    The 2007 PBA Draft

    Henkel’s ace Fil-Am joins draft

    The Philippine Star

Fil-Am guard Ryan Reyes is the first applicant for the 2007 PBA Rookie Draft set Aug. 19 at Market Market in Taguig.

The 6-foot-2 Reyes, a former high school teammate of NBA three-point champion Jason Kapono of the Miami Heat, made an impressive stint in the recently concluded PBL Unity Cup, leading Henkel Sista to a third-place finish behind eventual champion Harbour Centre and runner-up Cebuana Lhuillier.

Reyes, 23, led the Super Sealers in scoring with 11.4 points average, while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Accompanied by agent Charlie Dy, Reyes personally visited the PBA office Tuesday to submit his application and other pertinent papers.

    “Handang-handa na,” said Reyes.

As the July 20 deadline for local born players – and June 29 for all Fil-Ams – nears, more aspirants are expected to follow suit.

Ken Bono, JC Intal, Ryan Arana, Marvin Cruz, JR Quinahan and Samigue Eman are other PBL stars expected to turn pro next PBA campaign.

Fil-Am guard Ryan Reyes became the first rookie to apply for the 2007 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Draft set Aug. 19 at the Market Market Place in Taguig.

The 6-foot-2 Reyes, a former high school teammate of NBA three-point champion Jason Kapono of the Miami Heat, is HenkelSista’s star playmaker in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) where he helped the Super Sealers to a third place finish in the recent Unity Cup.

In his stint in the season-ending conference, the 23-year-old Reyes led the Super Sealers in scoring with 11.4 points average, while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Reyes, who played alongside Kapono at Artesian High in California, averaged 2.4 steals a game to pace the league, while being named Fantastic Freshman during the PBL’s conference awards.

Accompanied by his agent Charlie Dy, Reyes personally visited the PBA office to submit his application and other pertinent papers.

"Handang-handa na," said the Fil-Am in straight Filipino. Although raised in the US, Reyes’ parents are both Filipinos at the time he was born.

Prior to his PBL stint, Reyes also saw action in the National Basketball Conference (NBC) and played for the Cebuana Lhuillier sponsored national team in 2005.

PG - Chico Lanete, Marvin Cruz, Macky Escalona, Jonas Villanueva, Khiel Misa, Alex Angeles
S/F - Jason Castro, Bonbon Custodio, JC Intal, Allan Evangelista, Jeff Chan, Ryan Reyes, Jofeson Gonzales
F/C - Ken Bono, Samigue Eman, Doug Kramer, Floyd Dedicatoria,

Lanete applied for the last year's draft making him a free agent this year.

Does this mean the likes of JR Quinahan, Lawrence Bonus, Larry Rodriguez and Beau Belga aren't applying for the draft? What about the more hardcore players like Chito Jaime, Rommel Galvez, Leomer Losentes, Jeff De Guzman (of EAC), Orlan Daroya, Bong Melocoton? No other draft prospects from the province like Reed Juntilla?

    Re: The 2007 PBA Draft

I wonder who is drafting first?

Without a clearcut franchise player in this group of draftees it'll be tough to make any one a consensus Number 1.

Ken Bono has the credentials to be the top overall pick - UAAP MVP, great showing statistically with Cebuana the last two PBL conferences - but is not a classic franchise player in the mold of say, an Asi Taulava or Kelly Williams.

Jayson Castro is another top prospect, a guy who put together great seasons with the NCAA and the PBL, but unless his surname is Caguioa or Helterbrand I doubt he'll go Number 1 overall as a guard.

JC Intal is another high profile player who could pull a Rich Alvarez and be a surprise Number 1 pick. But he does not have two UAAP MVP trophies and was unable to fully perfect his stardom with Ateneo. His PBL stats aren't exactly eye-popping either. But his overall package of size, length, skill and of course sheer athletic ability, in an otherwise not very remarkable draft class, just might make him the Number 1 pick. Ateneo players have had a knack for being surprise Number 1 picks, like Alex Araneta before Alvarez, so why not Intal?

    Re: The 2007 PBA Draft

there's a chance that intal would pull an alvarez and be the number one pick.

but hopefully the similarities end there if he wants to have a successful career. at this point, rich has yet to materialize into a player deserving of that number one pick. unless he picks it up, fans will just see him as a flop.
