    NEW COACH FOR LETRAN

    KNIGHTS NEXT COACH...

Not that coach Louie ALas is being sacked or something, he has at least 2-3 more yrs left in his contract with the Knights. We all know Alas has done very well as mentor to then promising cagers now strutting their wares in the pros like Kerby, Calaguio, Andaya, Enrile to name a few.

But like the proverbial cliche, "all good things must come to an end" one bad season for him and his contract might be halted.

Just a hypothetical question... What if coach Louie A's contract expires today, who do you think would be the best possible replacement?

Should the criteria be limitted only to former Knights who donned the Letran jersey or just about anyone with credentials who can equal if not surpass his achievements.

The ff would be the best choices...
    Rino Salazar, former asst. coach-Ginebra
Jing Ruiz, Squires champion coach; Elmer Latonio, his deputy

Are there any candidates actually being interviewed and/or applying for the job Escalera?

    Re: NEW COACH FOR LETRAN

Not really. As ive said, Alas has at least 2 more yrs as Knights coach.

I was just toying with the idea that when the time comes he steps down who the probable candidates would be.

    Any suggestions, sam?

In reference to the topic, i prefer Itoy Esguerra. Names like Jerry Gonzales, Billy Moddy is also ok. But in case di pwede si Itoy, i hope FERNANDO "DONG' LIBED will coach our beloved Knights. I'm sure after Samboy Lim, he's the most popular Knight in the 80's era. I still remember THE SHOT during the 1987 season. With Art Ayson and Tino Pinat serving as his deputies, the Knights will be there fighting.

    Re: NEW COACH FOR LETRAN

Si Itoy esguerra nga pala. Among the former Knights, he is the one with the most coaching experience...was it wth the UE Warriors. Jing Ruiz is another one, so is former 70's knight Molet Pineda. Nemie Villegas is too old to coach a varsity team.

Other names mentioned here like Libed, Moody, Arabit, Prior were once above-par players during their time but have no coaching experience to speak of, while Villoria is still active in the PBA.

Pwede pa siguro si JP Pacheco who i saw several times with the Letran bench joining the coaches huddle in the sidelines. If im not mistaken, he is part of the SMC group of Eric Altamirano doing provincial sorties with former PBA players.

    * * *Anton Viloria is currently employed as an assistant coach for defense of reigning Mindanao Division Champion Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr in the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA).* He has been detached from the PBA since last July.
