H Centre shuts off Kettle Korn

    The Philippine Star 11/24/2006

JC Intal produced a performance worthy of his status yesterday as Harbour Centre made it two in a row by clobbering Kettle Korn, 85-66, in the 2007 PBL Silver Cup at the UST gym.

Their loss to the UST Tigers in the UAAP finals already a thing of the past, Intal debuted impressively for the Port Masters as he fueled a big run in the third which he capped with a booming triple to turn a close contest into a rout.

Chico Lanete led Harbour with 14 points but the limelight simply belonged to the King Eagle.

He tallied only nine points but coach Jorge Gallent was already satisfied with his performance, considering that he joined the team only last Sunday.

He capped his performance with a two-handed dunk that saw the crowd explode in approval.

"He’s still adjusting to my system but watch him in our future games," beamed Gallent.

In the first game, Eugene Tan came through with a huge three-point shot at crunch time as the TeleTech Titans brought the Mail & More Comets down to earth, 79-70.

Out to erase the stigma caused by their shocking loss to the Toyota Otis Sparks last week, the Titans buckled down to serious business right away, imposing their will inside and outside to lead by as many as 22 points behind the red-hot shooting of Al Magpayo and Ariel Capuz.

But when the Comets got into their game and threatened to turn the game around, the Titans turned to their veterans who responded with clutch plays to stave off Mail & More’s determined fightback.

The Comets dropped to 1-2. Almost given up for the dead after trailing the Titans, 42-20, late in the second quarter, the Comets streaked their way back into the contest through the gutsy efforts of Michael Bravo and Ronjay Buenafe.

A 7-0 run capped by Bravo’s booming three-point shot pushed the Comets to within 68-72.

That run also saw their fans explode in utter excitement.

Howevere, Tan, a veteran of many championships, silenced Mail & More supporters by knocking in his first triple of the game after missing his earlier two attempts.

Francis Mercado, another grizzled veteran on the roster of coach Jerry Codiñera made it 77-68 after Buenafe bungled his open shot from way behind the 3-point arc barely 58 ticks left.

"We’re still struggling in our game but I’m glad we won this one," said Codinera. "I just hope we can play better in our next games.

The 6-foot-5 Magpayo finished with 17 points, 11 of them in a torrid first quarter performance that helped the Titans build a 25-14 advantage. Capuz tallied eight of his 15 markers in the second canto.

Also helping the cause of the Titans was the inability of the beefy 6-foot-5 JR Quinahan to dominate the shaded area this time.

After averaging 11.5 points and close to 10 rebounds in their first two games, Quinahan was limited to just seven points and the same number of rebounds — thanks to the rock-solid defense of Magpayo and Alfie Grijaldo. Bravo paced the Comets with 14 points, 10 of them in the payoff period as he sparked several spurts for the team.

    Harbour swamps Kettle Korn

FOR HARBOUR Centre, it was well worth the wait. JC Intal, who joined Harbour just two days ago, sparked a searing run late in the third quarter yesterday as the Harbour Port Masters made it two in a row by clobbering the Kettle Korn Tigers, 85-66, in the 2007 PBL Silver Cup at the UST gym.

For Intal, who played for Ateneo, the win carried a measure of revenge against Kettle Korn which has as core players, those from the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers who beat the Blue Eagles in the UAAP finals two months ago.

The 6-foot-3 Intal clustered five straight points, including a triple, to finally take the sting out of the Tigers who gave the Port Masters a fight in the first three quarters.

After taking a 60-50 lead at the end of the third, the Port Masters never encountered trouble again as Chico Lanete and Marvin Ortiguera put on the finishing touches.

With the win, Harbour Centre tied Sista for second place at 2-1.

Even coach Jorge Gallent could not hide his excitement with the arrival of the King Eagle who finished with 9 points in only 16 minutes of action.

"He gave us so many options," said Gallent. "But he’s doing well right now, kunting adjustments pa at tiyak na gaganda pa ang laro niya."

In the first game, Eugene Tan came through with a huge three-point shot at crunch time as TeleTech brought down Mail & More, 79-70.

Intal capped his impressive debut with a powerful two-handed dunk shot that had the crowd roaring in delight.

Lanete led Harbour with 14 points but Intal was definitely the star of the show.

Though he was fouled out, the crowd still gave him big applause in appreciation for his fine performance.

Out to erase the stigma caused by their shocking loss to the Toyota Otis Sparks last week, the Titans buckled down to serious business right away, imposing their will inside and outside to lead as much as 22 points behind the redhot shooting of Al Magpayo and Ariel Capuz.

But when the Comets got into their game and threatened to turn the game around, the Titans turned to their veterans who responded with clutch plays to stave off Mail & More’s determined fightback.

    The Comets dropped to 1-2.

Almost given up for the dead after trailing the Titans, 42-20, late in the second quarter, the Comets clawed their way back into the contest through the gutsy efforts of Michael Bravo and Ronjay Buenafe.

A 7-0 run capped by Bravo’s booming three-point shot pushed the Comets to within 68-72. That run also saw their fans explode in utter excitement.

GAMES TODAY (The Arena, San Juan)
    2 p.m.—Kettle Korn vs Magnolia
    4 p.m.—Hapee-PCU vs Toyota Otis

THE Hapee-PCU Teeth Masters shoot for their fourth straight victory in the PBL Silver Cup against the Toyota Otis Sparks today at The Arena in San Juan.

Buoyed by the exceptional performances of Jason Castro, Larry Rodriguez and Mark Borboran, the league-leading Teeth Masters are heavily favored in their 4 p.m. date with the Sparks, who have a 1-1 win-loss card.

“It’s still those three who are carrying this team,” said Hapee-PCU coach Jun Noel. “But there should be no complacency. We need more practice, we have to blend more.”

The Magnolia Spinners and the Kettle Korn-UST Tigers, both struggling despite enjoying the services of the core of two champion collegiate squads, try to end their winless runs at 2 p.m.

Despite a big effort by UAAP Finals MVP Jojo Duncil, the Tigers skidded to their third straight loss, 85-66, versus Harbour Centre last Thursday.

Recently, the Spinners also fell short to Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala, 89-85, in overtime.

A pre-season favorite, Magnolia coach Koy Banal hopes for better on-court communication among his San Beda players led by NCAA MVP Sam Ekwe, Jeff Chan and top rookie picks Jonas Villanueva and Bonbon Custodio.

Hapee-PCU, cellar-dwellers in recent conferences, rolled to their third straight triumph against the Sista Super Sealers, 71-66.

Castro again came through in the clutch, while Borboran finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine W. Payo

Hapee eyes 4th win vs Toyota Otis

    www.mb.com.ph

SURPRISE LEADER Hapee Toothpaste shoots for its fourth straight win against Toyota Otis, while fancied Magnolia Ice Cream hopes to nail its first one today in the 2007 PBL Silver Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

After beating Harbour Centre in tense showdown in the opener two weeks ago, the Teethmasters have won their last two games by huge margins, thus earning the respect they covet from the very start.

"To earn back the respect of some teams, we have to be in the upper bracket of the standings, and since we are currently on top, I hope they will now respect us," said coach Jun Noel. "But we should not be complacent."

The Teethmasters are bidding to win their first title since winning back-to-back championships three years. No team has won two in a row since then.

Noel admits they have a decisive height advantage over the boys of coach Louie Alas but they won't take them lightly when they meet at 4 p.m.

Clashing in the opening game at 2 p.m. are Magnolia and Kettle Korn in a match dubbed as "Battle of Champions."

The Magnolia Spinners, built around the core of NCAA champion San Beda, dropped their first two games against Henkel-Sista and Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala. The Kettle Korn, represented by UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas, lost three in a row, the latest was a 66-85 drubbing from the Port Masters.

Since winning the UAAP crown at the expense of the Ateneo Eagles, the Tigers have lost most of their matches. Despite that, coach Pido Jarencio remains confident they can bounce back from a string of setbacks.

Jason Castro, Mark Borboran and Larry Rodriguez are again expected to lead the assault of the Teethmasters. The troika, according to Noel, are capable of scoring half of the team’s output on a given day, what with their versatility and energy.

The Toyota Otis Sparks are perhaps the smallest squad in the 9-team field but they boast of two gutsy players in Marvin Cruz and JP Alcaraz.

The Spinners should draw the best from No. 1 pick Jonas Villanueva, Bonbon Custodio, Sam Ekwe and Yousif Aljamal to finally barge into the win column.

COACH Jun Noel stuck to a tested formula to make sure the Hapee-PCU Teeth Masters remain unbeaten.

With the troika of Jason Castro, Larry Rodriguez and Mark Borboran leading the attack, the Teeth Masters subdued the Toyota Otis Sparks, 75-65, in the PBL Silver Cup yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.

Castro dished out 17 points, eight rebounds and one assist to keep the Teeth Masters on top at 4-0. Borboran and Rodriguez also tossed in a combined 21 markers

Earlier, the Magnolia Spinners ended a two-game slide with a 97-74 rout of the Kettle Korn-UST Tigers.

    Yousif Aljamal finished a rebound-shy of a double-double with a game-high 23 points and nine boards.

But it was the trio of Bonbon Custodio, Gerard Jones and Jeff Bombeo who set the tone for the lopsided victory in the first quarter.

“It was a week’s worth of practice,” said assistant coach Potit de Vera, who called the shots in the closing minutes. “The players already know what to do even without coach Koy.”

Magnolia coach Koy Banal left midway in the third period and rushed to a PBA game of Purefoods, where he also serves as an assistant coach.

Kettle Korn mentor Pido Jarencio, an assistant coach of San Miguel Beer, also skipped the game.

Assistant coach Beaujing Acot handled the Tigers, who slumped to their fourth straight loss.

The Teeth Masters refused to fold as the Sparks moved within 46-40 in the third quarter.

    The Sparks slipped to 1-2.

    Castro makes Hapee win
    By Joey Villar
    The Philippine Star 11/26/2006

Prolific guard Jayson Castro unleashed another remarkable performance and Hapee Toothpaste-PCU walloped Toyota Otis, 75-65, yesterday to extend its amazing run to four in the PBL Silver Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Castro, MVP runner-up in the last two conferences, struck with 17 points including 11 in the third quarter, helping fuel a run that carried the Teeth Sparklers to their fourth win in as many games.

"He’s just showing that he could contend for the MVP award," said Hapee coach Jun Noel of the six-foot Castro, who also logged eight rebounds, four steals and one block against six turnovers.

Poor free-throw shooting that saw the Sparks muff 16 of 34 charities compounded Toyota Otis’ woes as it absorbed a second straight defeat after a shock win over TeleTech in its first outing.

Inspired by team owner Cecilio Pedro who made his first appearance in a game this season, the Teeth Sparklers unravelled a decisive attack in the third and kept the Sparks at bay the rest of the way.

Earlier, Magnolia Ice Cream got a huge lift from Yousif Aljamal as it slammed Kettle Korn, 97-74, to barge into the win column after dropping its first two games.

Aljamal, the MVP winner in the recent San Beda-PCU NCAA title duel, scattered 23 points — his largest output in the PBL thus far.

The Corn Poppers suffered a fourth straight defeat while missing the services of coach Pido Jarencio who sat on the San Miguel bench in the PBA over at the Olivares Gym in Parañaque.

Magnolia coach Koy Banal left midway in the third quarter to also attend his coaching job in the pros. But the Spinners worked well under assistant coach Potit de Vera.

Hapee romps to 4th straight win

    By REY LACHICA
    www.mb.com.ph

HAPEE TOOTHPASTE roared to its fourth straight win yesterday by drubbing Toyota Otis, 75-65, to cement its hold of the lead in the 2007 PBL Silver Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Getting the usual numbers from their key players, the Teethmasters scuttled Toyota Otis’ uprising in the third quarter to maintain their unblemished record — their best start so far in three years.

Aside from stretching their winning run, coach Jun Noel believed their victory was enough to send a strong signal to their rivals that they really meant business this time.

"We’re doing well right now but we should be complacent. With our record, we’re now the target of everybody," said Noel. "But we’re ready."

Earlier, Magnolia Cream overwhelmed Kettle Korn-University of Santo Tomas, 97-74, in a battle of collegiate champions to finally barge into the win column.

Playing true to their pre-tournament hype as the team to beat, the Spinners used a big first quarter performance to turn what was expected to be a thrilling contest into a rout and notch their first win after two heartbreaking defeats.

Jason Castro again starred for the Hapee as he scattered 17 points, grabbed eight boards and dished out four assists in another brilliant all-around performance.

Larry Rodriguez, last conference’s top rookie, also did not frustrate owner Cecilio Pedro and team manager Bernard Yang as registered 12 points, seven rebounds and an assist, while Mark Borboran added 9 points, including a towering dunk, and eight rebounds.

After leading as many 12 points in the first half, the Toyota Otis Sparks, with Marvin Cruz at the helm, closed in at 40-46 with just three minutes left in the third. That turned out to be the closest they could get as Castro sparkled a whirlwind finish for a 56-46 breather.

Humming like a well-oiled machine, the Spinners, built around core of NCAA champion San Beda, raced to commanding 27-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and virtually settled the outcome of the game when they took a 74-44 advantage late in the third quarter.

    Spinners pop Kettle Korn

    www.abs-cbnnews.com

Magnolia Ice Cream showed its might as it crashed newcomer Kettle Korn, 97-74, Saturday in the 2006 Philippine Basketball League Silver Cup at the San Juan City Arena.

Yousif Aljamal, Jeff Chan and Bonbon Custodio wasted no time in controlling the tempo for the Spinners as they led the early 27-11 first quarter lead and never relinquished it till the end.

The Tigers, composed of the core of the UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas, couldn’t find their range and were held to only to three points in the first five minutes of the second period, gasping for a big 23-44 deficit.

This was the fourth straight loss for the Tigers who are now beaten by their opponents by an average of 24 points while Magnolia came back to life as it snapped a two-game losing streak for a 1-2 mark.

The 6-foot-4 Aljamal scored 10 points in the second quarter to engineer a big 76-47 advantage for the Spinners and from there they were never threatened for a lopsided win.

"We just did our game plan and the boys were able to make good executions especially our second stringers," said assistant coach Potit de Vera, who took over the coaching chores as head coach Koy Banal left the team in the third quarter to catch up the Purefoods game where he serves as one of the assistants in the PBA.

"We got time to rest Sam Ekwe as we had the control of the game and we decided to give exposure to our other big men," de Vera added.

He admitted that the mainstays of Magnolia are still adjusting to the newcomers from San Beda College and at most the team needs two months to get back their usual spirited play that won them the Unity Cup last year. Frank Calapre
