    Warriors Rules HAIL '07 Again

    by Karisse Terņo

Eager and affirming their position in the collegiate basketball scene, the University of the East Red Warriors flamed their way over the tight defense of the Far Eastern University, 77-72, in the finals of the 2007 Home and Away Invitational League at the Warrior's Gymnasium last March 22.

It was another sweet victory for the Recto-based five after they successfully defended their championship crown once more against bitter neighboring rival Tamaraws.

Flaming off with immense eagerness to capture another victory against several rivals in the collegiate league, the Dindo Pumaren mentored squad took home another plum for their University.

It was a tough battle for the Warriors, who evidently had a hard time in beating the Tams who tried to dominate almost all departments during the early start of their match.

Playing without the warrior's main gunners, who were all ineligible to play in the league due to their respective commitments in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), the red and white squad still proved their worth inside the court.

The Warriors were led by freshmen Hans Thiele, Toto Bandaying and comebacking Hezy Val Acuņa, who all scored jumpers and treys in the last crucial minutes of their match.

Tam's Jonathan Fernandez and Mark Baracael led their squad in puffing fire in the early sets of the game, leading the board at 11-6 over the Warriors, two minutes left in the first quarter.

Thiele heated up the scene at the start of the second quarter when he made a two-hand follow-up dunk, 14-15, barely a minute gone in the mentioned quarter.

However, earnest and decisive to defeat their rivals, the Tams poured baskets after baskets against the low defense of the Warriors, giving them a bigger lead, 33-23, two minutes left in the clock for the first half.

Gaining their cohesiveness back inside the paint, the Red Warriors resurged during the second half, trying to match every point of their opponent and putting tighter defense against the Tams.

Acuņa complied precious points beyond the arc, giving the Warriors a lead against the Tams, 51-49, barely three minutes left in the third quarter.

With a tight gap over the two collegiate squads, intensity filled the gymnasium as the Red Warriors continued their quick plays and effectively paved way for a stronger lead, 68-62, six minutes left in the clock.

Determined and full of strength, the Tams answered back with jumpers over the locals cold defense down the arc, 68-69, three minutes left in the clock.

But luck seemed to be on the side of the red and white crowd, when the Warriors successfully compiled their plays perfectly, pressuring the Tams to commit foul errors, giving them chances on the line, adding points to the board and eventually sealing them with a sweet victory.

    Re: 2007 HAIL Champion!

Indeed, UE is the best off season team in the land. Even before the time of Dindo, talagang humahakot sila sa off-season.

Pero parang plateau ang laro nila...sa pagsimula ng UAAP hanggang matapos, they still play at the same level as they do in the offseason. Samantala ang mga kalaban nila ay umaangat.

There lies the challenge. How to bring their game to the next level.

That's more than skills and Xs and Os.
We had a head start in this game. At one time we had a glorious 3rd place finish in the World Championship and was the undisputed power in Asia. But the world has learned how to play it. They may not be as good as us,but they have enough smarts to make use of their height. That is enough to beat us.

Good to hear the Red Warriors have pocketed the coveted HAIL Crown. Val Acuna is quite a revelation, never expected him to be that good, and he actually plays some defense.

Now if only the UAAP could be painted red...

Currently, they have now 3 HAIL titles, 4 FMC titles, 2 CCL titles, hope by this time they can now get their 19th UAAP title.
    TIRA UE! FIGHT FOR VICTORY!
