia cooly sank a pair of pressure-packed free throws in the final 12 seconds of the game to lift the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers to a 73-72 nail-biter over the Ave Maria Sanctuary Pary in the 6th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

It was a heart-breaker for the Ave Maria mainstays of coach Marlon as they led all the way only to be spoiled by Unabia’s endgame heroics.

Ave Maria was on top for the last time at 71-72 as Unabia showed nerves of steel in sinking two free throws to helt USPF snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Yves Oliver, son of Games and Amusements Board (GAB)-7 ringside physician Jose Unabia, finished with 15 points.

Ave Maria had a chance to steal the win, but Abing misfired his attempt at the final buzzer.

Thus, USPF joined its victim at third place in Bracket B with similar 3-2 win-loss records in the tournament organized by M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) executive director and multi-titled coach Eddie B. Ybañez.

RemEMER of Concolacion Vice Mayor Ember V. Alinsug and Poblacion Oriental Brgy. Councilor Paul Alelu V. Flores trailed by two after the first period, 12-14, but rallied back with savvy in the second quarter to wrest the driver’s seat at the intermission, 33-28.

The 5th Avenue Telecom brightened up its semifinal chances with an 87-79 victory over the previously unbeaten Mabolo Christian Academy in come-from-behind fashion in the 6th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

5th Avenue of coach Marvin Felicis dictated the tempo of the match at the onset and took a 39-35 lead at halftime, but the Mabolo CA cagers staged a daring counter-attack in the third period to snatch the driver’s seat, 67-65, going into the final quarter.

Mabolo CA, however, could not sustain its momentum in the closing minutes of the game, allowing the 5th Avenue Telecom stalwarts to close the match with a 22-12 bang for the kill.
