    Enjoy na enjoy ako noon sa MBA. Nung nagsimula ang ligang ito, natuwa ako sa konspeto na ang mga koponan ay base sa mga siyudad o probinsya. Kaya naman todo-suporta ang mga fans tuwing may laro sa lugar nila. Nakakatuwang panoorin; sa sobrang tuwa, nawalan na 'ko ng interes sa PBA.

    Dito ko nakita ang kahusayan ni Alex Compton; ang kagalingan ni Joel Banal sa pag-coach (Pasig Pirates); ang padadakdak ni Eddie Laure; sila Hontiveros, Belano, Simon, Mente, Ferriols, atbp.; at higit sa lahat, ang pagiging kampeon sa unang taon ng mga cabalen kong manlalaro ng Pampanga Dragons - magaling pa rin si Ato Agustin noon!. Ewan ko lang ha, pero kaya siguro 'Dragons' ang pinangalan sa Pampanga sa ligang iyon ay dahil ang mga may-ari ay may-ari din ng Mondragon.

    Sa MBA ko rin naunawaan na hindi pa talaga kaya sa lagay ng ekonomiya ng bansa natin ang isang ligang katulad nito. Kaya madaling naging bangkarote. Sa Pilipinas, kailangan pa rin na mga malalaking kumpanya ang mga may-ari ng mga koponan; sila lang ang may kakayahan na sumagot sa gastusin nang matagalan.

    Sir Lion pasok pa din ang Marlins sa Socsargen kasi may nahuhuli naman talagang mga Blue Marlin sa karagatan duon banda lalo sa may Burias Island. Tsaka mas matapang nga naman ang Marlin kaysa sa Tuna.

    Cebu Gems nga naman dahil ang mga kaibigan nating Pamilya Lhuillier ang kanilang mga bossing, na bukod sa mga galante pagdating sa larangan ng palakasan ay mas tanyag sa kanilang mga sanglaan at ibang negosyo-alahero.

    Sa pagakakaalala ko naging Pirates and Pasig-Rizal gawa ng "Pasig" na bahagai ng kanilang pangalan. May kinalaman nga naman sa kalakal pantubig ang Pasig, may mga pirata din diyan nung panahong teenager pa si Kid Cubao.

    Ang San Juan naman ay nataguriang Knights gawa yata ng kanilang dating superstar na si Chris Calaguio na dati ding star ng Letran na alam naman nating Knights ang turing sa ating minamahal na NCAA.

    Sa kaso naman ng Pampanga, kay Chocoks77 tayo magtanong...

    Hey man, who can forget the first champions of the MBA.. The Pampanga dragons.. hehe.. astig 'to pati ung merchandize nila by Nike.. hehe dahil sa Mondragon.. DRAGONS talaga! ;D

    2 ang ibibigay kong explanation:

    Una, Pampanga Dragons ang tawag sa kanila dahil ang Pampanga ay isang emerging dragon in terms of economic capability and stability. Ito yung time na maraming development sa buong Pampanga lalo na sa Clark sa pamamagitan ni dating prangulong Ramos, tulad ng Centennial Park, Fontana at iba pa. Ito din ang mga nakikita ng karamihan ng tao dahil sa taba ng lupa ng Pampanga mula sa epekto ng pagsabog ng Mt. Pinatubo at pagdaloy ng lahar dito.

    Pangalawa, ang Mt. Pinatubo ay nasa boundary ng Zambales, Tarlac at Pampanga, tinawag na Dragons ang Pampanga dahil sa dragon kung/nung umusok ang Pinatubo, pati lamok siguradong tey-pok. :D

    Practice makes perfect but nobody's perfect so why practice!!!

    MBA Nicknames

    * * *HERE is a brief explanation on how the different Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) teams got their nicknames ranging from the obvious to the not so obvious.* Hope this should clear things in a way:

    * * *Batangas was baptized the Blades owing to the native fan knife called the balisong, a longtime symbol of the province;

    * * *Cagayan de Oro was first called the Nuggets in 1998 because of the city is known as the City of Golden Friendship and because of the mining industry in the place.* They became the Amigos the following year, still in line with the city’s official nickname but more so because the original Nuggets team was disbanded and revamped;

    * * *Cebu became the Gems simply because the team owner Jean Henri Lhuillier is also into the pawnshop business;

    * * *Davao chose the Eagles because it is the home of our national bird, the Philippine Eagle;

    * * *Iloilo initially was named the Volts because the owner Robert Lopez Puckett was into solar power-generated electricity.* They became the Megavoltz in 1999 to reflect the team’s revamped and strengthened line-up;

    * * *Laguna logically went for Lakers because of the many lakes that abound in the province;

    * * *Manila opted for Metrostars because of the many “stars” in the capital city.* The stars meant anything from movies, sports, politics and all types of celebrities.* Among the other names considered were Titans and Sharks;

    * * *Negros had a couple reasons to be called the Slashers.* First, Slashers referred to the farmers in the sugarcane field who use their bolos to slash away at harvest time.* Second, Slashers were in reference to fighting cocks were Negros is a major breeder;

    * * *Nueva Ecija was called the Patriots to recognize the brave stand of its people during the Philippine Revolution against Spain;

    * * *Olongapo came aboard as an expansion franchise in 2002 and was called the Volunteers in honor of the spirit of volunteerism that helped the city recover from the loss of the American bases in 1991;

    * * *Pampanga was named the Dragons because the owners the father and son pair of Tony and Anton Gonzalez owned Mondragon Industries.* The team went on leave after the 2000 season and resurfaced as the Stars in 2002 in reference to the gigantic Christmas lanterns, a popular Capampangan icon;

    * * *Pangasinan was called the Presidents in honor of the incumbent president at that time Fidel Valdez Ramos, a native of Pangasinan.* In the middle of the 1999 season probably as a way of reversing its sad fortunes, the team suddenly became the Waves because of the annual Festival of the Sea in the province;

    * * *Pasig was the Blue Pirates because river pirates terrorized the Pasig River and its environs in its early days.* In 1999, the team added Rizal to their name to represent the entire province and not just its capitol and dropped Blue to become the Pasig-Rizal Pirates;

    * * *San Juan was called the Knights because it symbolized gallantry and bravery.* Initially, the team went through several nicknames before settling for the Knights.* Names like Stallions, Cyber Tigers, Bravehearts and even Presidents were considered.

    * * *Socsargen, short for South Cotabato-Sarangani-General Santos, a growth area in Southern Mindanao became the Marlins because of the rich fishing industry over there;

    * * *Surigao was first called the Miners in 1999 because of the rich mining industry in the Caraga Region.* After a poor first season, the team switched to Warriors to show their renewed vigor.

    * * *By the way, the MBA went for commercialization starting in 2000 and the teams attached corporate sponsors to their name reminiscent of the teams in the European Leagues.* The sponsor’s logo was bigger than that of the city represented.* Therefore, the following unions occurred:

    * * *LBC Batangas Blades
    * * *Casino Cagayan de Oro Amigos
    * * *Cebuana Lhuillier Gems
    * * *TPG or Professional Davao Eagles
    * * *FedEx Laguna Lakers
    * * *RCPI Negros Slashers
    * * *Gilbey’s Olongapo Volunteers
    * * *Andok’s San Juan Knights

    I learned in my Econ 157 class (Theories and Cases in Urban and Regional Development) that Manila could be considered as the "primate city" of the Philippines kaya pwede rin sana ang Manila Primates ;D
