CEBU CITY — M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City tripped 24/7 Freight Logistics Promac, 93-86, Monday night to claim the first crossover semifinals slot in the Talk ’N Text-Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Invitational meet at the New Cebu City Coliseum here.
The Jewelers, who bested Dazz ’Sang Patak, 90-89, last Sunday, thus swept Group A of the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in cooperation with the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC).
In the nightcap, Richard Ian Saladaga scored the go-ahead lay-up with 2.8 seconds left in the game to lift Hotel Fortuna-Firefly to a 90-88 win over Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr.
On the defensive end, Saladaga tapped away MisOr’s inbound pass before the final buzzer sounded.
Saladaga, who played for the Cebu Landmaster last season, led Hotel Fortuna Firefly with 18 points, while Marlon Kalaw added 16.
Dennis Concha and Lowell Briones led MisOr with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
In the first game, Jimwell Torion essayed another stellar performance as he banged in a huge triple at the 1:15 mark of the fourth quarter to give M. Lhuillier a 91-85 advantage.
After a Carlos Sayon split his free throws, Torion added one more field goal to set the final score.
M. Lhuillier controlled the first three quarters until a late surge by 24/7 Promac that gave them the lead for the first time, 82-81, after Jan Malinao nailed a jumer with 4:41 left in the final canto.
However, Stephen Padilla made a big three-pointer and Alano Caputolan added two free throws to give them a four-point cushion, 86-82.
Kane Abatayo clustered three unanswered points that closed the gap at 85-86, but Padilla converted two free throws to ease the pressure, setting the stage for Torion’s late-game heroics.
Padilla led all scorers with 23 points, while Torion had 17.
