CAMEROONIAN import Mike Harry had a stellar debut with 16 points and 10 rebounds as University of the Visayas beat University of Cebu, 81-62, at the start of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Harry also had two steals and a block for UV, which took a 20-point lead, 63-43 with 6:13 left.
The Webmasters were still within striking distance early, 36-43, but the Lancers closed out that stretch with a 7-0 run for a 50-36 lead heading to the final 10 minutes of play.
Arvie Cabanero and Wowie Escosio wound up with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lancers, runners-up to Southwestern University last year.
Noel Villanueva led the Webmasters with 15 markers.
In the juniors division, UV's Baby Lancers pulled off a tough win as they outlasted the Britt Reroma-mentored University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 77-74.
Ernesto Limitares hit the game-winning three-pointer with 4.9 seconds left.
The game was tied at 74-all after Kervin Villagracia scored off an inbound play and on a fastbreak with 27 ticks left on the clock. But that was plenty of time for UV and shifty guard John Escalona took advantage as he drove down the lane, drew the defense and found Limitares open on the wing.
USC had a shot to tie the game but Paul Galinato inexplicably tried a two-pointer as time expired.
Jun Manzo 22 points, with 12 coming in the second period. Escalona had 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
Villagracia led USC with 21 points and six boards.
THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters try to bounce back from losses in their previous games when they tangle in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Jaguars fell to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last Saturday night, 80-91, to even their record at 1-1 (win-loss). The Webmasters also fell to the very same Lancers in their opening assignment, 62-81.
These two squads actually fought for the third place trophy last season with the Jaguars coming out on top.
But with both squads parading nearly new lineups, the action is expected to be fierce as they try to establish their place in the league’s pecking order this season behind the league powerhouses, UV and the reigning champions Southwestern University.
With the exit of star guard Brian Heruela, the Webmasters are still looking for their identity as they look for contributions from all corners.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, have seemingly found theirs in prized rookie finds Rendell Senining and Fletcher Galvez, both coming from the juniors titlists, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles. / Correspondent Jonas Panerio
