Liga Pilipinas is a community-based, LGU-supported, commercially sponsored basketball league.

Who are the people involved in Liga Pilipinas?
Liga Pilipinas is owned by Pinoy Basketbol Inc., a corporation formed through the merger of* three (3) regional basketball stakeholders — the National Basketball Conference (NBC), Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA),* and Third Force Inc. (TFI). PBI is the newest member of the BAP-SBP, representing the geographic/ regional sector.

PBI is the highest policy making body of Liga Pilipinas. The nine-member PBI Board is composed of Nathaniel “Tac”Padilla (Chairman), Gov. Oscar Moreno (Vice Chairman), Jose Soberano (Treasurer), Michel Lhullier, Mayor Bambol Tolentino, Tito Palma, Andrew Teh, Jean Teh and Noli Eala.* In its board sits three (3) representatives elected from among the team owners of Liga Pilipinas, one each from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Who will manage and run Liga Pilipinas?
The business and basketball operations of Liga Pilipinas will be separately and independently managed and implemented by Pinoy Basketbol Management Inc., a domestic corporation which has been granted a multi-year irrevocable management contract by PBI. PBMI is headed by former PBA Commissioner Noli Eala as President/CEO and Commissioner of Liga Pilipinas.

PBMI has also assembled a team of highly skilled professionals who have had extensive experience and expertise in managing the affairs of a basketball league including former PBA Marketing Director Rico Meneses (Head of TV Affairs and Marketing/Sales), former Deputy MBA Commissioner Butch Antonio (Head of Basketball Operations and Adjudication Committee), web guru Joey Bautista (Head of Business Development), and Former* PBA Technical Committee Head Perry Martinez (Head of Technical Department and Player Relations).*

How many teams will Liga Pilipinas have?
Liga Pilipinas brings together sixteen teams representative of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao set into two groups. The Northern League is composed of eight (8 ) teams namely Ilocos Sur, Baguio, Pampanga, Taguig, and Cavite with Batangas, Laguna, and Rizal in their final stages of membership. The Southern League is composed of eight (8 ) teams namely Cebu, Mandaue, Bacolod, and Iloilo from the Visayas and Misamis Oriental/CDO, Zamboanga, Davao and Ozamis from Mindanao.

What is the format of Liga Pilipinas?
The format of Liga is meant to address three main objectives namely (1) simplicity for the public to understand; (2) economical for the league, teams and sponsors to control costs and maximize exposure; and (3) incentives-based for teams to minimize, if not, avoid no-bearing games.

Liga Pilipinas Season is composed of two conferences running four months per conference. Each conference will have two (2) phases, the Divisional Championships and the National Liga Championships. The total games per conference is a maximum of 175 games. The format is home and away thus, there are 16 venues where Liga will be played, one home venue per team.

When are the games of Liga Pilipinas?
Liga Pilipinas will develop a “Liga Habit” through a unique “stripping” schedule of games. Nothern League games will be played every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday while Southern League games will be on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. There will be two (2) games every playing day.

How are teams to be called?
Teams will be named after their home Province or City plus their monikers. However, the jerseys of the players will bear the logos/names of the respective corporate/LGU sponsor of the team.

What is the composition of the teams?
Liga Pilipinas basketball teams will be composed of a total of fourteen (14) players with at least eight (8 ) home-grown talents, a maximum of two (2) ex-pros and one fil-foreigner.

Will the games of Liga Pilipinas be televised?
All Liga Pilipinas games will be aired on national television, as well as local cable television. It will also be made available for viewing on-line. Arrangements are also being done for possible international distribution.

When is the opening day of Liga Pilipinas?
Liga is set to be launched through a Liga Opening Weekend from May 23 to May 25, 2008 spiked by a series of unique Liga Pilipinas events in key cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

How do the local communities and sponsors/ partners support Liga Pilipinas?
Liga Pilipinas is true partnership with the community and sponsors to bring basketball entertainment and outreach programs throughout the archipelago. Each Liga game will be a venue where communities can develop pride for their team. The League is set to provide a platform for Sponsors to bring their products closer to their target markets through above-the-line and below-the-line advertising, promotions, outreach programs and sales generating opportunities.
