De La Salle University upended University of the East, 73-70, and Far Eastern University outlasted Mapua Institute of Technology, 78-68, Wednesday to set up a winner-take-all title showdown in the 2007 Nike Summer League basketball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Veteran guard Tyrone Tang scattered 17 points to lead the Franz Pumaren-mentored Archers to win over the Warriors and clinch the second finals berth, said the league in a statement.

The championship game is set for Sunday, June 10.

Rico Maierhofer added 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Jayvee Casio, James Mangahas, and Kish Co contributed 10 points each for the Archers.

Mark Borboran carried the fight for the Warriors with 16 points, followed by James Martinez with 11 points and Pari Llagas with 10 markers.

Up by only six points entering the final two minutes mark, La Salle held its ground against UE's determined rally.

The Warriors relied on Borboran and Hans Thiele to cut the deficit to only two, 70-72, with still 26 seconds remaining.

UE had a chance to tie the score, but Borboran missed a wide-open three-point attempt as time expired.

In the first game, Benedict Fernandez scored 10 of his 19 points in the payoff period as the Tamaraws pulled away in the closely-fought contest.

Fernandez got ample scoring support from JR Gerilla and rookies Riel Cervantes and Marc Baroca in leading the Tamaraws of coach Glen Capacio to victory.

Gerilla, a 6-4 recruit from University of Mindanao, added 16 points, Baroca contributed 14 and Cervantes had 10 points for the Tamaraws.

Neil Pascual and Jonathan Banal led the Cardinals with 15 points apiece, followed by Sean Co with 14 points and Ian Mazo with 10 points.

“La Salle is a strong team. Either way, it would be a good preparation for the UAAP,” said Capacio.

“We are starting to get into game shape while FEU is now a sharper, more cohesive team.” said Pumaren.

“I think FEU has the advantage,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, on their finals meeting with the Tamaraws. “They are a cohesive team.”
