    CEU, La Salle Zobel eye fourth straight basketball titles in WNCAA

    CENTRO Escolar University begins its bid for a fourth straight seniors basketball crown, while De La Salle Zobel also starts its campaign for a fourth consecutive midgets title when the 45th season of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association opens on Saturday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

    De La Salle Zobel battles Poveda in the midgets division in the 12 p.m. opener, while CEU faces San Beda Alabang at 3 p.m. in the seniors division.

    La Salle College Antipolo and St. Paul Pasig clash at 1:30 p.m. in the juniors division. LSCA, which celebrates its 30th year as an academic institution and its 10th year as member of the league, is the host of 0his year's WNCAA with the theme "Women in Action @ Forth Fifth Season".

    "Nakakatuwa kasi this is perfect timing for us," said LSCA executive vice chancellor Jimelo Tipay during the press conference at Aristocrat Restaurant on Roxas Boulevard on Wednesday.

    "As host we don't want to disappoint lalo na this is our 30th year as school and 10th year as member, but we expect that all teams will play hard."

    The opening ceremony is set at 11 a.m. at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, with De La Salle University volleyball star Mika Reyes, who played for St. Scholastica's College during her high school years, will be the guest speaker.

    Volleyball action will start on Sunday at St. Scholastica's gym with seven matches, with seniors defending champion San Beda and Assumption College battling at 12:30 p.m.

    Other matches will be played at Rizal Technological University gym in Mandaluyong. Also vying for honors are Angelicum College, Chiang Kai Shek College, Miriam College, Philippine Women's University, St. Jude Catholic School, St. Stephen's High School and University of Asia and the Pacific.

    Badminton, swimming, taekwondo, lawn tennis, table tennis, softball and cheerleading and cheerdance will be held in 2015.

    San Beda, RTU tossers pace WNCAA

    MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion San Beda College Alabang and Rizal Technological University continued to pace senior volleyball while Centro Escolar University gained a share of the lead with RTU in seniors basketball in the 45th WNCAA tournament held in separate venues.

    SBCA walloped St. Scholastica, 25-10, 25-8, 25-21, while RTU subdued CEU, 25-21, 23-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13, at St. Scholastica gym in Manila last Thursday to post their third straight victories.

    Philippine Women’s University tied CEU at 2-1 after a 25-16, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Assumption while University of Asia and the Pacific notched its first win after two losses as it beat Miriam, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20.

    In senior basketball, three-time defending champion CEU hiked its record to 4-0 after victories over PWU, 60-42, last Thursday and Assumption, 91-12, last Sunday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

    RTU downed SBCA, 70-47, and UA&P, 75-25, to likewise improve to 4-0 while dealing its victim its first loss in four matches.

    SBCA turned back St. Scholastica’s College, 58-41, and PWU dumped Miriam, 74-20, for joint third at 2-2.

    Assumption barged into the win column after three defeats as it edged winless Miriam, 51-50.

    In the junior division of the league supported by Mikasa, Molten, OneA Bed and Breakfast, Goody, Monster Radio RX 93.1 and AksyonTV, host La Salle College Antipolo and Miriam show the way in Group A at 2-0 while defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College, De La Salle Zobel and Poveda won their inaugural Group B assignments.

    LSCA trounced St. Scho, 117-12; Miriam stopped Angelicum College, 78-62; CKSC dominated St. Stephen’s High School, 81-22; DLSZ thumped SBCA, 98-19; and Poveda pipped Assumption, 41-40.

    In futsal matches at UA&P gym, CEU blanked SBCA, 2-0, and Miriam downed UA&P, 3-1, for similar 1-win, 1-loss cards in the senior level.

    CEU, 48th WNCAA Champion

    MANILA - Centro Escolar University wasted no time claiming the 48th Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) Seniors Basketball championship by burying Philippine Women's University, 70-37, last Saturday (October 28) at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.     Centro Escolar University extended its dynasty by ruling the 50th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) Seniors Basketball tournament for the ninth straight time.
