Lanky pair helps Archers sweep elimination round

WITH THE LANKY pair of Cholo Villanueva and Rico Maierhoffer at the helm, the La Salle Green Archers completed a sweep of the elimination round with a 70-63 triumph over the Jose Rizal Bombers to claim a semifinal berth in the FilOil-Flying V Homegrown Invitational Cup yesterday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The University of the East Warriors also secured a semifinal slot with a 91-68 drubbing of UAAP champion Santo Tomas Tigers.

Val Acuna and James Martinez combined for 25 points to lead the Warriors to a fourth straight win.

The Archers and the Warriors arranged a Group B semifinal showdown next week, but the two semifinal seats in Group A remained up for grabs.

San Beda’s NCAA champion Lions took advantage of the Letran Knights’ late-game miscues to forge a come-from-behind 77-76 victory.

But the Lions still dropped out of semifinal contention with the Warriors’ earlier triumph.

THE LETRAN Knights and the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers will try to complete the semifinal cast of the Filoil-Flying V Homegrown Cup as they take on separate rivals today at the Philsports Arena.

Both teams are sporting 2-2 cards.

The Knights face the undefeated University of the East Red Warriors at 2 p.m. while the Heavy Bombers meet NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions at 4 p.m.

A loss for either the Knights or the Heavy Bombers will give the University of Sto. Tomas Tigers (2-3) a chance to enter the semifinals via quotient system. Both the Knights and the Heavy Bombers dropped their previous outing.

The semifinalists from Group B are the Warriors and the De La Salle Green Archers.

Last Sunday, the Green Archers beat the Heavy Bombers, 70-63, while the Far Eastern U Tamaraws downed the University of the Philippines Maroons, 85-81.

The semis of the tournament supported by Gerry’s Grill, Franz Burger, RJ100, Security Bank, Millennium Plans, USA 88 Fuels and Lubes, Filoil Portagas, Flying V Bio Diesel, Accel Sports, Elf Lubricants and Nike will be on Dec. 13.

FAR EASTERN University and Jose Rizal University came up with contrasting wins to complete the semifinals cast of the Fil-Oil Flying V Homegrown Cup last night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Tamaraws first hacked out a 71-68 win over San Sebastian College before the Heavy Bombers routed an undermanned San Beda College squad, 78-58, to make the semis.

They thus joined early Group A qualifiers De La Salle University and University of the East in the pivotal stage of the league that pits the country’s top collegiate teams.

The semifinals start on Dec. 13 with the Warriors taking on the Archers and the Heavies locking horns with the Tamaraws. The winners will collide in a winner-take-all finals on Dec. 18.

UE bested Letran College, 78-71, in the other game but it hardly made any effect on the semis roster.

Archers shoot down Warriors

LA SALLE STAYED ON TRACK for a smashing comeback even as Jose Rizal University broke free from its whipping boy mold as they defeated their respective foes last night to arrange a finals duel in the Fil-Oil Flying V Homegrown Cup at the Philsports Arena.

The Archers hardly broke a sweat in defeating University of the East, 76-67, to make the finals in this inaugural collegiate league which they hope would announced their grand comeback after getting sidelined by a one-year suspension from the UAAP.

The game also highlighted the bench battle between brothers Franz Pumaren of La Salle and Dindo Pumaren of University of the East.

Turned out the younger Pumaren still has a lot to learn from his multititled sibling.

The Archers leaned on Rico Maierhofer, Ty Tang and Bader Malabes to put the Warriors at bay, taking a 29-10 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back.

Maierhofer scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds plus three assists and three steals.

Earlier, Jayson Nocom sparked a second quarter rally as Jose Rizal University ditched Far Eastern, 80-64, to also make the finals.

The De La Salle Green Archers are kings of the homegrown collegiate
world.

With all cylinders firing, the Green Archers overpowered the Jose Rizal
Heavy Bombers, 79-67, last night to capture the Filoil-Flying V Homegrown
Invitational Cup title at the packed Philsports Arena.

Tyrone Tang led La Salle with 22 points, while Rico Maierhofer added 15
and JV Casio 12 points.

The Bombers got 26 points from John Marion Wilson and 15 from James
Ryan Sena but little else from the rest of the team.

The Green Archers dominated the first half in opening a 47-35 lead.

They shot 14 of 24 from the field, hit but one of 11 free throws, and
had three 3-pointers while holding the Bombers tom 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Jose Rizal’s inability to launch its weapons or drop its bombs due to
La Salle’s perimeter defense was the story of the first 20 minutes.

The Homegrown Cup is supported by Gerry’s Grill, Franz Burger, RJ100,
Security Bank, Millennium Plans, USA 88 Fuels and Lubes, FILOIL Portagas, Flying
V Bio Diesel, Accel Sports, Elf Lubricants and Nike.

In the battle for third, Marnel Baracael unloaded 19 points and Ron
Ryan Cabagnot added 11 as Far Eastern University stunned University of the
East 72-63.

The Tamaraws trailed at the end of the middle two quarters but stampeded their
way to the finish, taming the Warriors with plenty to spare.

Hans Thiele led UE with 15 points, but was unable to do much, along with Jurel
Canizares and James Martinez, to stop FEU’s surge in the last 10 minutes.
