    corrections..
Ateneo vs UST was the first game, then DLSU vs SBC, then Prepetual vs PCU.

    'Nkomakolem' is actually spelled 'Nkemakolam'

*there is no blue eagle with a last name of 'tin'.. maybe it's 'tiu' typo error? letter 'U' and 'N' are far from each other in the keyboard..

^Lowercase "u" is like lowercase "n" when handwritten hastily, so the error must have come from there... Unless Ateneo has a female player on its men's basketball roster named Chris-Tin... ;D

    mb.com.ph

FAR EASTERN University makes its debut against Letran today in the resumption of the Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup at the San Juan Arena.

The Tamaraws, now coached by former national player and pro Glenn Capacio, will field a team of old reliables and tough rookies in the 2 p.m. match against the Knights.

Marlon Adolfo, Benedict Fernandez and big man Alfred Gerilla are expected to carry the team but new faces Mark Barroca, Paul Sanga and former Baby Tam star Jens Knuttel could steal the show from them.

The Knights are coming off an ego-boosting 72-63 triumph over the Ateneo Blue Eagles last week and will definitely be eyeing a second consecutive win.

The Mapua Cardinals and San Beda Red Lions clash in the 4 p.m. encounter.

The Cardinals, likewise, would like to secure a berth in the quarterfinals while San Beda is aching to go back and win after bowing to De La Salle last Sunday.

Jose Rizal University, the only team with a clean slate after two games, stakes its unblemished record against the Philippine Christian University in the main game at 6 p.m.

Interested parties may get tickets through TicketNet or at the Arena gate. Filoil Portagas, Flying V Bio-Diesel, Filpride Energy Corp., Total Philippines Corporation, Elf Lubricants, SMART Communications, Shell Flintkote, Security Bank, Banco de Oro, Gerry’s Grill, Revicon I-ON, BAYO, CDO Holiday Hotdogs, Immuvit and ACCEL are sponsors.

    Letran, NU tear down rivals

    Inquirer
Last updated 04:49am (Mla time) 05/12/2007

    GAMES TOMORROW (The Arena)
    2 p.m. DLSU vs JRU
    4 p.m. PCU vs Ateneo
    6 p.m. UE vs Letran

MANILA, Philippines—The National University Bulldogs sure know how to attract attention.

After beating defending NCAA winner San Beda College, the NU Bulldogs picked three-time UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles as their next victims, hacking out an 81-63 decision yesterday in the Filoil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

In the opening match, Letran evened its record to 2-2 after an 83-74 victory over University of the Philippines, which is still winless in two outings.

Jay Jahnke led three other Bulldogs who scored in double figures, sinking a game-high 20 markers while getting support from Edwin Asoro who made 17, Jonathan Fernandez who added 16 and Mike Salbado who had 11 points.

From a 33-32 halftime lead, Jahnke had a 10-point explosion in the third canto to help the Bulldogs erect a 55-44 advantage entering the payoff quarter.

The Eagles, who fell to 1-4, got 16 points from Jobe Nkomakolem and 12 markers each from Christopher Sumalinog and Martin Quimson.

NU dropped its first match, 61-57, against Jose Rizal University on April 29, but rebounded with an 84-76 trouncing of San Beda three days later.
Ateneo had so far lost to arch rival De La Salle, Mapua and Letran while its lone win came at the expense of 2006 UAAP finals tormentor University of Sto. Tomas.

The Knights were somewhat tentative during the first period, trailing 12-18 prompting coach Louie Alas to lash out at his players.

“They were too excited at first. I had to remind them this is a team game, they shouldn’t be making moves without looking at our set plays,” Alas said.

Alas’ reprimand hit its target, as the Knights ended the first half with a 16-point spread, 54-38.

    The scores:

    LETRAN 83—Melegrito 15, Daa 13, Guevarra 11, Refosar 10, Faundo 10, Quinday 9, Jazul 6, Dangcal 3, Ranises 2, Cabonce 2, del Rosario 2.
    UP 74—Serios 20, Agbayani 15, Reyes 9, Rivera 8, de Asis 4, Epres 3, Rosales 3, del Victoria 3, Marfori 3, Hipolito 2, Gamboa 2.
    Quarterscores: 12-18; 54-38; 73-65; 83-74.

Bombers, Archers collide for FilOil lead

    Inquirer
Last updated 05:36am (Mla time) 05/13/2007

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University and La Salle clash in a battle of unbeaten teams in the FilOil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup today at the Arena in San Juan.

The Bombers, with three straight wins, also tries to secure a berth in the next round with a win over the Archers at 2 p.m.

The Archers, seeking a grand return to the UAAP this season, are gunning for a third victory and a second win over an NCAA team after toppling reigning champ San Beda early this week.

Ateneo tries to bounce back from Thursday’s loss to National University when it takes on Philippine Christian University at 4 p.m. while University of the East seeks a third straight win when it tangles with Letran at 6.

The Eagles, who are using their second stringers, have a 1-4 record like the Dolphins, who are banned from the NCAA this season.

The Knights (2-2) are bidding to halt a two-game skid.

The NCAA host this year, JRU will have to get big numbers from Marvin Hayes, Jason Nocom, Maui Pradas and JM Wilson—all of them veterans of last year’s team under coach Ariel Vanguardia, to get past the Archers.

La Salle coach Franz Pumaren is expected to count on Rico Maierhofer, JV Casio, Ty Tang and Cholo Villanueva. Marc Anthony Reyes
