Powerhouse M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers marched to the semifinal round of the 21st Kadayawan Invitational Open Basketball Championship Mayor Rodrigo Cup after crushing the Duterte Agilas, 85-74 on Monday at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The semifinal round starts on Wednesday with the Jewelers, who improved to 2-0 (win-loss), facing a still undetermined opponent pending the result of Tuesday’s final elimination games.

Flashy point guard Woodrow Enriquez again led the Jewelers after firing a team-high 17 points, tying his output in M. Lhuillier's 98-76 win over the North Cotabato Braves last Sunday.

The Agilas were reinforced by the talented Samigue Eman, but the 6-foot-9 behemoth failed to dominate the paint against the Jewelers' tight defense.

“We did a good job of defending Eman. We were double-teaming him in defense and that helped our cause,” M. Lhuillier coach Yayoy Alcoseba said.

Despite the pesky defense put up by M. Lhuillier, Eman, who opted to skip this year's PBA Rookie Draft to further hone his skills in the PBL, still managed to finish with a game-high 19 markers.

The Jewelers surged to 25-15 lead and successfully thwarted any rallies launched by the Agilas in the second half to seal the easy win.

Five other Jewelers scored in double figures with new-recruit Reed Friar Juntilla adding 16 markers and three-point artist Stephen Padilla donating 13.

Veteran forward Danny Aying chipped in 11 points while Alano Caputolan and Jett Latonio pitched in 10 apiece.

PBL veteran Wynsjohn Te scored 14 points for the Agilas, who fell to 0-1 (win-loss).

In the other game, PacMan-GenSan (1-1) barged into the win column after escaping Digos-Montana (0-1) in overtime, 82-73.

    BOX SCORES:
    FIRST GAME

    Agilas gain semifinals seat
    By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

THE Duterte Agilas scalped the North Cotabato Braves Tuesday night, 99-93, to barge into the semifinals of the Duterte Cup-Battle of Champions Kadayawan sa Davaw basketball tournament at the Davao City Recreation Center.

In the other game, Digos-Montaña stunned Ozamiz Cotta, 91-87, to likewise grab a semis berth in the tournament sanctioned by the Basketball Association of the Philippines 11 headed by its regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Wynsjohn Te scored 18 points and Saldua and Samigue Eman added 14 and 12, respectively, as the Agilas finished the single round robin eliminations at 1-1.

The Agilas dropped their first game at the hands of the vaunted M. Lhuillier ML Kwarta Padala and were in danger of being eliminated with another defeat.

But the Agilas, responding to the cheers of the home crowd, flexed just enough muscles in turning back the challenge of the Braves.

Duterte Agilas finished second in Bracket A behind Lhuiller.

The Agilas were to play Ozamiz last night for a finals seat.

Lhuillier and Montaña Digos dispute the other finals berth in the second game scheduled at 7 p.m.

Montaña foils title dream of Cebuanos in Davao tilt

    The Freeman 08/18/2006

Jose Randy Panerio became the hero as Digos City Mayor's Squad Montaña Pawnshop extinguished the championship hopes of M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala with a 75-72 conquest of the Cebu Jewelers in the Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Cup "Battle of Champions" the other night at the Davao City Recreation Center.

As of this writing last night, Digos Montaña slugged it out with Ozamiz Cotta for the championship, while the Jewelers fought against Duterte Agilas for third place honors.

Ozamiz shot down the Agilas, 102-95, to clinch the first final ticket in the five-day cagefest presented by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in coordination with the sports development division headed by Christopher "Bong" Go and sanctioned by BAP Region XI director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Panerio hit a booming triple to tie the count at 71-all with 1:16 left in the game. That proved to be Digos Montaña's springboard in shattering M. Lhuillier's invincibility.

In the ensuing play, Desederio Ayson scored on a layup courtesy of a nifty assist by Linde Dawal and later Paul Guerrero split his charities off a foul by Woodrow Enriquez to give Digos Montaña a 74-71 breather with 36 ticks left before the final buzzer.

    Jewelers falter

    Cebu Daily News
Last updated 10:51am (Mla time) 08/18/2006

A COMPLACENT M. Lhuillier squad lost its chance for a championship berth as the Jewelers absorbed a costly 75-72 loss to Digos-Montaña Pawnbrokers last Wednesday in the semifinals of the 21st Kadayawan Open Invitational Basketball Championship at the Davao City Recreation Center.

With the loss, the Jewelers will settle for a third place battle against the Duterte Agilas, who lost to Ozamiz Cotta, 102-95, in the other semifinal match.

The battle-for-third and championship games were still being played as of press time yesterday.

After a tied first quarter, the Jewelers, behind Reed Friar Juntilla and Woodrow Enriquez pulled away in the second quarter and took a 47-34 halftime edge.

    M. Lhuillier, which entered the semifinals with a 2-0 (win-loss) card, was still up by nine points, 61-52, at the end of the third period until disaster struck in the payoff canto.

“The boys lost their focus in the fourth and settled for individual plays thinking that the game was already in the bag,” M. Lhuillier head coach Yayoy Alcoseba told Cebu Daily News.

After a hot shooting in the second and third periods, the Jewelers suddenly went ice-cold in the fourth where they only managed 11 points compared to the Pawnbrokers’ 23.

“While our shooting went sour, Montaña did not miss from the field and the breaks of the game went their way,” Alcoseba added.

With the Jewelers leading, 71-68, veteran shooter Randy Panerio uncorked a booming triple to knot the count at 71-all with 1:16 left.

After a botched play by the Jewelers, Desiderio Ayson then converted a fieldgoal in the next play to give the Pawnbrokers a 73-71 lead with 37 ticks left in the clock.

    M. Lhuillier again faltered in their next play and Linde Dawal and Paul Guerrero made crucial free throws to seal the win for Montaña.

Panerio and Alfredo Gonzaga led Montaña with 14 points apiece while Ayson added 10.

Juntilla and Enriquez paced M. Lhuillier with 16 and 11 markers, respectively.

    Box scores:

    MONTANA (75)- Panerio 14, Gonzaga 14, Ayson 10, Abanes 10, Jatico 8, Guerrero 8, Atablanco 8, Dawal 3.
    M. LHULLIER (72)- Juntilla 16, Enriquez 11, Maniego 9, Larong 8, Saludsud 6, Padilla 6, Aying 5, Piodo 4, Latonio 3, Dy 2, Caputolan 2.

Duterte cagefest underway; Cebu dribblers beat rivals
    By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

THE Duterte Agilas-Phoenix Fuels ran out of gas to succumb to a 68-72 loss to ML Kuwarta Padala of Cebu.

Arthro Kontra Arthritis meanwhile hacked out a pulsating 69-67 victory to survive a 69-67 win over Montaña Pawnshop in the opener of the 2007 Mayor Rodrigo Duterte-Kadayawan Basketball Tournament Thursday night at the Almendras Gym.

Former Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusader Eliazer "Buboy" Berami made a jumper in the dying seconds, which could have forced the trailing Agilas to tie the score with MLKP as the but came up short.

Jet Latonio was quick to bring down the ball for MLKP forcing Agilas' Eder Saldua to foul him. Latonio then wrapped up the match with two gift shots in the cagefest presented by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.

The Agilas' costly errors in the dying seconds hurt them. They were set to recover from their heartbreaking loss when they clash against Arthro in a must win game Friday night.

Arthro, coached by retired PBA player Al Solis, engaged Monta¤a in a tough battle early on, before Montaña went on a a searing rally at the start of the second quarter leaving Arthro behind, 36-23, with 3:34 minutes left.

Ronald Bucao's early three-pointer, however, kept Arthro alive in the second half as he, Leode Garcia, Mark Ababon, Luther Justiniani and Roy Mercades stepped up to snatch a two-point margin, 50-48, at the end of the third canto.

A costly turnover hurt Arthro in the final two minutes allowing Montaña to grab a 67-65 lead, but the sweet-shooting Bucao again sank a perimeter basket to pull Arthro, 68-67, 44.54 seconds remaining.

Arthro's Marvin Merado missed his two gift shots but he grabbed the rebound to keep the ball to their side. A Montaña player gave up a foul in the last 9:24 seconds of the game giving Ababon the chance to sank another charity basket to secure the win.

Ababon led Arthro with 33 points.

Acting Mayor Sara Zimmerman Duterte formally opened the tournament. Also on hand during the opening ceremonies were Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez and Commissioner Leon Montemayor, City Sports Coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go and BAP-SBP Regional Director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Friday's 5 p.m. game pits Montaña against MLKP.

Agilas, MLKP dispute Duterte cage loop title

MONTANA Pawnbrokers dropped a 12-0 bomb and Paul Guerrero drained a three-pointer from the top of the key for the lead that entirely changed the complexion of the game for the Duterte Agilas-Phoenix Fuels en route to victory on the way to an 81-78 win over the Duterte Agilas-Phoenix Fuels in the 2007 Mayor RRD-Kadayawan Basketball Tournament Saturday night at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The win by the Pawnbrokers, however, did not matter as the Agilas-Phoenix Fuels barged in to the final via a better tie-break score.

The Duterte Agilas-Phoenix Fuels led 73-62 with Roderick Ramos hitting a three-point shot, five minutes and six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

But after that, the Pawnbrokers of new head coach Nick Serafica sparked a 12-0 run and the Agilas-Phoenix Fuels went cold from the outside.

The Yayoy Alcoseba-mentored M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, on the other hand, fought fiercely with Arthro Kontra Arthritis of coach Al Solis before winning, 80-69, and also making it to the finals.

Athro's shooters failed to deliver the three-point area and MLKP continued to run with point guard Woody Enriquez engineering the attack in the entire fourth quarter.

The tournament is part of the 22nd Kadayawan Sports Festival presented by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with the support of the Sports Development Division and the BAP-XI under Regional Director Regino "Boy" Cua.

    The scores:

    Montana Pawnshop 81 - Lamocha 15, Fernandez 15, Ilanga 13, Ayson 12, Guerrero 7, Clavel 6, Quibod 3, Abanes 2.

    Jewelers rule Duterte Cup

WOODROW Enriquez saved the day for the multi-titled M. Duterte-Kadayawan Basketball Tournament last Sunday night at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The Cebuanos trailed after Arturo Atablanco split his charities, 72-74, in the final 33 seconds as the Jewelers grabbed the offensive board that allowed Stephen Padilla to make his own three-point attempt.

Enriquez also had his share of a missed triple but on his second try, the leather sank in and that doused cold water on the Agilas-Phoenix Fuels’ hope to keep the title home.

The Agilas-Phoenix were controlling the game early but lost its hold of the game when the Jewelers went full throttle in the second.

In the battle for third place, Montaña Pawnshop Davao beat Arthro Kontra Arthritis, 74-71.
