Ano pa ba ang masasabi natin kundi..."Angat talaga ang San Beda."
We had a head start in this game. At one time we had a glorious 3rd place finish in the World Championship and was the undisputed power in Asia. But the world has learned how to play it. They may not be as good as us,but they have enough smarts to make use of their height. That is enough to beat us.

if ateneo will be able to move on from their opening game loss to beda, then the eaglets will be in the best position to challenge the red cubs for the homegrown title. san sebastian blasted the myth of beda invincibility last year, so there's no telling whether ateneo or any other team, for that matter, will be able to do the same again.

For one who had actually seen more Junior than Senior games in the NCAA, last season's Red Cubs were far from mythical or invincible.

They came into season 81 losing key players to graduation. They were without Martinez (who enrolled at UE), Menor, Taganas, and Tecson (key players in the San Beda Srs.) and Castillo who are in Team Behold of San Beda.

In fact, in the pre-season events leading to the NCAA tournament, they won no trophies. Senor Badolato was just hoping for the best come NCAA.

Letran and San Sebastian were the favorites. Both were bannered by at least 10 high school senior students. Both with blue chip players. Green and Tagarda for the Squires. Salamat, Reyes and Lee for the Staglets. While San Beda only had one legit college level kid in its line-up in Hermida.

Even without the protest on a Letran player, San Beda surpassed expectations when it defeated San Sebastion in a playoff match that practically assured them of a championship spot. Indeed, pride can at times make one team overcome challenges.

But when the title series started, San Sebastian's rotation of 10 senior players were just to deep for Senor Badolato to overcome. His problems were compounded with an injured Victorino. San Sebastian would win the title in 2 games on 4th quarter scoring binges from Salamat.

But in a post game interview, Coach Ato was infact very proud of that Season 81 team as it achieved more than what was realistically expected of them.

But this team's saga would not end there. They would have their chance to get back at San Sebastion in the National Championships. With 4 underclassmen playing in overtime, they beat the same San Sebastian Staglets and crowned themselves National Champions.

This coming Season 82, the Red Cubs should be favorites anew. And this is what makes Senor Badolato such a amazing high school coach. The Red Cubs is always a championship caliber team regardless of player turnover due to graduation. Same can never be said of most teams. Both in the NCAA and the UAAP.

Ateneo defeated La Salle Greenhills this afternoon to earn the right to fight the San Beda Red Cubs for the championship. Unheralded point guard Rivera saved the day for the Blue Eaglets. Rivera waxed hot from the 3 point country in the second half to help his team wrest the lead from La Salle.
