Olympians survive Hawks in 6th NAASCU opener

Rookie Jun Perez capped his game long brilliance with a basket as time expired to lift last year’s runner up STI College Olympians against the defending champion University of Manila Hawks 60-58 in the opening of the 6th NAASCU at the Cuneta Astrodome last Saturday.* The Olympians were ahead by three 57-54 when UM forward Pol Santiago nailed a three pointer with 9 seconds left to tie the game. That actually set up Perez’ heroic shot that avenged the Olympians over their tormentors from last year.

The Olympians started to dictate the pace of the game with its signature defense early on as they shot down the Hawks’ high octane offense. The triumvirate of Ramon Mabayo, Dexter Micutuan and Jojo Belano ran rings around their counterparts to take an early 12-5 lead. The quarter ended with the Olympians ahead 14-10.* The second quarter saw both teams shuffle their men and the first half became a “first blink you die” affair as both teams pressured each other to no avail. The half ended with the Olympians still ahead 29-26.

In the third canto, the 5 time champions got back as they summoned their strength courtesy of the inside plays of Onofre Napiza and Christian Gobis as the Hawks caught up with the Olympians to take a 38-36* lead with 2 minutes left. Olympian Francis Junatas beat the buzzer to end the third quarter with both teams tied with 41points apiece.*

The fourth quarter was a nip and tuck affair as opening day jitters took its toll as both teams shot horrendously at the free throw line.* The game was full of exceptional defensive stops and extraordinary teamwork that led to each team’s basket.* Perez’ impeccable orchestration of plays led to baskets by Michael Cabangon & Dexter Micutuan to keep the Olympian’s a notch ahead until he scored in the dying seconds.

It was the second loss of the Hawks in the six years that they have been in the league and the first time they were held below sixty points. It’s a good start for the Olympians who are one of the favorites to win it all this year. Next stop is corporate rival AMA Computer University on July 29, 2006 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

AMACU wins over STI College 82-78
In what is touted as the newest rivalry in Philippine Amateur Basketball, AMA Computer University came up on top as it brought down last year’s runner up STI College, posting an 82-78 win to grab solo leadership with three wins and no losses in the 6th NAASCU basketball tournament. The Titans relied on the game long brilliance of new recruits Chito Jaime and Patrick Mercado to quell every uprising by the Olympians. Jaime, a 6-4 high leaping forward topscored for the Titans with 24 points which is now coached by Boni Garcia. Mercado, another 6-4 do it all forward ably backed up Jaime with 18 points.

The Olympians surrendered 18 free throws on various fouls in the fourth quarter as the Titans took advantage by converting 15 of those to secure the win. The Titans led by as much as 9 points in the second quarter but the Olympians came to life in the third quarter as they summoned their strength through hussle plays to take the upperhand 53-51, the quarter ended with both teams back to square one with a 59 - all tie.. The fourth quarter was a see saw battle with neither team refusing to buckle. The Olympians erased a 79-70 lead with 30 seconds left to move to within two 80-78 with a field goal and three pointers by Haddy Porto and Dexter Micutuanl. AMACU on the other hand proved steadier at crunch time as they converted on two more free throws to seal the win.

Sapakan pagkatapos ng laro habang shakehands.

Walang warmup sabay slamdunk contest kagad.

STI COLLEGE wins over NEU 80 - 60

STI College vented its ire on the unbeaten New Era University Hunters 80 – 60 to notch its second win in the 6th NAASCU Basketball tournament. The Olympians limited the Hunters to 23 points in the first half as they erupted with 45 markers and just cruised on the rest of the way. STI’s veteran playmaker and team captain Jojo Belano shut down New Era’s scoring machine Jeff de Guzman as his defense limited the gunner to only 10 points. The points scored was a far cry from the 36 and 30 points that de Guzman tallied in their two previous wins. “Stop de Guzman and you stop the Hunters!” That was the team motto as the hapless point guard was not able to get good looks the whole time. Michael Cabangon and Ramon Mabayo was all business as their defense and all around hussle were translated into offense as the two led the Olympians with 13 and 12 points respectively.

The third quarter was nonetheless different from the first as both teams traded baskets and spurts as the slippery floor at the UM gym prevented any team in making a good run. The 20 point win shows the number of points that de Guzman failed to score as he was covered well and the in your face defense of STI translated to fastbreak points.

The Olympians are now 2-1 and will try to test the unbeaten San Sebastian Baycats on August 7, 2006.

    Box scores:
    STI ( 80)
    Cabangon 13, Mabayo 12, Porto 9, Junatas 8, Belano 7, Micutuan 6, Macalma 6, Perez 6, Rufin 3, Legaspi 2, Lunar 2, Rosales 2, Limpin 2, San Luis 1, Dia 1, Libunao 0.
    NEW ERA ( 60 )
    Perlas 12, Tengco 11, De Guzman 10, Mabigat 6, Naguit 4, Maynes 4, Bongat 4, Alastre 3, Ibay 3, Assalud 2, Lapid 0, Acuna 0.

    Quarters: 21-11, 45-23, 62-41, 80-60

Sapakan pagkatapos ng laro habang shakehands. - Yes it happened after the SSC-UM game,
fyi i have yet to confirm but the UM player who punched the SSC player is now banned from the NAASCU.

Walang warmup sabay slamdunk contest kagad.- Its not true, five player did warm ups and the two were just late.Nahihiya

Kasahan at salpukan na parang nagsasabong na walang thrown out.- Well, we are trying to address this. Siyempre referees should have controlled the game. I saw some cheap shots that werent called and i hope this does not happen in the future.

Mga bading na bright orange ang buhok na rumarampa habang timeout. - Lahat naman ng liga may ganito, nagkataon lang our rival AMA came prepared. (80% of the people who watched were from AMA)

May nakawan pa sa locker ng bolto-boltong gamit. - Yes it happened i hope we catch the thief who did this. Kawawa naman ang mga nanakawan at mga students sila.

Anak ng teteng! Ayoko na sa UAAP at NCAA, puro kabadingan!

NAASCU na tayo!- The NAASCU is a young league and is only in its sixth season, i believe the things written above also happened in the UAAP and NCAA before. Mas malala pa sa NCAA at nag scrap sila ng season because of rumbles. But we who are running the league are very determined to run a good league. Give the NAASCU another decade and i believe we will give the UAAP and NCAA teams a run for their money.

Hope this enlightens the questions posted.

Re: THE 6TH NAASCU BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Wang-bu/Mhel, I believe that we have a forum that discusses the NAASCU in general. It would be better if we discuss the league game/player exploits there. This thread is for STI's involvement in the on-going NAASCU tournament.
