Cedar Loses Match, But Joins Top 4 Teams

Cedar College of Computer Technology lost its match against University of St. La Salle,76-80, but instead joined the top four teams advancing to the crossover semifinals yesterday afternoon at the West Negros College gym in the 27th NOPSSCEA men's basketball tournament. University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams scored a lopsided win against ABE International Business College, 156-51, and tied with Cedar at (2-3) win-loss card but Cedar prevailed in the win-over-the other rule, losing to the same team, 77-73 last Wednesday at NOMPAC gym.

Ricahrd Ong topscored again for Cedar with 20 points, Jessie Boy Moreño 17, Audie Locsin 13 and Arnold Locsin 9. Celestial led USLS Stingers attack with 24 points. USLS Stingers and CSA-B Eagles ended with 3-2 win-loss card, but the Stingers prevailed applying the same rule when they beat the Eagles in their own encounter, 70-65 Thursday.

The crossover semifinal's will start this afternoon, with 8-time NOPSSCEA champion West Negros College Mustangs facing USLS Stingers, while CSA-B against Cedar College at the WNC gym.

The winners in each group will advance to the championship, while the losers will face each other for third place on Saturday next week, October 6, 2007.

Elementary Caging Championship Today

The elementary basketball championship will start today, with University of St. La Salle and St. John Institute to dispute the crown. Bacolod Tay Tung High School Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod will vie for third place finish.

Secondary Crossover Quarterfinals Starts

The secondary basketball tournament crossover quarterfinals will start today at NOMPAC gym. Bracket A No. team, USLS will meet No. 2 in bracket D, St. John's Institute starting at 9 a.m. MCA (1B) will traded basket with LCC-M (2C); WNC (1C) vs. Tangub Christin Academy (2B), while Silay Institute (1B) vs. La Consolacion School-Gardenville at 3:30 p.m.

Mustangs, Cedar forge finals duel

Eight-time defending champion West Negros College will take on CEDAR College from Cadiz City for the NOPSSCEA men's collegiate basketball crown on Saturday at the WNC Gym in Bacolod City.

With three players in double figures and eight others scoring at least two, the Mustangs clinched the first championship slot and the twice-to-beat bonus by crushing the University of St. La Salle Stingers, 83-32, in Saturday's semifinals. While Vengie Vergara's outside shooting contributed to the Mustangs' breakaway, it was their stifling defense that left the Stingers dumbfounded especially in the fourth quarter, where USLS was held to just two points.

Vergara again topscored for the Mustangs with 16 points on four treys, while Rundy Baydo and Jetric Sumido added 12 apiece.

Not to be outdone, the Cadiz-based cagers continued their giant-killing ways over the weekend as they ousted Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles in the semifinals, before booting out the fancied La Salle five with a 71-67 decision yesterday.

It will mark the first time that Cedar will vie for the title since it joined the league three years ago. But they had to go through some anxious moments against La Salle.

After falling behind by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, the Stingers' hopes were resuscitated when Arrom Aledron connected on a triple with 15 seconds left that cut the lead to two, 67-69.

Aledron stole the ball in the next play but his triple went awry this time and Jessie Moreño drained two free throws for Cedar for the final nail on the Stingers' coffin.

Shrugging off a 70-64 defeat at the hands of the Stingers Friday, Cedar broke away from an 8-all tie in the first period to seize control as Jay Villegas and Reno Paulo Locsin stood at the forefront of the attack with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Aside from a 70-57 win that eliminated San Agustin Saturday, Cedar was also responsible for the surprisingly early exit of perennial contender and last year's losing finalist, the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, which it defeated, 77-73, in the elimination-round.

Moreño registered 12 points, while teammates Audie Locsin and Michael Blanco combined for 20 markers.

Aledron's 29-point effort went down the drain as the Stingers finished third for the second straight year. John Repique and Arnulfo Corriente added 10 and 8 points, respectively for the Stingers.

In the high school division, the multi-titled West Negros College Baby Mustangs and newcomer Silay Institute set up an intriguing championship showdown, after scraping past USLS and Mansilingan Christian Academy, respectively.

The Baby Mustangs came through with an impressive 74-66 win over La Salle, before SI dominated MCA from start to finish for a 92-75 victory.*CPT

Cedar College of Computer Technology made history for the first time as the only school, outside of Bacolod City, that will challenge defending champion West Negros College in this year's 27th NOPSSCEA men's basketball finals on Saturday at the WNC Gym.

But Cedar has a big fight ahead of them by hurdling twice the defending champion, seeking its ninth title, in order to claim the title.

WNC has a clean sweep, 6-0 of its matches going to its title-retention, while Cedar rose from the grave to its first ever title campaign after four years of joining the NOPSSCEA.

Cedar beat USLS Stingers, 71-67 in their knockout game yesterday at WNC Gym, for the right to face defending champion in the finals. Cedar avenged its loss to the same team, 80-76, the first time last Friday at NOMPAC gym. But it's loss did not deter them to join the top four teams, even UNO-R Rams, whom they also beat in elimination, 77-73, defeated ABE International Business College, 156-51, also on Friday. Their entry to the top four was due to the win-over-the-other rule, with their conquest of UNO-R Rams. They also scored over ABE, 109-47 to have a 2-2 win-loss record to tie with the Rams and the Stingers. In the top four crossover Saturday, they scored another upset with their tormentor, Colegio San Agustin-B Eagles, 70-57, to forge a knockout match with the Stingers yesterday and won. They lost to the Eagles, 72-83 on their first meeting last Sunday, September 23.

Jessie Boy Moreño tied with Audie Locsin with 17 points each, capped with his three 3 points, with Locsin 1 to lead Cedar attack against the Eagles. Jay Villegas added 13, Arnold Locsin 11 and Richard Ong 9, who made it all in the rainbow area.

Michael Ledesma has 14 points, Rocky Gomez 13, Rogie Gelasan 8 and Rommel Tuyo 7 for the Eagles.

Against the Stingers, Jay Villegas topscored with 18, Arnold Locsin 14, Jessie Boy Moreño 12, Audie Locsin 11 and Michael Blanco 8. it was Arom Aledro who led the Stingers with 29 points, five above the arc. John Repique 10, Marlon Gonzales 8, and Arnolfo Corriente 8.

The title showdown will start at 3 p.m. Saturday and in case a playoff, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the same venue.

Meanwhile, West Negros College Baby Mustangs will also dispute the secondary basketball title against Silay Institute also on Saturday, after the match between USLS and Mansilingan Christian Academy.

One victory.

That's what separates the West Negros College Mustangs from snaring their ninth straight NOPSSCEA crown.

Standing in their way is surprise finalist CEDAR College, which the Mustangs will face at 3 p.m. today at the WNC Gym.

Still unbeaten in six games, the Mustangs will be armed with a twice-to-beat incentive against Cadiz-based CEDAR, which has earned a reputation of a giant-killer in this year's tournament.

A CEDAR win will pave the way for a playoff at 3 p.m. Sunday.

WNC is actually gunning for two titles today with its high school team battling Silay Institute in the finals at 10:30 a.m., after the third place showdown between University of St. La Salle Integrated School and Mansilingan Christian Academy.

Written off from the title picture because of its lack of firepower in previous campaigns, CEDAR, only in its third year in the league, relied on a sleek run-and-gun game and torrid outside shooting to scalp University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 77-73, in the eliminations.

Entering the page system semifinals as the fourth-ranked squad, CEDAR stunned Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, before taking out second-seed University of St. La Salle Sunday.

And although his team handily disposed CEDAR early in the tournament, the Cadiz-based quintet's recent resounding victories are enough reasons for the Mustangs' sophomore coach Dennis Tumayan to be wary.

"Of course, we are not taking them lightly. We know that their morale is high after their recent wins," said Tumayan, whose team drubbed CEDAR, 97-64, in their Sept. 25 duel.

Interestingly, it was CEDAR's cue to score one upset after another.

"We want to stop their momentum even if it means that we have to employ our press from start to finish," Tumayan said.

He said his players are confident of finishing off CEDAR today.

Skipper Vengie Vergara, WNC's leading scorer, will stand at the forefront of the Mustangs' attack with Ryan Flores, Virgilio Dapar, Alfie Villariza and Jason Mellarin expected to play important supporting roles.

Mustangs seize 9th straight title

West Negros College summoned its vast championship experience in the face of a relentless challenge from CEDAR College to record an 85-80 win Saturday for its ninth straight NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball crown before a capacity crowd at the WNC Gym.

Reserve swingman Rundy Baydo, center Virgilio Dapar and power forward Jason Mellarin bailed out the Mustangs with timely baskets in the final quarter. The Cadiz-based cagers kept it close with three-point shooting and scrappy offensive rebounding, key factors in shocking victories over perennial contenders University of St. La Salle, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos and Colegio San Agustin Bacolod in the run-up to the championship match.

But the Mustangs simply had a deeper bench and the size advantage, and the win, which completed a seven-game sweep of this year's tournament, merely validated their dominating presence in the league.

Baydo finished with a team-high 17 points, including 9 in the fourth quarter. His output more than made up for the performance of ailing Vengie Vergara, who was limited to 8 points.

Vergara, though, made his presence felt on the defensive end, blocking a potential momentum-shifting triple from hot-shooting Richard Ong with 49.3 seconds left that could have trimmed the advantage to three points.

"It's a good thing the players in the bench stepped up," coach Dennis Tumayan, referring to Baydo and Jetric Sumido, who posted 10 points.

Tumayan offered the win to the WNC management for its support to the squad.

Baydo's triple near the four-minute mark of the final quarter provided the breathing room the Mustangs needed to finally put away the Cadiz-based squad.

Dapar and Mellarin imposed their will inside the paint with four points each inside the final three minutes.

Still, CEDAR managed to give the Mustangs a scare.

Trailing 73-80 after a Dapar undergoal stab, Ong stroked home the last of his six treys from the right corner to cut the lead to four. But Mellarin scored on a tip-in with 1:24 left and point guard Alfie Villariza made two free throws with 14.5 ticks remaining to preserve the victory.

The Mustangs threatened to break the game open in the first half, going ahead 40-28 with four minutes left in the second quarter. But CEDAR unleashed a 14-1 spurt, highlighted by three triples from Ong to take the first half, 42-41.

WNC, though, came out ferocious in the third quarter utilizing its size advantage and also relied on Villariza's free-scoring ways to reclaim the advantage.

Dapar pumped in 15 points, while Mellarin and Villariza added 13 and 12, respectively.

The fouling out of Audie Locsin and Jessie Boy Moreño hastened CEDAR's downfall as the Cadiz-based squad ran out of steam in the end.

Locsin contributed 16 points, while Moreño picked up 13.

"We achieved our goal of reaching the championship this year," CEDAR coach Rommel Balandra told the DAILY STAR.

"We just stayed positive, even with this loss. We know we are in the land of the giants," he added. *CPT

WNC Mustangs pocket 9th NOPSSCEA crown

NOPSSCEA cage fans got the surprise they never expected last Saturday when obscure CEDAR Computer College of Cadiz City, the surprise finalist, challenged perennial champion West Negros College Mustangs for the collegiate basketball title of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) at a packed WNC Gym.

The Mustangs, as expected, played cohesive team basketball, never allowing the never-say-die CEDAR cagers to dictate the tempo of the game. And when the gutsy challengers from North Negros were poised to take over midway in the third, coach Jack Tumayan turned to underrated two-guard Rundy Baydo and promising small forward Jetric Sumido who, together engineered several crucial runs that took the sting off CEDAR's pulsating offensive rhythm.

Tumayan later told Sun.Star Bacolod he was thankful his gamble of sending in Baydo and Sumido paid off. Baydo's timely jumpers and Sumido's incursions inside the lane sent the message midway in the third that the Mustangs had enough firepower in their bench to stave off whatever effects the Cedar bench expected from their strategy of platoon substitutions obviously intended to confuse the WNC defense.

Baydo, who elsewhere during the series was content on resting three-point specialist Vengie Vergara, topscored for the Mustangs with 17 points and five rebounds and got scoring support from slotmen Vergelio Dapar and Jason Millarin who chipped in with 15 and 13 points.

Point guard Alfie Villariza added 11 of his own while Sumido finished with 10 even as Vergara was held to just 8 points, his lowest output of the series.

The sweet-shooting Richard Ong sizzled with a game-high 21 points for CEDAR while Audie Locsin chipped in with 16 and Jessie Moreño with 15 in a losing effort.

Meanwhile, an upset rocked the championship of the high school division as Silay Institute defeated West Negros College, 84-76, in overtime after the Baby Mustangs, mentored by Joebert Pastias, lost their key men to personal fouls in regulation period.

In the battle for third place, Mansilingan Christian Academy drubbed University of St. La Salle-Integrated School, 80-67, also at the WNC Gym.

UNO-R Beats ABE-IBC in NOPSSCEA Cagefest

University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) defeated ABE International Business College, 146-33 at the start of the collegiate basketball hostilities in this year’s Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) last Sunday at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

On Sunday, September 22, UNO-R will face Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod 3:00 p.m. at the same venue, followed by defending champion West Negros University Mustangs against University of St. La Salle Stingers at 4:30 p.m. in the collegiate level at USLS Coliseum. The Mustangs and Stingers match will precede after the opening ceremony which starts at 3 p.m. with former Congressman now National Chess Federation President and Basketball Association of the Philippines President Prospero Pichay as guest of honor. Actually, the secondary and elementary boy’s basketball competition already opened last Saturday at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center pitting Silay Institute against La Consolacion College-Main where the former won, 84-57. West Negros University Baby Mustangs also defeated Tangub Christian Academy, 68-48.

Last Sunday, USLS beat Christian Academy of Bacolod, 77-29; Jack & Jill-City Heights lost to sister school Jack & Jill-PHHC, 38-64 and Don Bosco Technical Insititute-Victorias won over Tangub Christian Academy, 66-23 all in elementary level. The secondary matches will resume this Saturday at NOMPAC. USLS meets Maranatha Christian College at 1:30 p.m.; St. John’s Insititue against St. Joseph School-La Salle at 2:45 p.m. and Mansilingan Christian Academy and Bacolod Christian College at 4:00 p.m. The schedule matches will be played daily after the opening on Sunday until October 5. The matches will continue upon availability of the venues after October 5, according to tournament director Henry Doble.

Meanwhile, the collegiate level will have their second round also in specified dates. Last year’s 1st runner-up, Cedar Computer College of Cadiz City will not see action this year for yet unknown reason, but initially it was due to financial aspect.*

Nopsscea opening rites set Sept. 21 in USLS

It’s all systems go for the opening of this year’s edition of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural, and Educational Association at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City this Sunday.

Representatives from the 36 NOPSSCEA member schools will troop to the St. La Salle Coliseum at 3 p.m. for the opening ceremonies with former Basketball Association of the Philippines and Chess Federation of the Philippines president Prospero Pichay Jr. as guest speaker.

Also invited to give messages at the opening rites are Gov. Isidro Zayco, Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Rep. Monico Puentevella, and Schools Division Superintendent Rizalino Tortosa.

NOPSSCEA president Fr. Noly Que, task force chairpersons Rosario Gusman (educational), Roger Banzuela (sports), Rudy Reveche (cultural) and Angelina Guinanao (outreach) will hoist the banners during the event.

After the ceremonies, West Negros University Mustangs will begin their title-defending campaign in college basketball against host USLS Stingers.

Although basketball rivalries among the participating schools started the previous weekend, all eyes are trained at the WNU vs. Stingers as both squads are expected to field new members of their varsity teams.

Earlier, WNU coach Jack Tumayan said the Mustangs will be playing without their previous years’ standouts Ely Olarte and Alfie Villariza as both are no longer eligible to play in the games this year.

Tumayan said he will have at least three new players to help the team defend their NOPSSCEA title.

Meanwhile, in last week’s basketball games, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos’ Rams opened their bid to wrestle the crown from WNU as it blasted off ABE International Business College, 146-33, in the game played at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Before the opening rites at the USLS, the Rams’ will face the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles on Sunday in their 3 p.m. match-up at the Po Hang gym.

Also registering their first wins in this year’s edition of the NOPSSCEA basketball games are Silay Institute and WNU high school boys who beat LCC-Main and Tangub Christian Academy last week.

SI prevailed over LCC-Main, 84-57 while the junior Mustangs brushed off TCA, 68-48, in separate games at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center.

In grade school category, USLS-IS young dribblers stamped their class against their counterparts from Christian Academy of Bacolod, 77-29, while Jack & Jill-PHHC turned back sister school Castleson High (JJS-City Heights), 64-38. Pichay lauds Nopsscea leaders, athletes

Basketball Association of the Philippines and Chess Federation of the Philippines chief Prospero Pichay Jr. yesterday urged athletes to cultivate the value of self-discipline, sportsmanship, and dedication to their training as they aspire for greater heights in their respective events.

During the opening ceremonies of the 28th edition of the NOPSSCEA competitions at the St. La Salle Coliseum yesterday, where he was the guest speaker, Pichay lauded the officials of the association for integrating sports, education and culture in developing competitive spirit among students.

This is the kind of exposure our athletes need and it molds today’s youth not only to be better athletes but future leaders in the country as well, Pichay said.

He said NOPSSCEA is on the right track and he urged the athletes who are competing in different events to train harder and aim high.

“Western Visayas has always been a powerhouse in sports and we hope to see from the ranks of NOPSSCEA emerge an Olympic gold medalist for the country,” Pichay said.

Meanwhile, as head of the BAP-SBP, he stressed the need for all stakeholders in basketball to unite and start working together for the sake of the sports.

He added that the Manila Trial Court decision favoring his group for the leadership of the BAP-SBP is final and executory and he is set to inform the Phillipine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee about it to settle the issue once and for all.

“I’ve been always consistent with my stand for unity in basketball and I am even willing to step down from my BAP post if that is what is needed to resolve the conflict,” Pichay said.

As head of the national chess federation, he said his thrust is to strengthen the organization in every region and to establish tournaments that will tap new and young talents.

Pichay said the country is teeming with chess wizards and he hopes to see a NOPSSCEA athlete making it to the chess’ national youth team someday.

On the other hand, NOPSSCEA basketball games will be played this week at the La Salle Coliseum, West Negros University, and St. John’s Institute.

Starting today until Sept. 26, Eastside Badminton Club in Bacolod City will host the badminton games while football matches will be played in Panaad, USLS, and UNO-R fields.

USLS also hosts the Karatadeo competition on Sept. 25, lawn tennis, Sept. 25-27, Taekwondo, Sept. 26-28, and volleyball until Oct. 14.*NAB

Pichay Donates P100,000 to NOPSSCEA

Former Surigao congressman Prospero Pichay, Jr. has committed P100,000 for the proposed construction of Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association Multi-Purpose building during the opening yesterday of the 28th NOPSSCEA season at University of St. La Salle (USLS) Coliseum.

Pichay, incumbent president of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) and the National Chess Federation of the Philipppines (NCFP), was guest of honor at the opening rites. He handed the check to NOPS-SCEA president Fr. Noli A. Que after his speech.

Pichay urged every athlete to be a dreamer, whether it is a small or a bigger one as he emphazised that in sports it is physical fitness and education that go hand in hand. The bigger dream is to aim for that Olympic gold that will come from NOPSSCEA because it is not impossible to win in the Olympic.

“Let’s forget other NSA’s (National Sports Associations) and let’s concetrate on NOPSSCEA,” he told the athletes.

“ To make bigger dreams, let’s educate our athletes and the discipline will follow, because sports is a discipline. We should be the best sportsman, although winning is important, but it should be winning with dignity,” Pichay added.

This year’s theme is “NOPSSCEA at 28th: Reaching Out”.

Fifty two (52) active member schools compose this year’s NOPSSCEA that will compete in the month-long sports hostilities, including cultural competitions.

Fr. Noly A. Que, welcomed participants followed by messages of Dr. Rizalino Tortosa, Schools Division Superintendent of Negros Occidental; Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia; Governor Isidro P. Zayco and Congressman Monico O. Puentevella, who sent their respective repre-sentives.

Hadasa Camporazo, the 2008 WVPRISAA Vocal Solo OPM champion rendered a musical number followed by hoisting of NOPSSCEA banner by Que, Dr. Rosario Guzman, Chairman-Education Task force; Roger A. Banzuela, Chairman-Sports Task Force; Rodolfo Reveche, Chairman-Cultural Task Force and Angelina Guinanao, Chairman-Outreach Task Force.

Banzuela, who is also Western Visayas BAP Regional Director introduced Pichay.

Que led the awarding of recognition to 2007-2008 Sports Achiever Schools and officially declared the opening of the 2008 NOPSSCEA Week, after the Oath of Sports-manhip by Ruby Ann Long-no, the 2006-2007 National PRISAA MVP; Champion Singles in 2006 National PRISAA, Champion Team Play in 2007 National PRISAA and Champion Mix in 2008 National PRISAA.

The entertainment numbers were given by Bacolod Tay Tung Wu Shu Team; Jack & Jill School karate Kids and USLS PEP Squad.

USLS Stingers and eight-time defending champion West Negros University Mustangs match-up followed with Pichay and Que doing the ceremonial toss.

Twelve sports diciplines will be contested with events under the Palarong Pambansa will be played on September 20-28, according to Banzuela.

Basketball matches already started last September 13, with Henry Doble and Ramon Maquiling as tournament directors.
