    Bombers storm into Final Eight

    By NELSON BELTRAN

    The Philippine Star

Jose Rizal became the second NCAA squad to make the quarterfinals and West Negros College the next provincial team to be booted out in the opening round of the 2007 Fil-Oil/Flying-V National Collegiate Champions League.

The Heavy Bombers played well even in the absence of three key players, bundling out the WNC Mustangs, 83-61, in a lone game at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium Tuesday.

The Bombers bucked the absence of injured players John Wilson, John Eric Agas and Rene Cunanan as they surged past the Mustangs to earn a quarterfinal spot either against the Ateneo Eagles or the San Sebastian Stags.

The Eagles and the Stags clash at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Loyola Gym, preceding the 2 p.m. showdown between the University of the East Warriors and the NAASCU champion team STI.

Other quarterfinalists are NCAA champion San Beda and UAAP teams Santo Tomas and Far Eastern U. JRU easily joined NCAA Final Four conqueror San Beda in the Final Eight, detonating big bombs against West Negros right in the first half.

Big men James Sena and Jason Nocom led the searing JRU assault as they combined for 40 points and 19 rebounds.

JRU hardly missed the services of Wilson, Agas and Cunanan as Mark Pradas, Mark Cagoco and Marvis Hayes stepped up for the team.

Pradas had 13 points with six rebounds, Mark Cagoco added 10, five rebounds and five assists, and Marvis Hayes collected eight and 14 rebounds.

Vanguardia bared he got valuable tips from Emilio Aguinaldo College coach Nomar Isla how to beat the Bacolod-based WNC team. The EAC Generals played the WNC Mustangs in the recent University Games.

Champs League semifinal race heats up

    Inquirer
Last updated 03:36am (Mla time) 11/21/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Four teams seeking the last two semifinal berths expect a down-the-wire fight in the Fil-Oil/Flying V National Collegiate Champions League Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles and the Jose Rizal University Bombers battle at 4 p.m., right after the 2 p.m. quarterfinal bout between the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the STI College Olympians.

The winner between the Ateneo-JRU tiff will advance to the Final Four versus the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, who ousted back-to-back NCAA champion San Beda College, 88-84, last Monday.

FEU and STI are looking to advance to the Final Four versus the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, who secured the first semifinal slot by routing University of Mindanao, 78-58.

The Olympians earned an outright quarterfinal slot following the withdrawal of University of the East. Jasmine W. Payo

Ateneo, UST clash for final slot

    Monday, November 26, 2007
    Philstar.com

Ateneo de Manila and University of Santo Tomas renew their rivalry when the two clash today in the semi-finals of the Fil-Oil/Flying V Collegiate Champions League at the Arena in San Juan.

NAASCU titleholder STI and perennial Cebu champion University of Visayas collide in the other semis match at 2 p.m. with the winner arranging a title-showdown with the winner of the 4 p.m. Ateneo-UST duel.

All eyes, however, are on the Eagles and the Tigers, who have started to create a rivalry of their own after the two met in a pair of classic matchups the last two years.

UST, which stunned back-to-back NCAA titlist San Beda, 88-64, last week, rallied to beat Ateneo to clinch the 2006 UAAP title. Ateneo evened things up by eliminating UST in last October’s UAAP Final Four.

But for coaches Norman Black of Ateneo and Pido Jarencio of UST, it’s just one of those games.

MANILA, Philippines—Regional and zonal competitions kick off the search for the first national collegiate basketball champion this month.

The nine-month search for the top 16 varsity teams in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) will culminate in the FilOil Flying V “Sweet 16” Final Challenge, a knockout-style tournament that will award the champion a ticket to the 2009 Universiade Games in Serbia.

The Universiade is a biennial, multi-sport event that gathers elite student-athletes all over the world.

“This is a big boost to basketball in our country,” said PCCL chair Rey Gamboa, who recently launched the tourney with BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan and executive director Patrick Gregorio.

“Hundreds of undiscovered players, teams and leagues will be featured under this program,” he added.

The search begins as invitational leagues, including the Fr. Martin Cup and the FilOil Pre-Season tournament, kick off this summer with the champions also earning slots in the zonal competitions.

Among the seeded teams in the top 16 are the champions and runners-up of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Gamboa said over 250 teams from nine regions in the country will compete in over 40 venues.

“With this format, we are encouraging teams and players from the provinces to play their best and win grants,” he said.

The regional, zonal and national championships will offer over P2 million worth of scholarships.

Now known as the Philippine Collegiate Championship, the event will run for nine months, culminating in the FilOil Flying V "Sweet 16" Final Challenge, a knockout-style event featuring the country’s top 16 teams.

The country’s first truly national collegiate league was launched recently by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in a simple signing ceremony at the PLDT headquarters.

SBP president Manuel V. Pangilinan and PCCL chairman Rey Gamboa formalized the partnership that they will hope will usher in a new era for college basketball in the country.

Also present at the signing were SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio, former PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, Jude Turcuato of Solar’s Basketball TV and SBP’s Fritz Gaston.

"This is a big boost to basketball in our country. Hundreds of undiscovered players, teams and leagues will be featured under this program," Gamboa declared. "We want the teams and players to look beyond their mother leagues and see the Philippine Collegiate Championship (PCC) as the one, true national championship," he added.

Aside from over P2 million worth of scholarships and other prizes at stake in the regional, zonal and national championships, the champion will also get a chance to represent the country in the 2009 Universiade Games in Serbia.

The Universiade brings together the top school teams and athletes from around the world in a competition similar to the Olympics.

Gamboa announced that over 250 teams from nine regional areas nationwide will compete in over 40 venues, including the two leading Metro Manila leagues, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

There will be a couple of levels of competition including regional and zonal championships to determine which teams will go on to the national level championships.

Even champions of invitational leagues such as the FilOil Flying V Pre-Season tournament and Fr. Martin Cup could be considered for slots in the zonal competitions.

After the regional and zonal competitions, the top 16 collegiate teams will compete in the national championship.

BTV provide television coverage of selected games of all competing schools.

"We are looking to provide as much exposure and coverage to all the teams, especially the provincial teams," said Turcuatro,.

"With this format, we are encouraging teams and players from the provinces to play their best and win grants to support their respective school’s sports program," said Gamboa.
